View Full Version : Gay Supporter

I know this is not a popular opinion on this board but I am a William Gay supporter. I think he is good at what he is - a nickle CB with experience and one who plays well in our system.

Yes I know he gives up some plays but I think the criticism that is placed on him is way way overdone. If anything, I think other teams target McFadden more than Gay.

In any case, I trust our front office, Tomlin and LeBeau and they should know which talent will fit our defense the best.

I will go on record to state that Gay will help us more than hurt us and will post a weekly "Gay Meter" to track his performance this year. I think you will be surprised at how many sacks and ints he will contribute this year.

When he gives up big plays to make us lose a game, I will gladly be the lightning rod and absorb all your hatred for him.

Ditto. I'm proud of our Gay players, and will likewise be posting his weekly highlights and lowlights and doing a comparison/contrast with our non-Gay DBs.

As I said in another thread, I've given up hope on Gay completely. Of course he'll make some positive plays, but it's the number of negative plays that I, along with many other fans, are getting tired of. Butler and Warren may have been worse, who knows, but I would have loved to find out, vice watching Gay getting burned time after time. But as my wife has well knows, I've been known to be wrong a plenty. Here's to me hopefully being wrong yet again for the good of the Steelers!!!

Surprised at Chris Scott being on the team. I don't remember him making one block, but missing a ton. He was REALLY bad. Coaches must see a ton of potential in this kid, but I can't believe he wouldn't make it to the practice squad.

he was a workout warrior but of course if that doesnt translate over to the game, pretty worthless.

im surprised they kept battle and cut butler. battle sucks and i don't know what he's doing on special teams that is so good. emmanuel sanders and antonio brown BOTH had more tackles on special teams than battle, despite being active for less games. I don't get it.

I really don't have an opinion either way on this. I'm glad you are gonna do the 'meter' thing to check his performance though. I mentioned before that I've seen Gay play well at times, but then again, I've seen him look like he doesn't belong on the field with professionals. The FO must know and see something in Gay's ability that the majority of the rest of us don't.

I'm completely in agreement with all of the Battle-bashers. No idea why he makes the team, unless six WRs was the target. Grisham was no better, certainly not during the preseason.

gay is going to be the best #5 cb by the end of this season. im predicting curtis brown will overtake him as the starting nickel by mid season, by what i've seen he's already our best pure cover corner. i'd even say he's better than ike at shadowing wr's. i expect him to be a starter next year as soon as he learns the defense

These stats were written by Doden Gray on another post but I wanted to share them here to express further Gay support.

"Taylor was thrown at 11.8% of the time, Gay 12.52%, so not as much of a discrepancy as one would think. Of course, Gay's completion percentage against was about 10 points higher, but even Taylor had a CPA of about 58%."

From the horse's mouth... Tomlin at news conference yesterday -

"He shows good awareness," Tomlin said of Gay. "He is combative in the run, he shows blitz capabilities, but, more than anything, the ability to play in the slot usually is exemplified by what a guy is able to take in and understand from an above-the-neck standpoint. To be quite frank, it is probably more like safety with the position than it is like corner, and he has shown an aptitude for it."

No kidding. And Brees threw for over 400 yards? Does that mean the GB secondary sucks too? It's not so much the individual talent on this team, but maybe more about how well the scheme works. Brady and Rogers seem to understand the Steelers defensive scheme and have success so hopefully coach Lebeau can draw up a few tricks to confuse the "elite" QBs this year.

Yes and no. Fitzpatrick and Gradkowski are not elite, and yet we made them look like Pro Bowlers. Our defensive secondary tends to play down to the opposition, but when down is not down at all, like with Brady and Manning, then we've got real problems. No doubt about it, we need upgrades everywhere except Troy. But no, Gay's not the problem.

I can see how one can support Gay for his blitzing ability but quite honestly, he's proven time and time again that he cannot handle the cornerback position adequately at the NFL level. I wouldn't mind him as a dime back but as anything more he's really pretty worthless. I know some people may overreact to some of his bad plays but at the same time he never does anything (coverage-wise) to support himself, and he's repeatedly been given chances over and over again for 4 years now to prove otherwise. Somebody else (Brown) needs to take his nickel duties ASAP.

He's an average nickel. Not sure if we can be awesome everywhere. He may ger supplanted eventually this year - that would be an upgrade - but it does not mean he is bad. He is simply average and actually better than most nickels in run support. So, despite an expert ranking of 81 out of 100. I'd give him a little higher ranking over a few others IMO.

William Gay was the starting LCB for the Seattle game. Obviously we should not read too much into how are D performed against what is basically a Pop Warner team. Still, based on the gamebook (http://www.nfl.com/liveupdate/gamecenter/55187/PIT_Gamebook.pdf) from NFL.com, it would appear that Gay was thrown at six times and allowed three receptions for 17 yards. Not bad. Ike appears to have been thrown at twice, with one reception for 9 yards.

I don't have a crystal ball, but if McFadden had been the starter, I think Tarvaris Jackson would have done significantly better.

battle is not a gunner. his job is rarely caught on television because the camera follows the ball and returner. battle is upfield clogging up lanes and redirecting the returner to the gunners.
