View Full Version : A very tough question......

If we could only keep one out of the two players, Troy Polamula or Big Ben, which one would you keep and why? I know we all want both, but this may also answer whether or not you are defensive or offensive minded. Always remember that old saying "Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships"

I love defense, but it is so hard to get a great QB! We have been blessed with many talented safeties, and only two awesome QB`s in the burgh. I have to stay with Ben, but it would kill me to let Troy go.

Um let me think...
BEN!!!
Qb's like him only come around once every dynasty.

But I love Troy, its just that you can pick up a saftey in the open marked any day, thats not so true with Stud Quarterbacks.

Ben, absolutely, but.... how many grueling years did I endure just knowing in my heart on every 3rd & long for the other team that they were going to convert? Dick Laboe helped immeasurably with that, but Troy is the key to it all. We have to keep our secondary strong, and keeping him is crucial.

Dude thats like asking which hand would you rather cut off the right or the left. But I'll answer it. Big Ben has to be the choice so I'm with you. My whole Steelers life I wanted a legit franchise QB. I was praying and hoping that Ben fell in the 2004 draft. He did and I hope retires a Pittsburgh Steeler. Plus his 27- 4 record speaks for itself. Ben hasn't even hit his prime yet. He is still improving and only entering his third year. This season the NFL better watch out. Ben is going to tear the NFL up.

About Troy though I know he is a great safety and is very important to our defense since he can do so many things. But I think finding a great safety is easier then finding a great QB. But the Steelers will have to anwer this question soon since Troy's contract is up after the 2007 season and Ben's is up after the 2009 season. I just hope they can find a way to keep both. Its going to take alot of money but both should retire a Steeler. The Rooney's can afford but will they shell out the cash is the question.

Ben but they'll be able to keep both. Troy's contract is up after 07 and I think Ben's is up in 09. There will be cap space with players coming toward the end of the career like Porter, Aaron Smith, Farrior, Hartings and others.

QB is the most important position on the team - you have the second best QB in the game - no contest.

A quality safety is a nice luxury - a quality QB is a necessity.

I dont know that its a question of offence or defence but more of a question of who is more replacable. We can replace Troy easily (the hair thing might be able to replace) but ben is the Quarterback fans prayed about when the steelers were struggling and now we have him and I for one dont want him to go ANYWHERE!

Well I think we will always find defensive guys for our defense. We have a pretty good track record with defense I would say. From the Steel Curtain to Blitzburgh. We don't have such a good track record with QB's. When Neil O'Donnell by the stats is the second most successful QB in your teams history that isn't saying much. So to answer the priority question I would have to say offense.

Ben Roethlisberger. I'll take a young franchise QB over any other position on the playing field.

I have learned over the years that we can always get another player that is as fast and as good as the previous player, if not faster and better. That is not true when you are talking about a qb like Ben. I think I feel that way because it has been so many, many years that we have not had a qb worth having.......... since Terry Bradshaw. Ben is quick thinking, he is fast, thinks well on his feet and is an elite player. His large stature, cannon arm, laser-like accuracy, and smart play are second to none. Yeah we can get another Troy, not another Ben. He is a field general, the best there is!~ Not 2nd best.
My loyalities are with the name on the front of the jersey, in any team I support. Stars come and go............heros are forever....Ben is a hero

Agreed. Well except for the "second best QB" part. LOL

But we Steeler fans have suffered quite a long time without a top notch QB.

this ain't though for me, i'd take big ben, defense may win championships but if you don't have an offense that can get points the defense won't mean a damn thing, cause defense can only do so much

defense is more important than offense, but QB is the most important single position.
Ben for sure.
importance on a team is like
QB
DL
OL
DL
OL
DL
etc etc

DB
WR

Im a defensive guy, I always have been. I love seeing the big hits, the interceptions, the sacks, everything.

My gut tells me to say Ben because we've not had a solid QB for so long..but my heart says Troy because he's just such a monster back there for us.

I love D too. But franchise QBs don't come around that often. Bradshaw 70-83 and now Big Ben 04-05. We had some pretty good Ds in between but no real Qbs...

Please don't make me choose, cleve. Both Ben and Troy are part of a team, and both players are still a huge part of our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers at this point, so I will not choose. Ben is the natural leader of our team and a kickass QB whom I don't want to lose at any cost, but yet with Troy on the field it's like having 5 more players in the game...(lol).

Come on SteelerzGirl choose one. I know what you mean though. Its like choosing which hand to cut off your right or your left. Both Ben and Troy are still very young and have alot of great football left in their respective careers. But I have to go with Ben. Its really hard to find that young franchise QB.

I heard and maybe it was here that Troy is leaving when his contract is up because his wife is from CA and has family back there. That could also VERY EASILY have been a rumor. I find it kinda hard that Troy would have said this. But also stranger things have happened.

Something like half of all SB MVP's have been QB's. Just off the top of my head I'd say 2-3 DB's (only 1 Safety). I'll take Ben. Fortunately there are a lot of big contracts that will be up by the end of the 2008 season so keeping both shouldn't be a problem.

Not so tough actually. I don't agree with the reasoning that a great safety is just 'nice'. Just a handful of years ago most of us were swinging from the curtain rod because of our secondary. It was the kind of hemmoraging that could only be stopped by draining all the blood.

But in Ben you have what may be - may be - the football equivalent of a holy grail.

Ben Roethlisberger!
Each year he continues to grow in the offence!
I still cannot get over the 3rd and 18(?) pass to Hines Ward to the Seattle 3...
Wanting to run, spotting the line of scrimmage... waiting for the moment to heave the ball downfield... Can you teach stuff like that?

Nope! Well, perhaps to a degree. But I would have to say that the majority would have to be natural talent and maturation.

A more realistic question would be a choice between Troy or Ike Taylor. This issue may come front and center sooner rather than later.

Troy stays.

Well Troy vs Ike is a tough question as well. But I would go with Troy. Troy has already proven to be one of the best safties in the NFL and real difference maker. I know shut down corners are hard to come by. But is there really any shut down corners anymore? Even Champ gets beat. Plus the rules prevent shut down corners since the rules favor the offensive players so much. But Ike did show alot of promise last year and took a major step. I don't want to lose Ike at all.

Hopefully they can sign Ike this year, Troy, Parker and Starks next year and Ben the following year. That will mean dumping some older players but you can't let this kind of young talent walk away.
