STEELERS 24, SEAHAWKS 0

Steelers’ record: 1-1
One year ago: 2-0
Series record (including playoffs): Steelers lead, 9-8

STORYLINE
In the immediate aftermath of their 2011 regular season opener, Troy Polamaluhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/troy-polamalu/1b1010ec-73b6-414d-88ee-72dbd9b48597/) used the word, “humbling.” A few days later, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said, “We came out thinking we were AFC Champions …” Losing to the Ravens always is bad, but losing to the Ravens because of over-confidence and being ill-prepared to match their intensity is unacceptable and potentially alarming. How would the Steelers respond?

TURNING POINT
This seemed to be one of those games where the visiting team would need some help early in the form of mistakes to grow some confidence if it was to pull off the upset. The Steelers’ failure on that early goal-to-go situation could have been the start of allowing that to happen, but the defense forced a three-and-out and the offense responded with a 9-play, 60-yard drive ending with a 1-yard touchdown run by Rashard Mendenhallhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/rashard-mendenhall/3e1ac879-3146-46f4-946b-216532a371b1/). That prevented the Seahawks from building any kind of momentum early and allowed the Steelers to be in control throughout.

STAT THAT STANDS OUT
In two full games, games in which he has played every defensive snap, Ike Taylorhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ike-taylor/a3a15eb8-af01-4ce7-8607-07a5e88db59f/) has allowed one completion – that coming late in the third quarter against the Seahawks – a 9-yard pass to WR Mike Williams on a second-and-10.

WHAT WENT RIGHT
* After the offense failed to punch it in on that first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, the Steelers defense allowed only two yards on three plays to force Seattle to punt from its own end zone.

* It’s not usually a good idea to field a punt at your own 5-yard line, but that’s what Antonio Brownhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/antonio-brown/859114e9-d70b-477b-8eaf-6f34bb1ffc03/) did late in the first quarter. Brown made CB Richard Sherman miss, and then he set up a good block on safety Kam Chancellor to get around the corner. It ended up as a 41-yard return, and the Steelers offense had good field position to begin its third possession.

* On a first-and-10 at the 23-yard line, Ben Roethlisbergerhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/ben-roethlisberger/54dda34e-9e43-4c57-9397-1143ddced5d6/) executed a play-action fake to Isaac Redmanhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/isaac-redman/5250dc8c-d3c1-4001-9e55-b6c6d991bb84/), and as he did it there seemed to be a big lane there over the right side. That play ended with Roethlisberger scrambling for 3 yards, and on second down Redman got the ball and burst through a hole on the right side on what turned into a 20-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 lead.

* On a third-and-5 to open the second half, Aaron Smithhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/aaron-smith/488f7c49-70fe-411f-8000-072b635beaa7/) got pressure on Seahawks quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, whose throw to WR Doug Baldwin was broken up by a hit from William Gayhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/william-gay/1a5771c1-6fa2-4076-94a2-44fef5695d61/).

* On the Steelers' second offensive possession of the second half, Ben Roethlisberger completed 7-of-7 for 77 yards and the 2-yard touchdown to Mike Wallacehttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/mike-wallace/304eecdf-1b60-4dc4-9cd8-7808d9f5c97a/) to give the Steelers a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter.

* It was a fine defensive series for the Steelers after the touchdown pass to Wallace made it 24-0 late in the third quarter. On first down, Troy Polamalu was all over an attempted pass to TE Anthony McCoy. He timed his break on the ball perfectly and just missed what would have been a pick-six. Then on third-and-1, William Gay knocked a pass away from WR Mike Williams to force a punt.

* Nice bounce-back. Curtis Brownhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/curtis-brown/f3c23f12-83ab-423a-a7b8-e15b757e96b2/) committed a rookie mistake when he allowed himself to be drawn into shoving match during a Seattle punt that ended with him being penalized and the Steelers offense forced to start the possession in a hole. On the next punt, Brown was serving as a gunner and he got down under Daniel Sepulvedahttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/daniel-sepulveda/296350b1-2a18-4909-88d5-e8d3db0de0a1/)’s punt to team with Stevenson Sylvesterhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/stevenson-sylvester/4de7311d-1644-4c73-8521-9298d2c8b9df/) to drop Leon Washington for no gain on the return.

WHAT WENT WRONG
* It was a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line after CB Brandon Browner was flagged for interfering with Mike Wallace, and the Steelers seemed poised to end their opening possession with a touchdown. On first down, Rashard Mendenhall was stopped for no gain; on second-and-goal, safety Atari Bigby sacked Ben Roethlisberger for a 7-yard loss; on third down, Roethlisberger scrambled to within inches of the goal line. On fourth down, Mendenhall attempted to go over the left side but was stopped for no gain by safety Earl Thomas.

* It was a costly 16-yard gain. On a completed pass to Heath Millerhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/heath-miller/ada7ab1b-9acd-421a-bed0-79ccc4542630/), Ben Roethlisberger took a hit to the knee from DE Raheem Brock. The play drew a roughing the passer penalty to give the Steelers a first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. Roethlisberger was able to leave the field under his own power, and Charlie Batchhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/charlie-batch/a4741ee1-4d87-4810-aa6d-7ede57104771/) came into the game. After handing the ball off twice, Batch was replaced by Roethlisberger, who threw behind a slanting Hines Wardhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/hines-ward/8a520076-6343-42ce-a89f-28a7dc97c67a/) on third-and-goal. The Steelers settled for a 20-yard field goal and a 17-0 lead late in the first half.

* Shaun Suishamhttp://www.steelers.com/assets/nflimg/icon-article-link.gif (http://www.steelers.com/team/roster/shaun-suisham/1375892d-6f3e-462a-b784-4c6cd6bce2b2/) was having himself a fine afternoon there for a while. He was 1-for-1 in field goals, and his kickoffs were deep enough and high enough to prevent Seattle’s Leon Washington from doing what he does best. In fact, three of Suisham’s five kickoffs were touchbacks. But then he missed a 41-yard field goal into the open end of Heinz Field; it was wide right.

A much better weekend than last :).. Shutout was just what the doctor ordered and for hte Titans to humble the Ravens was a nice treat too, I thought hte Ravens would win that one handily. I'll echo what I've said already but I really think they were obsessed with the idea of beating us so bad that they lost focus that they play us twice and other teams the other fourteen games.

What a difference a week makes.

Still some things that need to be hashed out, it wasn't perfect, the Seahawks are just real bad. But leaps and bounds better than least week.

Ben looks a little off to me. He missed a few throws today that seemed out of sorts fro him. A couple were miscommunication due to young WRs I'm sure, but some others weren't. One in particular was a crossing route in the 3rd where Hines was wide open for a big gain and the throw wasn't even close. Puzzling. :noidea:

Great day for the defense, they only crossed midfield once. I know it wasn't perfect either, but no need to knit pick. A shutout is a shutout.

:tt02:Great game.:tt02:

it wasn't against a great team, but I'll take it. I saw a lot of good things going on, and some bad things as well.

Some of those miscues on passing plays might be because it's still early in the season, hopefully they'll tighten up as the year goes on.

im still not convinced we are worth anything. I feel like we were still playing very sluggish. I'm just glad to see Ben not down with a broken leg or torn ligament. You can still see that Ben's throwing game is way off though :S

Meh. Not that impressed. D line still leaves much to be desired. Very little pressure when it mattered.

Also, 24 points is a paltry amount. The offense will have to carry the load this season. They need to sharpen up in the redzone.

All in all a small step in the right direction. But I am still concerned about the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball - especially defensively. The Steelers will need to retool this offseason.

The Ravens loss is the biggest thing to happen today. They completely squandered their victory over the Steelers. It's good to see that they haven't matured just yet.

While Collins is garbage against 95% of the league, he does a decent job against the Steelers

If we don't don't jump on them early and get the crowd out of it.....it could be another stressful game

it seemed to me that the secondary looked pretty good overall. Most of the yards they gave up were while playing more of a prevent defense.

Gay was obviously getting picked on though.

DanRooney

It was an okay win for us, but it was Seattle after all. It was nice to see the D bounce back but our offense still looked out of sink.

Defense
-Our secondary looked decent today. Even William Gay had a pretty good game at #2
-No big splash plays (almost had one) but Polamalu was spectacular.
-Timmons has been kind of 'meh' in the past two weeks. I'm not sure what's up with him. He was my DPOY for the first 5 games last season. :noidea:
-Keisel had a good bounceback game. McClendon looks pretty good at NT. Maybe that position isn't a top priority in the draft next year?
-Harrison looks far from 100 percent despite having a good 4th quarter. He looked very slow on several plays. He was non-existent in the first half.
-Woodley made a great play beating Seattle's tackle and TE, stopping Lynch for a loss, but was also quiet for a majority of the game.

Offense
-It looked like Mendenhall was having a lot of problems dancing in the backfield. He got stuffed on short yardage situations way too many times today. He has to hit the hole on those plays regardless if its there or not.
-Redman had a great game as usual. The kid continues to impress. Foster had an excellent block on his TD.
-Legursky stinks.
-That WR screen to Ward needs to stop. The one to Wallace had much more success for obvious reasons. Though Ward did have excellent grab on the sidelines while smiling.
-For those of you who think Wallace is still a "one-trick pony," I believe he caught a quick slant, a curl route, a go route, a 5 step turn, a WR screen and a fade for a TD. That's a nice trick.

-HUGE loss for the Ravens...after winning their SB last week I guess they forgot there was 15 games left

Well, i agree that he was off, but way off? hardly, he overthrew some recievers, but he was excellent in this game. One thing that I noticed is that he had time in the pocket, which was good to see. Also, we ran the ball with effectiveness and we stuck with the running game.

That's still the biggest problem the Steelers have and all on the OL, imo. We need better guard play in the worst way. I thought Pouncey would be able to sure up that part of the offense, but he's just not enough. The interior is worse off than the tackle positions, even with the rookie and Scott in there. It's a problem we just have to overcome, the solution is not on the roster at this time.

i'd say getting hasselbeck is an upgrade over kerry collins/vince young, and chris johnson is money. Hasselbeck made them pay for focusing too much on stopping CJ. their defense has always been decent to pretty good & physical, and they are hard to beat at home. Probably a 9-7 or 10-6 team

That's the way I wanted to see them win, with dominance, Seattle didn't even cross mid field except once. I still didn't see any real intensity, but it is the Seahawks and we were dominating most of the time. Ben was off on some throws, but overall had a good game, 22/30 w/ 298 passing yards, a touchdown, and no picks. He missed some throws and if he can reel in those throws, he will have huge games. Keisel played well, but I didn't see much pass rush, Harrison was a no show most of the game as was Woodley. I think that's bigger then what a lot of people think, with Woodley and Harrison no show's, we have no pash rush. Receivers got open, Mendenhall played well as did Redman, the D looks like they are back with the exception of the pash rush, Ben looked way better, we are definetly on the way up. Main things that bother me is how far off Ben was a few times and the lack of pass rush and pass blocking. The O line, horrible again, but that will not change this season. All said, great game, won it the way they should, like to see them work out the last few quirks and shut down the Manningless Colts like this.

YEa, that has always puzzled me, why we have a hard time defending Kerry Collins.

But anyway, good game this week. Like most people in the world, I expected us to beat Seattle. They're a bad team, but at least we made them look like a bad team. It's something. I'm mainly glad that Ben wasn't seriously injured. A lot of weaknesses still visible especially our o-line

the times kerry collins had good games vs us, he was on 2 super bowl contender teams. once on a giants team that eventually went to the super bowl (then loss to the ravens), and another on the titans who were the #1 seed. it's not so much collins vs us, but that team vs ours. I highly doubt he can lead the depleted colts vs us to a victory.
