Players: Smith Suspended

May 19, 2005 12:44 pm US/Central
(WCCO) Teammates of Minnesota Vikings Onterrio Smith said the running back has been suspended for a year.

The team would not confirm Smith?s suspension, but said Smith will be held out of the rest of developmental camp, which runs through mid-June.

"He's been excused from the rest of the off-season program and he'll be gone indefinitely," coach Mike Tice said Thursday. "I really can't speak about any reasons why or when he'll be back. It's in the league's hands. We'll leave it at that."

The team would not officially confirm if Smith was out for training camp, which begins at the end of July.

The reason for Smith's suspension was not immediately released.

Smith, 24, rushed for 579 yards as a rookie and led the Vikings last season with 544 yards.

Smith spent part of the 2004 season on the bench, serving a four game suspension for violating the NFL?s substance abuse policy. In the summer of 2004, Smith tested positive for marijuana.

At the time, Smith was in the league?s substance-abuse program for at least one other previous positive test.

In April 2005, Smith was detained at the Minneapolis/ St. Paul International Airport with a device called ?The Original Whizzinator.? Smith reportedly told police the device is used ?for making a clean urine test.?

Man I`ve done some pretty stupid thing in my life, but never had that much money riding on it. If someone were to give me millions to play football, abd I was to not do drugs, drink whatever, I`m there. Choir Boy, as along as I`m getting paid.

Just want to hear from the ladies on this...saw that all the male sports leagues have testified in front of congress. Didn't see the WNBA or LPGA though? Are we just assuming ladies wouldn't take performance enhancers? Are women in sports above dried urine and flaxseed oil? I do kinda remember it was the East GErman women swimmers starting olympic testing standards though?

Chef...i'm with you on this one. I think females are as likely as males to take performance enhancers, and it is a very good question about why they are not talking to the womens leagues and singling out the mens leagues. It might come back to kick them in the butt though when they find women using the same stuff!

I agree there are women out there doing it too. They should have to go infront of Congress also. Its only fair. Congress better be careful because they may take a lot of heat for not being so fast to check out the women's sports. The men's sports are more popular, but the women's sports are the same as the men's. They are all professional athletes in professional sports organizations.

Working a little in the supplement business, I have to attend bodybuilding shows from time to time. There are a lot of women on enhancers. My both sold more to women last show than to men. Nothing illegal, just creatines, and NO`s mostly.

the reasons at this point that the nfl and mlb are confronting congress is because they are the 2 biggest sports and consequently, the 2 sports w/ the most problems w/ steroid use. the MLB is alot less prepared to deal with, has the bigger problem and up until a few months ago, could have cared less that it was even going on.

once all the sessions are over with and congress sees what the NFL and MLB are doing to stop it,they'll call in the rest of the leagues.

I really feel like it was a witch hunt in the begining, they just wanted to take Bonds down. They didn`t want this HR record to be broke , especially by a bad attitude player. Then everything just snowballed from there!

This might not go over to well, but I am a huge Bonds fan. I actually like the guy when he was a ASU. in the College World Series, then my Pirates drafted him. I was like Holy S&(*&&.

I use to like Bonds when he was in his early years. After that I just started disliking him. Eh, what can you do lol
