Breaking story: I've learned that Max Starks visited the #Steelers South Side facility this evening. Expect Starks to be signed soon. #WPXI

How? What's the vet minimum for someone with his years of service? It's got to be near or even beyond the $750k they have right now. This smells like smoke to me.

Well we need a LT so thank god!! I like it as long as it doesn't hinder Gilberts playing time/learning.

Max Starks visited #steelers tonite and it looks as though he will be signed. Someone will be waived.

no doubt it would be an incentive laden contract. theres no telling how his surgically repaired neck is gonna hold up under live fire.

pretty sure the vet minimum is now $860,000. keep in mind a 4th of the season is already in the books and the contract would not be guaranteed. he would essentially be a week by week employee.

assuming he would play the 12 remaining games- take $860,000/16 and multiply it by twelve (or 860,000X.75) and viola! we are under the cap!

i am almost certain this is why it took 4 weeks to sign him.

"money is not an issue"

Max Starks may not be a franchise LT but compared to Jonathan Scott or Trai Essex he looks like a freaking HOFer

I don't care id we have $0.01 cap space left if we sign him, we need him (or at least a semi-reliable tackle) if we want to have any hope for the rest of the season. The offensive line is on a whole new level of suck this year. I've never seen a quarterback have such minimal time in the pocket as Ben this year.

And I really hope Gilbert keeps his job at RT over Essex or Scott, he may be a rookie and he'll have his mistakes but I still think he's a better option there.

tony hipchest

agreed that gilbert needs to stay at RT. nothing against him, but im sure he will end up getting injured at some point anyways, THEN one of the other scrubs can step in.

i also dont think starks will be along term fix (and by long term i mean longer than 4 weeks. dudes a ticking injury time bomb.

Did they have to transport that load to meet with Tomlin on a forklift or was he placed in a wheelbarrow?

arnaz isnt going anywhere.

my bet is jamon meredith who will be the least productive and cheapest player to cut.

Man, you know its bad for our line when we're relieved to see a Neck Injured overweight Max come back

But I do wish him the best, neck injuries are nothing to be taken lightly.....

tony hipchest
10-04-2011, 11:30 PM
yep.

hell yeah, im relieved (not by much as i suspect he will be injured soon).

an alternative solution i read on this board was to cut players who can actually make an nfl roster and activate 2 practice squad players.

hell, we might as well give jason capizzi a call or start grave robbing. :dang:

i hear they are going to move him to RT. starks sucks at RT.im not sure if it even matters.

at this point, id say big ben has a better shot at staying "healthy" and starting all 16 games than any of our linemen.

Theres an article on front page of nfl.com says according to a league source that we have signed starks. Im sure ben is happy about it he is close friends wuth him and was upset when starks wasnt resigned. Glad to see him back. Hopefully he starts at tackle because hes the best option we have. Even without playing yet this year hes so much better than scott. Glad to see the front office is trying to keep ben alive

AFC North blogger reports he's dropped 60 pounds and is weighing in at about 345 which is basically his playing weight. Even without practice he should be an immediate upgrade over Scott, as long as his neck holds up.

That is true, but at least the Steelers have a reliable player to protect Ben's blind side. I know Starks dropped weight, hopefully his conditioning will be up to par come Sunday even with the weight loss.

Starks signed; Chris Scott released
Posted 1 hour ago

The Steelers added depth on the offensive line today by re-signing a familiar face, offensive tackle Max Starks. Financial terms of the one-year deal were not disclosed.

Starks (6-8, 345) spent all seven years of his career with the Steelers after the team drafted him in the third round (75th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He started 68 games in seven years with Pittsburgh, including seven in 2010 before suffering a season-ending neck injury that landed him on the Reserve/Injured List on Nov. 10, 2010.

Starks started seven postseason games during his seven years in Pittsburgh. He started at left tackle in the Steelers’ Super Bowl XLIII victory over the Arizona Cardinals and started at right tackle in the team’s Super Bowl XL win against the Seattle Seahawks.

To make room on the roster, the Steelers released second-year offensive lineman Chris Scott.

Now all Starks needs is a "Montage . . . Montaaaaage."

Day 2 and still keeping the glass half full! Maybe this is a very welcomed familiar face in this time of need. Sniff, sniff - I'm gettin a little emotional here . . .

Ben must be loving this..Firts because his line is siht besides pouncey and i think Gilbert is bad especially for being a rookie comingout of the lockout.. and secondly Ben loves this guy, I wonder if he gets his old locker back--the one right next to Ben's.

I've never seen a quarterback have such minimal time in the pocket as Ben this year. .

Ben was sacked 50 times in 15 games in 2009. He's been sacked 14 times in 4 games this season. It's pretty much the same situation and it's as much attributable to Ben's style (and Arian's playcalling) as it is to the OL's weaknesses.

Because I doubt teams will be lining up to sign Scott (being an o-lineman who cannot stick the Steelers presumably hurts your marketability), can he be brought back for practice squad fodder?

Funny how well that actually worked out for the Steelers (his weight gain and all that). Wasn't he set to make 5 or 7 million for this season if he had stayed under contract? He was going to be released regardless I think (cap space), but his IR weight gain dropped his value and kept him available for just long enough lol.

As long as they don't do anything stupid and bid against themselves by slapping a franchise tag on him again.

We aren't talking just sacks. Even 2009 was nowhere near this bad. Every single play is a "hurry up and throw it", every play is a potential disaster or turnover.

IMO Gilbert is playing well for a rookie, he's been burnt a few times but he's done pretty well most of the time. I dvr the games and when I rewatch them I have payed alot of attention to him, he is rarely the problem.

Why? these aren't little kids who need a supportive back rub...these are grown men getting paid a grown mans salary...so they have to take the praise and the criticism that comes with it...does mean we don't support out team..it means we're not blind to bullshit

Max Starks said he took about half of the snaps with the first team at left tackle today and hopes that continues through the week.

Isn't it far-fetched, though, that Starks could step right in after not practicing for 11 months and win a starting job in just a few days of practice?

"It probably would be a little tough,'' he said. But . . . "We'll see how the week goes.''
