Ben Roethlisberger broke his right thumb last Sunday, but the Steelers quarterback said he will won't miss any games because of the injury.

"It will be painful but it takes a lot to keep me out," said Roethlisberger, who is wearing a velcro wrap to protect the thumb. "We'll concoct a splint. I'll have a glove on for the rest of the year."

The Steelers have a bye this week, giving Roethlisberger extra time to heal. When asked if his latest injury will affect his status for the Steelers' Nov. 27 game in Kansas City, Roethlisberger said, "Absolutely not. I'd play this week."

Roethlisberger broke his right thumb in 2005 didn't miss any games because of the injury. He sustained the same injury while leading the Steelers to a 24-17 win at Cincinnati last Sunday.

Roethlisberger didn't miss any playing time, and he completed 21 of 33 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown.

"It must have been something on the ground or I caught it on the ground but I don't remember hitting in on a helmet," Roethlisberger said.

This nugget from 2005 during the last time Ben's thumb was broken:chuckle:

This is not the first time Roethlisberger has had a similar issue with his right thumb, and it irritated former coach Bill Cowher when he was asked about it.

It first came to light in 2005 and there were public issues about it over the next two seasons.

The first known injury occurred Nov. 28 during a game in Indianapolis and Cowher continued to list his quarterback as probable, and he continued to play.

However, during a Cowher press conference Dec. 13, the coach showed his obvious frustration at the continued questions about Roethlisberger's thumb.

"Talk to him,'' Cowher told a reporter who asked about the quarterback. "I'm not going to talk about it, so don't ask me questions. You can talk to him.''

Big Ben is an animal, he'll play thru it like always, you can hurt him but you can't take him out. Thats why I love having this guy as our QB

Probably so, but thankfully they don't have too much to drum up drama about other than Ben's thumb and our WR "controversy"

Good problem to have at 7-3 and going into the bye...

Roethlisberger injury no big deal

Ben Roethlisberger announced to the world today that he has a broken thumb on his throwing hand.

Let the drama begin.

Actually, the break is a small fracture, one he played with before in 2005. It didn't hinder Roethlisberger then and it won't now.

The one difference is that the Steelers are now primarily a passing team as opposed to 2005, when if he threw it 30 times in a game, it was a lot.

The Steelers will splint the thumb and he'll wear a glove to protect it. And as we've seen in the past, Roethlisberger usually plays better, more focused football, when injured.

The news could have been worse. Think about the situations in KC, Philadelphia and Houston.

i noticed on sunday, ben was wearing a single glove on his throwing hand already, while a couple of weeks back he was only wearing one on his non-throwing hand.

which begs the question... it it better to have gloved and lost, than to have never gloved at all?
