Sad news as another quality guy is injured

Father Time is catching up to a lot of these vets - Keisel is still playing well but I wonder if Hampton will be the next DL vet to go after 2011:noidea:

Neck surgery ends season, maybe career, for Steelers' Hoke

Longtime Steelers defensive lineman Chris Hoke will have neck surgery, ending his season and perhaps his NFL career, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has learned.

Hoke, in his second consecutive start for injured Casey Hampton at nose tackle, left the Oct. 16 game against Jacksonville with what was described as a "stinger" in his neck. He has not played since.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that Hoke was being re-examined by a doctor that day. Hoke has since been replaced as the backup nose tackle by Steve McLendon.

Hoke, 35, made the Steelers as an undrafted rookie from Brigham Young in 2001 and, after going on and off the practice squad, earned a permanent roster spot in 2002.

He had his most extensive play during the 2004 season after Hampton was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Hoke started 12 games that season, including two in the post-season. He has started 18 games and played in 114 with the Steelers, his only NFL team.

This most likely ends Hoke's tenure with the Steelers as well.

most likely a career ender at his age.

very unfortunate, I thought hoke was a great and reliable backup for the steelers.

The Steelers were lucky to have Hoke. He most likely would have been a starter on another team had he not stayed in the black and gold. The run defense never saw a drop off when he was in ... not bad considering he backed-up a pro-bowler.

Who is behind Hokey as a replacement in case Big Snack cannot go?

He was an awesome backup, def. a starter on another team... I loved listening to after game interviews, Hoke is lighthearted funny dude!! Good luck with your future Hoke.

That's a shame. Hoke was a great backup for Case all of these years, and calling him a "back up" does not do him justice because he was an excellent run stopper in his own right. Who has the same second-string NT (or second-string anything, for that matter) for 10 seasons. Says something about the kind of guy and player that Chris Hoke is that we get him around for as long as we did. God speed Chris.

Him and the rest of the Steelers were great in that Christmas caroling video last year

Reliable guy and backup. I believe the team is 17-1 when he starts in Hampton's place. Probably done. Good luck and thanks Hokey.

Thanks and best wishes to Hoke if this is the case--quality player for a decade, contributed to multiple championships, and filled in admirably as a starter. One of the most valuable role players we've had.

I agree, he was one of my favorites and has a great sense of humor. Good luck Hokey!!!

Anyone behind McClendon now? Theoretically they could slide Ziggy inside, no?

We're good. Hines Ward is such a good blocker that he can play NT and be our #1 receiver. :hatsoff:

Very sad news. Chris is a beast and will be missed. If you think about it, this is but an appetizer. From now through the next season we will be seeing some of our favorite Steelers (aka. Hines, Farrior, Smith, etc?) gone.

They've slid Ziggy inside a couple of times before so I'm assuming they'd do it again if McClendon goes down with how good Heyward looks.
