1933, often thought to be the reason there is a "33" on Rolling Rock beer. Any idea if that is true?

Got it; Warren Heller.

There is a famous clip that is shown every now and then that demonstrates both how close and how far the Steelers of the late '60s and early '70s were from being really good. In it, a Steelers player is running in the open field for a touchdown... and then he inexplicably spikes the ball at the 10 yard line!

Who is that player?

Plex actually had similar plays not once, but twice! As a rookie, Burress "caught a pass, fell down untouched, and then?forgetting the primary rules difference between college and pro football?spiked the rock. A Jacksonville player picked up the live ball and ran it back for six as Burress stood emanating waves of befuddlement." And later in his career, he was motoring toward the end zone for an easy untouched 6 and whacked the ball off his hip for a fumble.

What a bonehead. 100 dollar talent with a 10 cent head.

Wow twice!

I knew about the original mental meltdown - the second shows a weird lack of co-ordination - im presumeing he didn't purposefully hit the ball off his thigh?

I guess we are all just waiting for his 1st in a Giants shirt.

11 in 1975.

11 in 1975.
12 '78-'79
includes:
last 5 reg season games '78
divisional game
afc championship game
super bowl XIII
first 4 reg season games '79

That would be for regular season, your question didn't ask the longest regular season streak (before the 14 that ended the '04 season) but rather "the longest winning streak in steelers history" which would be 12 spanning '78 -'79. the longest regular season streak, before the 14, would be the 11 in '75.

If that is the correct answer, here's my question. What actor and former sitcom star was once drafted by the Steelers?

Sorry, that is wrong according to my source

Lyn

FYI the Steelers moved their training camp around alot in the early years before settling in at St Vincents for the last 39 years. Among the locations are:
West Liberty (WV) State
St Bonaventure in Olean, NY
Hershey, PA
Slippery Rock, PA
California, PA
Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, PA
Rhode Island University

Ed O'Neill (AL Bundy on Married with children) I believe he was a Fullback. He did not make the final roster.

That is correct.

Are these locations in any paticular order? St. Bonaventure was the only location I could find any mention of, and that was in reference to a trainging camp in the 1950's.

That's right!
In 1963, Johnny "Blood" McNally became the first Pittsburgh Steelers player inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. McNally went by the alias "Johnny Blood" during his NFL career because he wanted to protect his college eligibility, of which he still had a year remaining, when he went pro. McNally, possibly the best wide receiver during his time in the league, was also known for his devastating hits on defense. He played for several teams, including the Milwaukee Badgers (1925-26), the Duluth Eskimos (1926-27), the Pottsville Maroons (1928), the Green Bay Packers (1929-33 & 1935-36), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1934 & 1937-38). During his last two years in Pittsburgh, McNally not only played offense and defense, but also served as coach. He died on November 28, 1985, at the age of 82.

Why is the Steelers logo only displayed on one side of their helmets?

Lyn
08-16-2006, 02:13 PM
Why is the Steelers logo only displayed on one side of their helmets?

In 1962, Republic Steel of Cleveland approached the Steelers and suggested
that they use the Steelmark logo on their helmets since they represented the
Steel community.

The Steelers were hesitant to use what amounted to an advertisement on their
uniforms but decided to give it a try. At the time they were wearing gold
helmets and weren't sure what the decals would look like.

So they instructed the equipment manager to put them on just the right side,
so they could see the helmets with and without the logo to see how it
looked.

The Steelers finished that season 9-5 - the best in team history. That was
considered a good omen, and they decided to keep using the logo.

In 1963, the Steelers petitioned the Iron and Steel Institute for the right
to modify the logo to read "Steelers" instead of "Steel".

They also changed the color of the helmets from gold to black to better show
the logo. They are already getting questions about why the logo is on just
one side and decide that the uniqueness of it warrants keeping it that way.

The Steelers go 7-3-3 and win the right to play the Giants for the division
title. They lose, but it is considered another excellent omen and the helmet
has remained virtually unchanged since (only a center stripe and the player
number have been added. The facemasks were gray but changed to black in the
late 70s).

So it was a little uncertainty and a little superstition that made it that
way. The Steelers are the only team in the NFL, CFL, WFL or CFA that wear a
logo on only one side.
