You'd be amazed at how many foaming-at-the-mouth racists there are in academia. Not that being in academia is the same as being smart, but you'd think, maybe... but no.
A cohort of my sister at her university was telling her stories about going to conferences with the late Joseph Campbell. I guess every other word out of his mouth (when the cameras weren't rolling, that is) was "******". Dude was a sociopath, and got away with it.
Edit: forgot about profanity controls here. "N-word" is what that was supposed to say.
