View Full Version : 2012 could be the Steelers year again

It's early to make such a proclamation, I know. Still, it's not so outlandish to make an early prediction about a team who has been in the game which decides who gets to hoist Lombardi's Trophy 3 times in 6 years.

First, the case(s) against the Steelers:
Losses in key personnel... check
Aging key personnel... check
Injury concerns... check
Obvious, exploitable deficiencies... check
Tough schedule... check

Why I don't think it matters, stats, player analysis and anything else aside:
I think the Steelers will be pissed off.

Lord knows the fans of Pittsburgh are 'wounded' after that playoff loss. It was a humbling loss. You know it, I know it, even Carol Channing knows it.

So considering how mad Steelers fans are, imagine how fired up the players are!

The last time the Steelers lost in that kind of fashion in the playoffs they responded by going 12-4, played shutdown defense all year long and won it all the next year.

I'm sure many of you closer to the City of Champions enjoyed more than a few brews throughout that glorious season. I only wish I could have been there myself.

The fire and focus that may have arguably been 'lacking' last year may be there again this year, as it was in 2008. I would bet on it.

Lastly, as a bit of broadstroke analysis to pad my clearly biased opinion:

The Ravens are getting old as well and are choke artists (Joe Flaccid), the Pats are getting old, too and the Steelers played them well last year, the Colts are rebuilding, the Chargers and Jets are the Chargers and Jets and the Steelers have Peyton's number. Who does that leave in the AFC? The Chiefs? The Bengals? The Texans?!

The AFC is up for grabs, the Steelers have enough stud horses to make a run and I don't think Tim Tebow is likely to stop the Steelers (miracuously) again.

Many are 'are on their guard', perhaps for the best, but I really think 2012/13 will erase any bad memories of 2011/12.

And I will gladly go to Vega$ and put my money where my mouth is.

the texans were the best team in the AFC last year hands down, until schaub got injured. they will be trouble to deal with again next year. with that said, I think we can beat anyone out there if our o-line can stay healthy.

Spot on. I think we'd of made it to the Super Bowl if we we're healthy going into Denver.

I think staying healthy is largely a function of getting younger, which we are doing. It should get significantly better if Colon plays out the year and we can get one or two starters (and some depth) in the draft.

I don't know if your main argument as to why they will win a super bowl is because "they are pissed off" is much to go on.

Not many chumps on the schedule like last year. Chumps I might add that we barely would beat. Chumps with mediocre QBs as well. They have to survive that schedule and make the playoffs. Hopefully by that time they will be up to speed with more then likely a new starter at Guard, Inside Linebacker, and Cornerback, not to mention a new Offensive Coordinator.

There are a lot more questions going into this season then there has been in awhile and a lot of them rely on having a solid draft with very little mistakes if any being made. I'm always hopeful but right now I would say don't bet your house on that super bowl win just yet.

If you do make a bet in Vegas scan your receipt and please post. I'm curious how much you believe in your conviction they will win the super bowl.

This is a great point... exept the injuries were to Ben, Pouncey and Mendenhall. Not a very old group. However, mostly your point is correct. I just think we had bad luck last year.

Willie Colon has missed 31 of last 32 reg season games so he brings me no comfort - nobody on that line does really - not even Pouncey or Gilbert. Pouncey better find a way to stay healthy later into the season. Problem is - we are "big" on the line - but not athletic - thus far they have been built for mudding and not for pass protection (yes some of it is on Ben) so they always find a way to fall all over and step on, stumble on each other. If it isn't addressed like we've been saying it should be since 2008 then I wouldn't hope for more than a quarter of the season with the same guys

Good post OP! I somewhat agree! HEALTH will be EVERYTHING entering the playoffs! Last year, pffft, last several years we seemed to limp into the post season far worst than any other team! I think after last year, the entire training staff should have been fired and replaced!

For some reason, I got a gut-check that we'll be representing the AFC again in the Super Bowl in 2012. Of course, New England will stand in our way as well as teams like Houston and even (yes, I'm serious) teams like the Oakland Raiders who I think will bounce back in a big way in 2012 as I see the Ravens taking a step back in '12 (lets face it, they lost to some ill teams last season and had a nice run from '08-'11, their due for a setback, ala us in 2009.)

Wherever it is, the AFC Championship will be Pittsburgh/ New England. Mark my words.

While I always want to win the SB, something a little closer on the hit list for us should be to get even with those SOB Rat-turds.....

The Steelers need to *** them up for last year

RED ZONE TD's need to happen...

We were 12-4 with a really piss poor (I think 24th in the league) in the Red Zone. If you knock that down to the top 12 we are in the Super Bowl against the Giants instead of the Pats.

Until the team starts crushing the teams they should instead of playing down to their level the struggle will continue.

If our worst unit (O-line by far) improves significantly we have a good shot.
Our running woes, Ben getting punished.....it falls on them.
Our game planning, attack strategy, and play selection should improve with Haley...we should be excited and hopeful about that.
The competition is getting tougher.

I'd be more worried about Houston if they didn't shell out top dollar for a RB and then cut some OL and lose Mario.

I think playing a soft AFC South will work against them, too.

No 'ifs' there.

It all depends on the odds for 'Burgh and the odds of the other prop bets (I've got a hole to burn in my pocket this year!).

Obviously I'm not going to throw down a G (especially if the odds are <6:1), but I may place multiple bets as the season goes on if/when the Steelers odds go down.

I agree with you here. The Texans had a lot of chances in Bmore to get a win there, with there third string QB. The loss of Mario Williams and Demarco Ryan can hurt their defense though.
