Chuck Finder of CBS Sports reported Friday morning (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/post/18961863) undrafted free agent QB Alex Tanney has left the Steelers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/pittsburgh-steelers), opting to go through rookie minicamp with (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/post/18961863)the Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/buffalo-bills) instead.
Finder wrote Tanney, a Monmouth product, went to Buffalo due to the fact the Steelers brought in Oregon QB Darron Thomas, and apparently, didnít want to compete against him.
http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/blog/star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg
Thomas is in the athletic mold the Steelers seem to like in their project back-up quarterbacks. Another Oregon product, Dennis Dixon (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34443/dennis-dixon), served as the Steelers back-up until he became a free agent in 2012.

Dixon has not yet signed anywhere else, and has previously made mention of wanting to go somewhere he could compete for a starting job either now or in the future.

The Steelers also signed former Ravens (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/baltimore-ravens) quarterback Troy Smith (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/16643/troy-smith) to a futures contract this off-season. Both of whom can claim their mobility and athleticism as their biggest strengths.

Adding Thomas in the fold, Tanney must not have seen the Steelers as the best option for him to catch on to either the practice squad or the 53-man roster.

Looks like we won't see the "Trick Shot QB" in black and gold after all.

Alex Tanney will be fine. - Working as the opening act for Las Vegas Shows or Sporting events.

Dennis Dixon wanted to go someplace he could start. How's Canada? - Arena Football?

It's sad when you bring in all of these QBs and Batch is still by far the best. The Steelers rate a 0 on finding backup QBs

this ALL the way. Plenty of other teams have good backups and we just can't do this AT ALL. Batch is horrendous....at best. We need to fix this, pronto. If Ben goes out w/injury, we're screwed.
The Steelers are good at most everything, but i guess you can't be good at everything. We just can't do this one whatsoever.

Next years draft should be the time when the Steelers look to the future and draft a QB in the 1st round. This team is getting younger in all the right places but Ben isn't gonna be the QB (due to mounting injuries) that will play into his mid 30s

I agree that we will draft a QB next year but I'm willing to bet a lot of $ that it won't be in the first round.

whoa, partner.
I think we will likely draft one next year, but probably not until like the 4th or 5th round, if that.
We'll be all over defensive picks (linebacking, defensive backs, etc) with our first few like mud on a pig. Ben still should have many years left, especially with the huge upgrade in our OL. That was the plan.

Yes we did. But I get no comfort from that stat for this upcoming season.
Don't count on lightning striking the same place twice.

I hope Ben does have many years left and the offensive line is on the up and up but saying that the future QB(and leader) is only worth a 4th or 5th round pick doesn't add up. Maybe they wait till the 2nd round but you don't wait till Christmas Eve to do your important shopping.

The future QB won't be drafted next year. Future QBs are not drafted until the end for the current QB is on the horizon.

And people shitting on Batch should educate themselves better. He's easily one of the better backup QBs in the league, and his win-loss record with the Steelers is only one indication of that.

Charlie will win you some regular season games with not much on the line, but i have my doubts he would do very well in a big game or playoffs at this stage in his career. That being said, we could be worse off.

Nobody is "shitting" on Batch. Batch is still a good and reliable QB but the guy is in his 36-37 and won't be around for another 4-5 seasons. The Steelers drafted Ben in the 1st round and I would say its worked out pretty damn good for the Steelers why not Draft another next year and have him Develop behind Ben instead of throwing a Rookie QB out to the Wolves. The chances of a Rookie QB having the instant success Ben has had is not good, most elite QBs in the league have needed a little time and guidance and I'd like to enjoy the next several years of Steeler football as much as I've enjoyed these.

Batch and Lefty are not the solution at backup QB. Neither one seems to be able to stay on the field for a full game without getting injured.

Its OK, Sean Spence is the next Ray Lewis............so we could win with Trent Dilfer at the helm if needed.

Ben just turned 30 and has at least another 5-6 years left in him. why would you want to draft his replacement with a high premium pick next season that could be used instead on a real position of need like safety or WR if we can't re-sign Mike Wallace? the rookie QB will only sit on the bench and when his contract is up he could well go elsewhere.

I think the Steelers will draft a QB next year but it won't be in the first or second round.

1st or 2nd round QB in next draft?? Ben cound last a lot longer if we used some of the backups once in a while. How many do we have on staff now?? :banging:

The Steelers' solution to backup QBs is obviously veterans with experience, not 5th round developmental guys. For now, it's Batch and Leftwich. When they're gone, it'll be some other veteran that lost his starting job most likely. And then when it's time to find a new quarterback, hopefully they try to draft one, and be lucky enough to be able to.

Face facts. If your Franchise QB goes down, then you're not going to win a SB, so who cares if your backup is a world beater? All you need a backup QB to do is
1) Win a couple of games should your Franchise QB fall over for a bit and
2) Develop into your next big QB - but it's much too early for this.
Batch & Lefty can fill this role just fine imho

Back up QB is a concern....I agree Batch and especially Mr. Inaccurate Leftwich are the answer....I'm sure what they have in camp will get a look but don't understand why they are not bring QB's in who will really compete...

this. would like to see us draft a future qb in 2 years tho.

but yeah any team that loses their franchise qb for the season is screwed. look at the texans last year, or better yet the colts

There will never be another Ray Lewis, he is one of a kind.

Like L.T in the 80s.

I know he isn't a beast like he once was, if you watch older footage, you would get goose bumps. Its sad. He will have a Statue at the BANK like Johnny U when he retires.

Why did KDKA Pittsburgh just run a story on Tanney? I missed it but they hyped it up like he was here. Anyone know what's going on and why did the story air?
