LOCAL STAR TO COMPETE IN STEEL CITY

Former Holy Cross and Southern Mississippi kicker Danny Hrapmann has signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In his career at USM, Hrapmann made 116-of-117 extra points and connected on 49-of-65 field goals (75%), scoring 263 points.

In 2011, Hrapmann was 61-of-62 on extra points and made 23-of-34 field goals for the Golden Eagles.

Hrapmann started his college career at Southeastern Louisiana in 2007 before transferring to Southern Miss.

The 5'9, 164" Hrapmann enjoyed a stellar career under Barry Wilson at Holy Cross.

He was a two-time All-District 8-5A selection and was named to the New Orleans All-Metro and the 5A All-State team with the Tigers.

nice pickup... here's what walterfootball had on him....

http://walterfootball.com/college/SouthernMiss_logo.gif Danny Hrapmann, K, Southern Miss
Height: 5-9. Weight: 160.
Projected Round (2011): 6-FA.
4/26/12: Hrapman did not kicked as well in 2011. He was 23-of-34 on field goal attempts. His strong leg caused him to take on some attempts that other teams wouldn't try.

8/22/11: Danny Hrapmann is a strong-legged kicker who had a quality 2010 season. He was 26-of-31 overall. Hrapmann connected on 6-of-8 from 40-49 yards and 2-of-3 from 50+ yards. He had six touchbacks last season with a streak of 17 field goals made in a row.

Wonder if he will last. The other 2 left in a hurry. How hard is it to find a decent kicker?

Of his misses in 2011 (67.7% accuracy)

3 were from 50+ (0 of 3 total)
6 were from 40-49 yards (7 of 13 total)
2 were in 30-39 range (5 of 7 total)
0 in 20-29 range (11of 11)

His 2010 was very good
2010 26 of 31 83.9% 55/55 extra points

I believe he can punt as well in a emergency capacity. Could have a shot if he regains 2010 form.

--- The Steelers reportedly have signed another kicker, Danny Hrapmann of Southern Mississippi. Dave Byan wrote in his Steelers Depot blog that former kicker Michael Husted wrote of the signing on Twitter. The Steelers have still not announced their release of undrafted rookie kicker Grant Ressel, who was released 10 days ago. Perhaps they will announce the Hrapmann signing -- if indeed they have signed him -- sometime before training camp begins. The Steelers do not seem serious in signing anyone to compete with Shaun Suisham, but merely to have a second leg in camp as normal.

NOT confident in Sushiam. Hopefully this guy will last until camp, and split the load in preseason. May the best man win including touchbacks.

yeah me neither. i remember watching the chiefs game last year with my brother (who's a chiefs fan) and when we didnt attempt a long 48+ yard fg, he was like "oh that's disrespect right there!", and I was like 'dude, have you seen this guy kick? they're not going for the fg cause he won't make that.'

Weekend mailbag: Future for Steelers kicker

May, 19, 2012
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

Time to open up some mail, which includes a couple of questions concerning the Pittsburgh kicker.

C from Ontario, Canada, writes: Shaun Suisham grew up close to me and I want him to do well. But I'm a Steeler fan first, so why is he on the team still? He bombed hard last year, his field-goal percentage was 31st in the league last season. Please tell me this young guy can beat Shaun out! Or at least the Steelers will do something.

Dennis from Clermont, Fla.: Jamison, when will the Steelers get serious about needing a kicker? With a team that has a defense that can always keep games close, an above average kicker is a necessity, but the team never invests in that position.

Jamison Hensley from AFC North headquarters responds: There has to be some surprise that the Steelers didn't bring in serious competition to take on Suisham. Pittsburgh recently worked out Dave Rayner, another less-than-stellar veteran, but it didn't sign him. While no kicker for the Steelers will ever rank high in field-goal percentage, because half of his games are at challenging Heinz Field, Suisham struggled on the road as well. He made 9 of 13 kicks beyond 30 yards away from home (69 percent).

This lack of consistency in the kicking game can become a problem, especially if the Steelers can't improve on being the 18th-ranked red-zone offense. The only competition for Suisham is Danny Hrapmann, an undrafted rookie out of Southern Mississippi. He connected on 67.6 percent (23 of 34) of his field goals last season. In other words, he's not a real threat to Suisham. The Steelers should have looked at a veteran like Neil Rackers, who since signed with Washington. Pittsburgh should be more concerned about its kicker situation.

There will be kickers cut during the preseason that I'm sure the FO will look at.
