Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Day Two OTA Practice Recap Wednesday

May 23rd, 2012 by Dave Bryan

Wednesday marked day two of the first OTA practice session of the 2012 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and we have quite a few nuggets to pass along via the media reports today.

Not participating again on Wednesday were Ramon Foster (hamstring), Brett Keisel (family function), Casey Hampton (knee), Rashard Mendenhall (knee) and Jason Worilds (hand), David DeCastro (school), Mike Adams (school), Alameda Ta'amu (school) and Mike Wallace (holdout). Ike Taylor was present on Wednesday after missing Tuesday because he arrived in town late. Taylor did tell the media that he may not be present for all OTA's this off-season.

Mendenhall told the media that he is taking it day to day right now and said that being ready for week one of the season is the best case scenario. He was quoted by Scott Brown as saying, "Ill be back at some point. Its just a matter of what point that is."

Isaac Redman told the media that the new offense is designed to be easier on the offensive line this year and he expects the running backs to be more involved in the passing game this year as well. Redman on learning the new Todd Haley offense according to Mike Prisuta, "It's tough on everybody. We're just trying to get the hang of it. We'll see how it goes." Redman also told the media that tight end David Johnson has been moved to fullback on a full-time basis and that he no longer attends meetings with the tight ends. Will Johnson, as expected, is getting reps at fullback as well according to Mark Kaboly.

Kaboly also reported that Trai Essex was told he is to concentrate on left tackle, but that he should also be ready for the other four positions on the offensive line as well. Cortez Allen was spotted by Kaboly working as the first team nickelback. Keenan Lewis was the starting left cornerback opposite Taylor, who says he is expecting a whole lot out of Lewis this year.

Brown reported James Harrison was a bit surprised by the news that he would have to wear knee pads in the future. Harrison was quoted as saying, "Youve got to wear knee pads too? Wow. I guess Ill just have to get used to it."

Kaboly reports that Steve McLendon, who is listed at 280 on the Steelers website, told him today that he currently weighs 325 pounds.

Former Steeler center and future Hall of Famer Dermontti Dawson watched today's OTA session.

I will add more to these report after going through some audio from interviews today.

Ryan Clark and Mike Tomlin shoot verbal jabs across the field at practice

May 23, 2012

Steelers Safety Ryan Clark and Coach Mike Tomlin had a little fun with one another today in practice according to Mark Kaboly. Clark and Tomlin did a little verbal sparring across the field at one another.

Clark was poking fun at the offense and Tomlin was poking fun at Clark. Clark picking at QB Ben Roethlisberger about holding onto the ball. Ryan Clark yelling across field to Tomlin: If your QBs going to hold on to ball that long, you better draft some more OL in 1st round Tomlin firing back at Clark. Tomlin Im going to draft a safety next year a free safety.

This is good stuff. Practice is important but it also needs to be fun. This is still a good group of guys with great chemistry. That is what helps this team overcome some of the short comings they have. It is a unit that even while picking on one another still would go to battle for any guy on this team.

Good to see them having some fun.

Hopefully it's a safety that can suit up in Denver.

Inconsistent hands was one of the knocks on him. Let's hope he works on that. He wouldn't be the first player to enter the league with dropping issues and later succeed.

There is a reason why he was a 7th round pick.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 Day Three OTA Practice Recap Thursday

Thursday, May 24th, 2012 by Dave Bryan

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their final day of their first OTA session of the 2012 season and below is a recap of news and information that surfaced on Twitter and the web today.

Brett Keisel returned to make the final practice after attending a family function. Jonathan Dwyer was excused to attend a family graduation. Ben Roethlisberger, Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Ike Taylor and Jerricho Cotchery all were reportedly given the day off. Remaining sidelined were Rashard Mendenhall (knee), Casey Hampton (knee) and Jason Worilds (hand/wrist?). Of course David DeCastro (school), Mike Adams (school), Alameda Ta'amu (school) and Mike Wallace (holdout) remain absent. It is unknown if Ramon Foster (hamstring) was able to practice any of the three days this week.

Mark Kaboly reports that Marcus Gilbert says not to count him out at left tackle this season quite yet and that Gilbert called it his dream position. Kaboly quoted Gilbert as saying, "I'm not counting it out 100% that they arent going to move me over to left. Thats my dream. My passion.

Kaboly also said that he thought that wide receiver Juamorris Stewart looked good on Thursday and was the star of the day. Mike Prisuta reported that a lot of guys flashed during first three days of OTAs, but Baron Batch consistently caught his eye and he said that he is looking strong, quick and determined.

After the Thursday OTA session was over, Antonio Brown and Leonard Pope were still out catching balls from the JUGS machine according to Steelers Digest.

Ed Bouchette passed along word that Keenan Lewis said that he thinks that he will make the Pro Bowl this year.

steelers.com has a video recap of the first OTA session of the season up as well as a short interview with Keisel, who is sporting a fine beginnings of yet another beard.

The best news of all coming out of the first three days of off-season practice is that there appears to have been no serious injuries. The nature and the seriousness of the Worilds injury that had him sidelined all week is still unknown and that perhaps is the only real negative news to come out this week.

The Steelers will be back on the field next week for their second OTA session of the off-season.

^ wouldn't it be something if baron batch could push redman for the starter role? it's not like he's a tiny rb.

looking forward to training camp

"WR Juamorris Stewart was today's star. Don't ask because I have no clue who he is, but he looked good."
