Steelers Sign Sixth-Round Draft Pick

PITTSBURGH ? The Steelers announced the signing of rookie center Marvin Philip to a multi-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

Philip (6-1, 307) was chosen by the Steelers in the sixth round (201st overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft. He is the fourth of nine Steelers draft picks to sign with the team.

Philip, a two-time All-American at California-Berkeley, was the anchor of the Bears' offensive line his final two seasons. He also was twice named a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the best center in college football. Philip earned first-team All-Pac 10 honors as both a junior and senior.

Philip helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rushers in each of his final two seasons. Having served on a Mormon church mission for two years after his freshman campaign, he returned to action and helped the team rank ninth in the NCAA in rushing (235.3 avg.) while being named the team's MVP in 2005.

Everything I've read on this guy has been positive... maybe he can challenge Okobi for the opportunity to be the next center in Pittsburgh.
