STAAL TURNS DOWN 10-YEAR CONTRACT OFFER FROM PENGUINS

It appears that Jordan Staal isn't looking at a long-term contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins at this time.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports on Twitter that Staal has turned down a 10-year offer from the Penguins, indicating to the club that he doesn't plan on signing an extension now.

"He is not prepared to enter into a contract extension at this time," Staal's agent, Paul Krepelka, told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Staal scored 25 goals and 25 assists in 62 games with the Penguins in 2011-12. He led the team in playoff scoring, notching six goals and three assists in the Penguins' six-game series loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Staal is entering the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $4 million per year. Though just 23 years old, under the current collective bargaining agreement he would be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2012-13 season.

I do not know anything about the third player (d-man) the Pens got for Staal, but from what little I know about Faulk (initially reported as the possible third player in the deal) I would have preferred him. Surely a lock top C like Staal was worth him in return, but clearly the Canes had the leverage as Staal was going to sign there next season as a FA regardless.

So it's better to get something, I guess... *sigh*

---

The loss of Jordan Staal is going to hurt more and more as the years pass. It's going to dwarf the loss of Max Talbot.

I think every fan, general hockey or Pens enthusiast alike, knew that it was extremely unlikely for Burgh to retain their murderers row of #1 picks from 4 consecutive years (Fluery-Geno-Crosby-Staal). Still, as inevitable as this dark day was, it sucks to see it happen with so much potential left untapped.

So much to say on the subject...

JS is only 23 and he clearly has 60+ PT potential, even as a 2nd line winger or 3rd line C for the Pens. And they did offer him a fair shake [deal].

I get that he wants to be a 'featured guy' and play with his bros. Still, why pass up the ideal situation (where the Cup is in reach every year) in Burgh playing with Crosby and Geno???

I don't think Brandon Sutter is going to cut the mustard as a replacement. Sure, he'll be a prototypical solid #3 C, probably a TyKe lite (although TyKe is already pretty lightweight) type, but the depth Staal provided (PP/PK/Extra attacker/injuries/or just plain offensive assault 'best line') is probably going prove to be difficult, if not impossible, to duplicate/replace as the years go on.

JS was my favorite Pen, mostly because Geno is too enigmatic and I felt JS never got his due.

Now he's going to get it and, despite playing for a sham of a franchise in Carolina, I wish him all the best.

Go get Parise!!!

Pens continue to deal, send Michalek to Phoenix

The busiest man at the 2012 NHL Draft? Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero.

After orchestrating the Jordan Staal trade and making two first-round selections in Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta, Shero went back to the trading game by flipping defensman Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix in exchange for prospect Harrison Ruopp plus a 3rd-round pick this year (81st) and goalie Marc Cheverie.

(Oh yeah, Shero’s also angling for Zach Parise.)

why yes he did

JORDAN STAAL EXCITED ABOUT OPPORTUNITY WITH HURRICANES

"It's not too often just to have brothers in the NHL, but to play alongside one is a very special thing," Staal said. "If I did sign that 10-year extension with Pittsburgh, that opportunity to play with Eric would dwindle a lot, and that was a little part of why I didn't do that. It's a very exciting time for myself and Eric and our family. ... It's going to be a very neat time in my career."

I'm actually happy about this. With both Staal and Michalek gone (and Martin is surely on the chopping block), that frees up 15 mill in cap space.

Very smart move by Shero though. Staal wasn't going to stay here after next season anyway, and his value would have gone down after that.

He's very serious about Parise and Suter too. If he managed to get both of them and shed Martin I think I'd cream myself.

Congrats on his wedding though, I know they've been together forever. Wish him luck in Carolina and hope he has fun playing with his brothers.

Go get Parise!......interesting...throwing in Martin in a Suter trade too?

If Nashville wants to add other players on July 1, it will be hard to identify which types of players without knowing the Predators’ salary structure.

This is not to say the Predators should cut ties with Suter and move on. He’s a core player and arguably the best player available on the market. But you have to wonder what will happen if Plan B becomes a reality.

For example, Penguins defenseman Paul Martin could be part of this situation. He’s a bit overpaid at $5 million, which is not exactly a great number if you’re Nashville. But according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he is a candidate for a trade. Martin, 31, is the type of player who could benefit from a change of scenery. And while he may cost a lot in terms of money, the Predators could get him on a salary dumping situation.

The Penguins are reportedly clearing cap space for a run at Zach Parise and potentially Suter. Pens General Manager Ray Shero and Poile were seen talking multiple times at the NHL draft last weekend. They also have some history, with Shero being a former assistant general manager with the Predators.

I'd almost rather them get Suter instead of Parise. Both would be fantastic of course, but I feel our greater need is on defense. We've got people that can score with Sid and Geno, and decent wingers can be picked up...Suter though would be a huge upgrade.

No, both him and Suter signed matching 10 year/$98 mill contracts with Minnesota last week. Pretty sure the news came when the forum was down lol.

Semin and Doan are the big FA's on the table now, and Nash still a possibility for a trade. (wouldn't mind seeing Doan here for the right price)

For defense I guess either Kubina or Spacek would be ok. Not a lot to choose from though really.
