No deal imminent between Ravens and Ray Rice

Posted by Darin Gantt on July 10, 2012

With the clock ticking toward next Monday’s deadline for franchised players to sign long-term deals, you can tell who has leverage, and who doesn’t.

Drew Brees knows he can squeeze the Saints, while Ray Rice apparently doesn’t have the same kind of juice.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, “no deal is imminent,” for the Ravens running back.

If Rice doesn’t get a long-term deal by next Monday, he’ll play out the year under a $7.742 million franchise tag.

That’s not bad for the short-term, but it’s far from recent deals for Texans running back Arian Foster (five years, $43.5 million) and Eagles running back LeSean McCoy (five years, $45.615 million)

Rice has yet to sign his tender, and has worked out on his own away from the team.

“I miss it,” Rice said during cornerback Lardarius Webb’s charity softball game. “That’s one thing you miss is the camaraderie with the guys. As far as playing football, I know I’m always going to be up to speed.

“The best thing about my situation is that we have the same offensive coordinator. I miss the camaraderie. It’s sort of like the lockout last year. It’s sort of that feeling for me. I know those guys are working hard. I’m just happy to be out here with these guys having fun.”

Barring movement between now and Monday, he may just have a year’s worth of fun in Baltimore.

Anything can happen but the way it looks Rice and Wallace could be with different teams next year.

Rice would look good in B&G... :chuckle:

Which actually brings up a good poll question... Wallace or Rice? Who would you take?

That's a tough one. I think I'd lean towards Wallace because he doesn't have Raven taint on him. :chuckle:

Steelers Can Look Forward To Ray Rice In 2012

Jul 16th, 2012 by CraigSteelers

The questions surrounding Ray Rice’s future with the Ravens can be put to rest, and the Steelers can look forward to facing off against the pesky former Rutgers running back in 2012. Prior to today’s franchise tag deadline, the Baltimore Ravens signed Ray Rice to a 5-year deal totaling $40 million dollars should he hit all his incentives.

Rice would have cost the Ravens over $7 million against the cap were he to retain the franchise tag without signing a new deal before the end of today. By signing Rice now, the Ravens will save $2.7 million in cap room. Should Rice become injured between now and March, and Rice is guaranteed another $7 million. The deal is set up so that it can be restructured to help the team again in 2013 should they run into more cap issues – kudos to the agent and Ravens for constructing a pretty solid and incentive filled deal.

With Rice taken care of, the Ravens can now turn their attention to Joe Flacco, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. Were the two sides continue to be at odds at the start of the off season in 2013, then the Ravens can slap him with a franchise tag to delay him walking away. But, just as what happened with Rice, the team will need to reach a deal with him or else get hit with a pretty hefty cap hit for the franchise tag.
