Steelers sign third-round draft pick
Wednesday, July 26, 2006

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers today signed safety Anthony Smith, a third-round draft choice from Syracuse and their second overall selection, to a three-year contract.

Terms were not immediately available.

Smith expects to compete with Ryan Clark, a veteran free-agent signing from the Washington Redskins, for the starting job at free safety that opened when Chris Hope signed with the Tennessee Titans.

"That's the plan,'' said Smith's agent, Ken Sarnoff.

The Steelers report to training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe Friday.

I think Smith can become the McFadden of last season. Rookie promise and big future talent.

I totally agree. I also think Smith will make a impact on special teams this year. Smith blocked 6 kicks in his college career. I think he will block one this year.

Wasn't aware of that stat. Thank you. I don't remember.......did we have any blocked kicks this past season? Too lazy to look it up.

No problem bro. I can't remember either if we had any blocked kicks this past year. Give me a second and I'll try to find out though.

Oh you don't have to look it up. I was just wondering if anybody knew off the top of their head. If you do happen to look it up I appreciate it.

i dont think we had any.

sinorice moss signed for a little under a million a year and he was the 44th player picked. this should give an indication on the type of $$$ holmes and reid will get. a little more and a little less?

"The four-year contract is worth $3.51 million and includes $1.91 million in guarantees. The Giants also included $100,000 in incentives, which isn't often done on a second-round contract."

They DID have a blocked kick, but I can't be more specific than that. I knew because they were my team defense in fantasy last season, and I just verified in my records they did, in fact, have one. I'll dig deeper to see if I can find when, think it was towards the end of the season.

Just looked it up. Kimo made our one and only BK last season during our 18-3 victory against the Vikings in week 15.

Nope. All it stated in the PPG this morning is that he's expected to sign today. I have yet to hear an announcement.

Smith is a good sign. He is fast, aggressive, and finds the ball. So dont be suprised if he plays a little more than specials this year.

I think he'll be a contributor in the dime by mid year, special teams from the start.

BNG203...........this morning it stated in the PPG that "Jacobs has come to terms in principle on a three year agreement, although he will not sign his contract until today."

This is just a rumor, but word has it that Holmes is signed but they are not going to announce the signing until Friday. I have no idea why they would decide to wait to announce the signing.

I was hoping the Reid signing would quickly follow the Smith signing yesterday.

SANTURDIO A STEELER?

We're picking up some info from our sources in the 'Burgh regarding the status of negotiations between the Steelers and first-round draft pick Santurdio, the 25th overall selection this year.

Word is that a deal is very close, if not already done.

The news is shocking, given the reputation of agent Joel Segal for refusing to do a first-round deal until the guys taken before and after his client have signed.

In this case, the player taken with the No. 24 pick (Bengals corner Johnathan Joseph) and the player selected at No. 26 (Bills defensive tackle John McCargo) have not agreed to terms.

It also remains to be seen whether and to what extent the Steelers have built protections into the deal, given that Santurdio was arrested twice in a three-week period earlier this year.

Stay tuned.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm - Not the most reliable source. Actually, a pathetic excuse for football info site. They are basically telling us what Prisuta told us yesterday.

Just reported on KDKA News at 5 that Santonio's agent stated that the report going around on the net is false.
