View Full Version : Bill Simmons picking us to finish 6-10; talking heads doubting AGAIN

Same story, every ****ing year. The Steelers are too old. We're due for a downturn.

I would like to cordially extend a gigantic middle finger on behalf of all of Steeler Nation to the national media. EVERY YEAR they forget that the Pittsburgh Steelers are the best-run organization in the league; that we have a top-5 defense, year in, year out, no matter who is playing; that we have made it to the final round of the AFC playoffs in 8 of the last 18 seasons and won 2 Super Bowls since the almighty Patriots won one.

EVERY YEAR no one talks about us while they fawn over Tim ****ing Tebow, or the Eagles "dream team," or the Cowboys chances this year, or the five rookie quarterbacks at the helm this year, and we don't hear one word about our team because its not full of loudmouth, look-at-me idiot players and coaches. I've heard the same shit from multiple media members, picking us to finish third, this and that, our time is over.

Well, I say **** YOU! :tt04: Gentleman, meet Ben Roethlisberger. He's a top-5 quarterback and has played in three Super Bowls. Now picture him surrounded by the kind of explosive talent on offense in Wallace, Sanders, Brown and Rainey that he has never had the chance to really work with, and look out. We will prove them all wrong, AGAIN.

It starts Sunday night a few minutes after 8:20. Fittingly, exactly zero people will be focused on the men in the white jerseys. No, it's all about Peyton and his comeback, right? Well, that's just the way we like it in Pittsburgh, baby. I can't wait.

(Think I'm excited for the season?) :tt04:

Usually ranked as the most widely read sports columnist in in America who has been with ESPN.com for around 10 years - probably the first major sports columnist to break out on the Internet rather than through print - also wrote #1 NYT bestseller The Book of Basketball - he is a writer and does PTI TV talking head type stuff given his popularity/clout at ESPN

He was a big factor in pushing ESPN to get into more sports documentaries by pushing the 30 for 30 series, and is successful enough that ESPN.com opened up Grantland on ESPN.com to encourage him to sign a new contract (the articles on the site often are very good) http://www.grantland.com/

Damn, I don't know how I have never heard of him before. Either way, 6-10 sounds ridiculous. I suppose if injuries continue at the current pace then we would be playing mostly 2nd stringers towards the end of the season, and if Ben leaves us for a game when we are playing a good team then that is going to be a loss, but that's all pretty hypothetical. 10-6 is the minimum this year IMO.

6-10 is crazy. I'd love to hear how he came up with that prediction unless he predicts Ben will go down with an injury early in the season. Since Ben was drafted, our worst season was 8-8... That was the 2006 season, dealing with the Super Bowl hangover. Cowher had one foot already out the door. Ben nearly died in the offseason, started the season with an emergency appendectomy, and was concussed midway through the season. That season was a train wreck.

This is essentially the same team as last year. We were in the driver's seat for the #1 seed until Ben had his knee rolled up on, and the wheels just fell off from there. For a team that has been as consistent as the Steelers over the past decade, I don't know how you can see 6-10 following back-to-back 12-4 seasons.

a win in Denver will shut a LOT of people up

apparently whoever we play has
-more motivation to play well
-the ability to overcome any injury
-the players to expose our "weaknesses"

Good synopsis. I like Simmons and follow him on Twitter and read his blog. Keep in mind he is a Boston guy and it doesnt suprise me that he is taking a flyer with a pick like this.

Steeler fans need to learn to not be so sensitive. For a fan base that professes to love tough hard-nosed football.......there are a lot of thin skinned fans that overreact to a column.

It's the same old crap as every year. The Ravens will win the division and probably make it to the Super Bowl despite a shaky Oline, loss of Suggs, and geriatrics Lewis and Reed. Brady and Hoody will go undefeated. Peyton Manning will be his old self right off the bat despite the fact he hasn't played for over a year. Green Bay will sail through the season unscathed. The 5 teams with the rookie QBs will all be better than the Steelers. Sanchez and Tebow will magically get better once the season starts and kick everyone's butts.

The Steelers are old and slow and have no Oline. Despite the fact it has been that way for years and we have made it to the Super Bowl in two of those years and have been .500 and above in every season, they still get no respect. I love it. Especially when they shove it back down their throats. The Steelers are most dangerous when they get no respect. It seems every time the "EXPERTS" pick the Steelers to win, they flounder.

Funny thing about this season though is this, IMO, our O Line is better. We have upgrades at LT and LG, Pouncey is the best center in the NFL, and Gilbert will be better at RT. We are younger and faster in the offensive skill positions and because of injury swe are younger at OLB and our CB's are relatively young, and have speed.
I for one am looking forward to the season and expect our offense to jell mid season and we will be a force come playoff time. Stairway to 7 begins in Denver!!!

I can see 6-10. We got nothing from the draft this year. The o line therefore is not improved. We have the same QB who forces balls into coverage, holds onto the ball too long, and makes boneheaded mistakes. The rest of the league has seen over and over teams going into no huddle and exposing our corners and scheme. You can't win every year anyway. Hopefully, these two young linemen can get healthy and better and with high picks in next year's draft we can reload. Troy, Timmons, Woodley, Hampton all look like they have gained a few pounds and lost their quickness. Harrison is getting up there with age and getting injured. Not a single defensive back is any good and only Ike could be a #2 for pretty much any other team. Let's face reality, this isn't getting any better. Tell me how things are looking up and maybe I could be convinced but our window has closed. We did well in that window and that's great. It's time to hopefully reload for the next ten years. We aren't going to win more than we lose this year. I am sure I am just a 'fair weather fan" though. Despite watching them every week, rooting them on, if I don't agree with fanboys that everything is great I am less than a fan. So sad these boards are full of you sheeple.

You may be able to argue Tennessee or Bengals but I don't see us beating anyone in the NFC East. Suppose I am wrong on a couple of these and we are still .500.

I get the visceral reaction to a fellow Steeler fan thinking they will do poorly this year but c'mon man. The NFC East is the hardest division in football. Those teams are pretty strong in almost every aspect. Our line against their D Lines is a no contest. Our secondary against their QB and receivers is a no contest. Those teams are all at their peaks or heading there. We are in a decline. I know you and most can't see that based on our record last year but we lost to most good teams. Like I said in another post, if by next year our two linemen get healthy and improve enough to be above average starters, that would give us a much improved line. That in turn would give Ben the added time he needs to process the info he is slow in seeing. If we can manage to draft a shutdown corner and starter at tackle and future developmental safety to take over for Clark or Troy, we could be right back in the mix. I think the young players on this team who have been slow in developing could use a little tough love that only comes from losing and seeing your crappy tape run in front of your teammates.

Just because people believe Ben is overrated and we are looking at a mediocre season doesn't mean they don't bleed black and gold. I am just not a blind fanboy who swallows up the b.s. that is being presented to us.

Jets (+5.5) over STEELERS

I think the Jets win this game outright. All the preseason scorn and ridicule inadvertently pushed them into "Nobody Believes In Us" mode, right?

Perhaps a Steelers fan that doesn't let his team loyalty get in the way of rational thought. I'd rather see critical posts than bunch of hoopla about how the Steelers are the best team in the league. There's nothing wrong with an expert predicting the Steelers go 6-10. There are a lot of experts with a lot of opinions. Some of you act like he disrespected your mother or something or has something personal against the Steelers.

Well stated.

I am as diehard as anyone. This year has me worried. When is the last time the Steelers truly went out and took care of business? Close games with the Browns and Bengals seem to be the norm when by all accounts we should be riding over them like speed bumps on the way to the playoffs. I this year could be the year we scrape out bottoms going over those speed bumps.

I say that with no thought as to what the talking heads say. That is simply based on my observations.

okay, because you said so...sorry I don't get super excited when we are an average team at best. Sure, we beat a Revis less Jets team with I would say the worst offense in the league. I wasn't impressed. We aren't a super bowl contender. Unless we are, I don't get excited, unless we are really bad and can look forward to high draft picks. Nothing has changed for me after this game. We can barely run the ball, against any decent QB our D is suspect and our line is still a sieve. Do you truly believe we have the talent to win a SB this year? Last time I felt that way was going against Arizona is the SB and even then I had my doubts. We lucked out in that game against easily top 5 worst SB teams ever we needed a miracle at the end to win. So I repeat, I don't think we are very good. I don't see us making the playoffs. I still watch the games and hope I am wrong but seasons without a SB chance are meaningless. I treat seasons like this as a way to judge the talent on the team and see where we need to make improvements in the draft with our high pick. If we sneak into the playoffs, and I don't see it, then obviously anything can happen and I will stand corrected and we can revisit these posts and I will happily stop posting here. If we don't will you stop posting here?

did you notice the 10 minute drive in the 4th quarter, capped off by a TD? You have to feel at least a LITTLE bit better. The Patriots and Ravens both showed they are beatable today - as frustrating as last week was, I thought they took a small step in the right direction today, on both sides of the ball . . .

To supplement my earlier post on Simmons, he has some good NFL insights and admits that betting adds to how you can analyze the game - Simmons (who used to be a writer for Jimmy Kimmel) and Kimmel's "Cousin Sal" have a weekly podcast where they predict the lines for the coming week.

Some interesting points in the link to this week's podcast
