WTF? Heath Ledger as the Joker? Bad, bad move in my opinion. That's like putting Napolean Dynomite in a mafia movie or making George Clooney batman....oh, wait...nevermind....

Jack Nicholson, we miss you.

Heath Ledger to Play the Joker
Tuesday, August 01, 2006
By Sara Stewart

I wish I could quit you, Batman.

"Brokeback Mountain" star Heath Ledger will swap his spurs and saddle for whiteface and a twisted leer to play Batman arch villain the Joker, Warner Bros. announced Monday.

The sequel to last year's "Batman Begins" will be titled "The Dark Knight," and is slated to go into production early next year, the studio said.

In addition to Ledger, the film will reportedly see the return of Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, Michael Caine as Alfred the butler and Gary Oldman as Lt. James Gordon.

Internet speculation has run wild over the past year on the subject of what director Christopher Nolan will do to follow up his first "Batman," said by many critics to be the best of the Batman films.

In addition to the Joker, there could be another casting announcement on the horizon: The Batman fan site batman-on-film.com mentions Philip Seymour Hoffman may be in talks to play the Penguin.

Matt Damon wouldn't be so bad.

I wouldn't mind seeing Edward Norton play the part.

Anybody but Heath Ledger. He has the big grin already, but I just can't see him playing the part of a villian. Plus I'm not a big fan of his acting abilities to begin with.

I think that you guys are forgetting that Heath Ledger is playing the Joker, not necessarily Jack Nicholson's Joker. This is Christopher Nolan's Batman, and like Batman Begins, it will be a much darker film, and I think that Ledger will do a great job as that darker Joker.

I'm well aware of the fact that Jack Nicholson is not playing the joker. But don't you think they could find somebody better than Heath Ledger? I mean really. Heath Ledger? I guess he reaches out to the female/teenager audience. It's just sad that they are ruining the Batman series in the process.

Ruining the Batman series? Ledger is going to deliver. He was excellent in Lords of Dogtown, and that's not exactly for your female/teenager audience. He has more acting chops than most people give him credit for.

Look. I agree it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it seem.

But it's still a bad Superman movie. If you wanna make a Super Man movie, he can't leave that destruction in his wake and it shouldn't be so bleak. And the whole relationship with his father was by far the worst part.

Not sure there was a "Earthlings only" clause with Nietzsche's philosophy...

The premise is about a man rising above his restrictions and previous (usually oppressive) societal values to become the moral superior and "grant" this superiority to the society around him.

There is nothing about Clark in that description. He's an alien who can't be stopped, barring intervention with the dreaded deus ex machina rocks.

The entire reason the ‹bermensch was created was to show the distinction of your average, every day man living a human life, rising above the "godly" power of religion to invoke stronger societal values.

Exactly. The only interesting thing about most Superman comics is that, in realistic terms, Lex is the ‹bermensch and Clark is the tyrannical "god" (in other words, powerful, completely inhuman being) that believes his morality to be the only way.

Though, very few writers ever undertake this challenge/point of view.

You don't seem to understand the premise of Superman. :shake02:

No, Superman himself is not the Ubermensch, but the Superman mythos is loaded with Nietzschean subtext. Specifically, the relationship between Clark and Lex Luthor. Lex believes the Superman ideal to be dangerous and stunting humanity's growth, but he's not the Ubermensch either because every time he has a chance to operate with Superman out of the way, all he achieves is his own power.

Once again, instead of being a smartass, I suggest you take a deeper look at what I was saying.

I'm not approaching it from a comics standpoint at all. I'm approaching it from the standpoint of Nietzche's philosophy applied the situation without a writer's (who created the character as the can-do-no-wrong, impossibly perfect character for feel-good stories and little else) interference.

Lex is an asshole, but he's an asshole trying to eradicate something (from an outside point of view) inhuman morality on humans. He gets there, and gets caught up in his power, which further proves the ‹bermensch to be nothing more than an ideal, and not as possibility.

From the inside, Clark is clearly ideal. From the "real world" takes on translated ideas, Clark would resemble God while Lex would resemble the ‹bermensch. The ‹bermensch who, like any actual humans of that power would, fails when it is all said and done.
