Just saw Ben on Pittsburgh Sports Tonight talking about the Revolution helmet he will be wearing this year and how he dosent like it as much as he has to "look" through the helmet/mask more than the original..says it is harder to see the peripheral...I would think this is something he will get used to..hopefully..

yeah he is wearing the old one, not sure why, i have worn a revolution and the visibility is not that different from the orginial riddell. and it feels like your not wearing a helmet at all.

Post-Gazette says due to the new helmet imparing his vision that Ben will go with the old helmet:

Despite the number of broken bones in his face -- upper and lower jaw, nose and orbital -- Roethlisberger is going to wear the same helmet he wore last season. He experimented with several other helmets, including the Revolution model, which fits lower around the jaw and is designed to protect against concussions. But the helmet, which is worn by a lot of linemen and linebackers, hindered his vision.

"I'll take the chance," Roethlisberger said. "I don't hear about too many football players breaking their jaw, so I'll take a chance my helmet will be good."

Said Cowher about the helmet: "If he's happy, I'm happy."

Wear whatever makes you comfortable. What's the big deal? It's a helmet.

Hmmm. Don't know if that is such a good idea coming OFF a broken jaw that required extensive surgery and the insertion of a titanium plate not even 8 weeks ago. One hard uppercut to that jaw (as defensive players sometimes do when coming in on the QB) and the jaw could be re-fractured. He needs to protect that face and jaw at all costs, imho.

Ben needs to wear what Ben's comfortable with...if he says it impairs his vision...then it impairs his vision...

I kinda like this....he's not all "Oh my God..I have to change..I have to do this or that!!"...he's still being Ben...and God bless him for it....

Well, the big deal is his face got smashed and, having received a concussion, he apparently will now be more susceptible to future concussions.

With Merrill Hoge and Troy Aikman having retired due to problems with recurring concussions, the old school approach that you "wait for the cobwebs to clear out" after "having your bell rung" is no longer seen as the proper way to address these problems.

Adapting equipment to changing medical realities is part of the game - leather helmets without face masks probably are more comfortable and provide a greater field of vision, but I do not recall seeing anyone wearing those helmets in the last 50 years.

Ben needs to be able to play the game but also needs to put himself in the best position to play it for a long time. What he wears is his call, but IMO this is avery big deal to be resolved.

Eitherway the kid is going to wear whatever helmet he feels comfortable with. He doesn't seem very concerned about a facial injury (broken jaw) and I don't exactly see the Steelers training staff voicing their opinions or concerns on what type of helmet he should or shouldn't wear. So, sport whatever makes you comfortable.

I'm sure that Cowher and Co have looked at the advantages and disadvantages of the helmets along with Ben and his doctors, and I'll bet even his Mom! I'm sure he's gotten the advise on how to best protect himself AND be comfortable...I can't imagine that he wouldn't follow it now.

While I agree here that this is ultimately his decision, I would think after all he has been through, he'd rather be safe than sorry. He threw caution to the wind once before and it came around to bite him in the behind. I'm just going to have to trust his judgment here and hope he doesn't get an uppercut to the jaw by an overzealous defender.

You would think that not feeling like your wearing a helmet would be a plus for Ben. Also from everything I have heard his jaw is supposed to be stronger now, so I'm sure he can take an upper cut to the Jaw. He's a Big Boy!

I would have to say wear what he feels comfortable with. Believe BEN is still BEN, He aint going to change for anybody. That is what makes him special...If he says he cants see I dont want him throwing to the defender instead of our targets becuase he didn't see them...His line will do a great job of protecting him...
