It’s been an up-and-down year for Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall. He started the year off with a torn ACL from the previous season. Then he came back and scored a TD in his first game back. Yay! In the next week or so, he busted up his Achilles. Not so good.

But, he’s getting better news now. According to several reports, Mendenhall will start on Sunday night vs. the Baltimore Ravens.

“Isaac Redman said it looks like Rashard Mendenhall will start at running back against Ravens,” tweets Gerry Dulac.

Am I the only one who doesn't like this?

Now we have a QB AND an RB who's rusty as hell, and a freaking beast in Redman riding the bench...

I have a bad feeling about this...

Key phrase here is "riding the bench". Its not like he can't come into the game at any moment.

the injury situation is really wearing on me - a victory on SNF without Ben would really make my week next week, and would really knock the Ravens down a few pegs

Don't know how I feel about this. Not when we have Reggie Noble and Mini Bus licking their chops on the sideline. I think we can play smash mouth with this Raven team and tge other 2 backs are best suited imo. Hope I'm wrong, but we will see.

I'm happy with this. The O-line is opening holes & Mendy is hungry!!!

Mendy has A LOT to prove.

Let's hope he does.

Good news on the injury front? Holy shit, it's about time.

I think you guys are forgetting that Mendenhall is playing for a contract, so he'll have to come out and play lights out. This means running at a defense that is struggling mightily and taking advantage of an ailing front 7. If Mendenhall can run effectively, it could potentially be a long day for this Ravens defense.

One thing you have to think about with Ben being out, no matter who is the running back for the week, either Mendy, Redman or Dwyer, the defense will be stacking the line against the run. Other teams will not fear our passing game without Ben. I expect tons of run blitzs in the gaps to shut down the run and then turn that into pressure on Lefty on the play action fakes. Unless we can hit a few early passes to make the Ravens respect the threat of a pass, I am looking for it to be a long day. I hope to hell I am wrong, but I don't have a good feeling about this game at all now with Ben out, no matter who is the running back.

were they the best option last week ? were they in beast mode when they put up 77 whopping yds on 27 carries ? or could it be the guys doing the blocking sucked last week , so no matter who got the ball they were screwed ? :tap:

Dwyer and Redman had a lot of yards after contact in their big games, so that suggests that the line's blocking wasn't perhaps quite as dominating as one might think during that three-game stretch. But hopefully the Ravens will continue to struggle in run defense. Particularly with Haloti Ngata banged up. He didn't even play last week despite dressing.

The problem is that we can never truly know what the outcome would have been with a different back.

But in my humble opinion, Redman does the best when there's nothing available, with Dwyer second. Mendenhall absolutely needs a hole because he's indecisive and unwilling to just get physical. He doesn't do very well until he has open space, but then he's great, especially when he holds onto the ball.

Unfortunately, our OL just isn't that good, although it's improving. Holes are hard to come by. There's also the possibility that Mendenhall could be our best receiving back, but that's pure speculation given his unfortunate injuries after Haley's arrival. And would he hold onto the ball?

For now, Mendenhall is our third back - at least in my book. I consider that #1 pick to be a bust. Expectations were a lot higher.

Good, that's what we want. LET THEM. Let them disrespect a big-armed QB that won't be shy to take advantage against a banged up secondary with one of the fastest men in football lined up on the outsides.

Leftwhich has played in games for us before and virtually almost every one of them, he has connected on a deep ball. He took a shot again last week against KC in his first series & I expect Haley to dial more up tonight.

Lefty has a big arm. I think everybody and their mother is expecting Balty to stack the line and dare us to pass, which is why I think Lefty is the better and correct option over Batch. He can simply push the ball downfield with ease and is our best home-run QB at the moment. The long-ball will be there. It's up to Wallace & Sanders to beat the coverage.

anyone else expect Heath to get some in the middle of the field? I can see some 15-20 yd connections

Something strange tonight is going to happen. Whether it be a trick play or flea-flicker, who knows but Heath may be involved. As long as we prevent that CHUMP Harbaugh to try his fake-FG bullshit, we'll be pulling stuff of our own.

Yes, we passed on Rice but the Cowboys took Jones over Mendenhall so who is teh clear winner? Rice is the best of the 3 but I think we did better than Dallas. So? Go Steelers!!!!!!!!!
