I'm excited about todays game. i want to see how big ben looks. also want to see what santonio holmes can do. i also would like to see if omar jabos can lead the offense, charlie batch is an ok back up, but depth is always good.

I don't think they are playing the game down here in Florida, & it just ruined my entire day.
It just friggin pisses me off that they played the Patriots game, & of course they had to play the Colts game. Media darlings & golden friggin gods of football that they are, they must be way more important than our World Champs. Makes me sick.

Still there not playing CRISP at allthey were crisp on the 1st drive with all the starters. hines makes the catch that went down for bens only incompletion. the steelers score. we cant expect our whole team of back ups led by shayne boyd to go out and play like the defending sb champs.

is it worth injury to one of our starters to beat the cards?

I wouldn't say it sucked. The pass defense was bad, but beyond that I felt there were things that we could build off of. Ben looked fine, Haynes had a nice run (the only time he touched the ball), and the run defense shut down on of the best backs in the league. I remember this time last season I was worried about our secondary, I always am. The truth is that they aren't that good. Our pass rush makes them look much better than they really are. As long as we have a pass rush, we'll be fine (and once Joey Porter is back, we will have a much stronger pass rush).

:sofunny: About the time they got a new stadium and a star running back.

Overall I think we look pretty good. Our 2nd string D couldn't stop their first team O, but that's really no surprise. Boyd looked pretty good, but he struggled with being consistent. I saw the same thing from him in Europe. Our secondary did look a little sluggish, but I think that was the type of D we ran as much as anything. Man coverage is tough when they only need around 10 yards. I think it was the LeBeau's way of throwing our DB's into the fire right away.

I just EXPLAINED to you how I can say they didn't suck.
Our secondary WAS never overly impressive. That didn't stop us from winning a Super Bowl.
It was our pass rush that made OUR secondary look good, and once Joey is back, we'll look fine again.

good opening drive by the black and gold, I'm happy to see Ben in good shape. he was sacked/hit but it's out of the way so any fears that might have been lingering in the back of his mind about getting hit. I was impressed by Keisel, can't wait to see more of him this season

Midnightwriter07
08-12-2006, 05:33 PM
I wouldn't say it sucked. The pass defense was bad, but beyond that I felt there were things that we could build off of. Ben looked fine, Haynes had a nice run (the only time he touched the ball), and the run defense shut down on of the best backs in the league. I remember this time last season I was worried about our secondary, I always am. The truth is that they aren't that good. Our pass rush makes them look much better than they really are. As long as we have a pass rush, we'll be fine (and once Joey Porter is back, we will have a much stronger pass rush).

Regardless if people (Steelers fans) want to admit it or not, our secondaryalways bothers me too because i feel is way overrated. Our D line and linebackers looked good.. but the seconday always worries me... but is good to see the problems now early on so they can be worked on. The Cardinals are a decent offensive team and we prety much shut the run down well so we look goof upfront and in the middle.

I am glad to see Taylor is making his case for his 10 million signing bonus ( eyeroll )

I agree with most, the secondary isn't the greatest.

However, when Joey comes back in, that pash rush we lack right now will be back in full force and will things will get better.

When they got a new stadium :hunch:

Anyone that is watching the game on NFL Network had to have seen the clip where they claimed the Cards had the best fans in the NFL :sofunny:

I saw that. I'm still laughing over it. The NFL Network is just showing the local broadcast from Arizona. You would never see something like that on a national broadcast. The analysts are wearing Cardinals shirts, so it's safe to say they'll be pointing out all the good things Arizona does, and all the bad things we do.

First thought: This Arizona team has not sold out a game in 6 years.

Second though: They played their first team for a quarter and a half.

Now, I'm not a Haynes fan, but I thought he held up nice on the screne pass.

Keisel, nice tackle for loss and then turned around on 2nd down and made another tackle.

Morgan has to pull those balls in. That pass was perfectly placed.

Holmes looked very solid in my opinion. Watch out though, he might be the next "Plax 2.0"....

Staley looked good when he actually had an opening.

Colon blew coverage and ended up in a loss of yardage but bounced back and made a nice tackle on the next play.

Boyd (penalty or not) threw a horrible ball on that called-back INT. Horrible judgement.

For the most part and most importantly in my opinion, our defense on 3rd downs has looked pretty bad.

They were my sleeper hit last season in my Picks league, just because of Fitz and Boldin. With Edge, they will make some defensive coordinators lose some sleep over in the NFC this season. I've always liked Fitz since he was at Pitt.

Thx for the info on the kickoffs. They both have speed, so I'm hoping we get a viable return threat out of one of them. El made a lot of games a lot more comfortable last year with big returns.

Better now then in September to have a loss. But a good finish by the Steelers.

Boyd is reminding me too much of Kordell... He's ran the ball an aweful lot. Cowher didn't look to happy on some of those qb run plays.

Haynes has has been impressive. Duce needs to make some quick improvements, since his performance wasn't too impressive. I'm going to keep my eye on the wideout Reid.

i'll have to watch another pre-season game or two to get a better feel for these new guys.

So far, so good on the injury front.............

Injury report

Cowher said the Steelers came through the first game without any injuries. Among the Steelers who did not dress were three starters: wide receiver Hines Ward (hamstring), linebacker Joey Porter (knee) and tight end Jerame Tuman (hamstring). The others were wide receiver Isaac West (knee), fullback Branden Joe (hamstring), center Chukky Okobi (neck) and offensive tackle Trai Essex (knee).

Cowher unhappy

Cowher was not happy with the blocking, particularly by his second team.

"There was a lot of [mental errors] we had, particularly in the running game. That second group, we had a lot of guys coming free. You have to sit down and look at it. We did not game plan, but that's no excuse. Just going out there and running basic plays, we should be able to execute."

The Steelers rushed for only 72 yards on 23 carries (3.1 per carry). Boyd led them with four scrambles for 16 yards.

Rookie halfback Cedric Humes, though, turned a screen pass from Omar Jacobs into a 33-yard gain to the 2 that set up Jacobs' 1-yard loping pass to tight end Isaac Smolko on third down with 1:25 left. On the previous play, Humes ran up the middle from the 1 and fumbled into the end zone. Teammate Willie Colon recovered, putting the ball back on the 1. - PPG

Well, now that it's morning and I can actually sit back and digest this game fully.......a few thoughts and opinions. Keep in mind, my expressed opinions do not mean that I feel the team is doomed and that I'm ready to take the Clemente bridge after one preseason game; just a few observations.....

I thought Jacobs had great touch on the ball. Seems to have some innate sense in the pass game. Not so for Boyd, who seems to have a lot of Kordell in him. Contrary to what i'd read, he does have a strong arm but no array of passes at all. Zips it, but that's it. Charged with 1 INT, threw another (H1: Shazor, when Reid had him beat) and spit the ball up once too. You cannot win with that.

I'm not on the Anthony Smith bandwagon, not yet. He does play with great anticipation, which is good. One example when he blew up a receiver on a little screen, or hitch (forgot which). Another, the 2nd INT but at the same time, reading John Navarre is like reading the big E on the eyechart. There may not be a worse QB in football. On the downside, Smith got dragged 5 yards on one run, looked awful on Shipp's play too: arriving completely out of control, got juked and didn't even strip the blockers. Good football sense, questionable speed and poor tackling. I have no doubt he will learn over time though.

Holmes belongs, Reid will compete. Colon was outclassed in the first half. Harris was outclassed in the second half; gave no effort v. the run and consistently was the last man off the snap. Marvin Phillips has great feet, can turn a guy and, mainly, does manage to keep in front of him but man he's small, as NFL OC go; constantly looked like he was about to slip off his block, but rarely did. Humes was smaller than i thought, slow feet too. Vickers hustles, but he's high cut, struggled to anchor v. the run, rarely did; i don't think he's a DE. Smolko made a veteram move getting his feet down on the TD. So so blocking tho; still, moves ahead of Davis and Dekker in my book. Davis blew chunks blocking, showed alertness recovering Boyd's fumble.

Nete Washington was not good. Aside from his failure to locate Batch's ball in the EZ, looked to me that he was intimidated, gave shitty effort blocking a couple times. Hopefully he looks better in the next three games.

On the plus side, no one got hurt and it's only preseason. Just my two cents.

Great post-game analysis, 83. I can't say that I disagree with too much.

I was quite impressed with Santonio Holmes all the way around. I also felt that Anthony Smith played a pretty solid game and his alertness on that second pick was outstanding! I also thought that Omar Jacobs had a pretty good outing and he throws a nice ball and put it right where it needed to be on that last TD by Smolko. Kudus to Smolko for heads up play in bringing those feet down and the nifty toe move. I thought Batch played pretty well (did I say that - LOL!) and Ben looked like, well - - -Ben! I was a little concerned about the first-team running game, but as you said above, it is the preseason. I thought Duce looked pretty slow, but I'll cut him some slack as he hasn't played much in the last two years. I was not impressed at all with Boyd - he did indeed remind me of Kordell and seemed to have a little bit of happy feet going on and he needs to learn to back off on the velocity of his passes. All in all, I wasn't too disappointed as it was their first outing against a pretty good Cards' defense. They've got some work to do this week and I'm sure Cowher, Wiz and LeBeau will have them ready for battle next week against the purple people eaters!

I agreed with all of your post, save this portion. I felt Smith did rather well out there, not only on the anticipation side, but also the tackling. I haven't heard much about his speed, but I have always felt that a nose for the football and anticipation will always make up for a lack of speed. I was impressed with his ability to come up on the run and make a play though. He was able to stop Shipp from gaining the first down on 3rd and 3 (which is impressive coming all the way out from the safety position), and the play you mentioned where he hit the receiver 5 yards in the backfield on a screen. I felt he was the highlight of the day yesterday, and while I'm not sold on him yet (for the simple fact he did it against 2nd and 3rd string players, and it was only one pre-season game), but I do think he should be starting in the near future.

I think we're talking about 2 different plays to Shipp. The one i mentioned came at about 1:27 to go in Q2, 12 yards first down. I can't collect the one you mentioned, tho i don't doubt it happened.

On the 2nd INT, fully gift wrapped:

Navarre got the snap and his rolled his eyes left. From the FS POV, that says the WR to that side was the primary target.

Navarre's eyes came back to center, briefly; then he turned his head left. From the FS POV, that says he's locked one. BTW, my TV showed just one receiver to that side.

Navarre pump faked, a move ordinarily intended to misdirect the FS, sending him in that direction with the ball to go elsewhere. It's doubtful he was faking McFadden because, more than likely, McFadden had already flipped and was running with the WR, with his back to the QB. In other words, Navarre sent Smith to the play.

McFadden was beat by a step or so but had fairly good inside position. To complete the pass, Navarre had to put some touch on the ball; drop it over the CB in other words. That's the ball he threw, giving Smith plenty of time to get there.

In sum: he showed Smith where he was going, confirmed that, and gave him all the time in the world to make the play.

Look, i'm not throwing Tony overboard. He made the play a FS in Cover 2 is supposed to make. Good, but that doesn't tell me he has the range to play single high. If he does not, so much the worse, since LeBeau won't be so able to move Polamalu.

What he showed was as expected, excellent anticipation and football smarts. Playing speed remains to be confirmed (his track speed is poor, but that's now off point). Playing strength: he blew up a guy who had no momentum (back turned, not moving). That's an anticipation play, imo. In force, he got drug a couple times, which is not encouraging.

Still, Smith was a helluvalot more impressive than Clark, who looked bad unfortunately, or Carter, who showed he's in-the-box only in the base (where he's not needed); on this team, with TP, he is strictly a dime S. Not an option at free, as is so for Logan.

I must have missed the play you were referring to also. I was trying to go from computer to TV a couple of times, and missed a few plays here and there. That one must have been on of them.

So he did what he was supposed to in his position. That's all we can really ask for IMO, especially from a rookie in his first live NFL game. I'd like to see what he can do as a starter. Put him out there with Troy, see how they fit together, and see what Smith can do against some actual competition. I really didn't see anything that would lead me to believe that he didn't have enough range to do what we needed him to do, but I felt his tackles and interception (minus the gimmie) are good indications that he will be able to.

Once again, I'm not putting the kid down. I just feel he still has a good bit to prove to me before I'm willing to jump on the wagon and start calling for him as our starter; I'd rather sit back for the next three games and see how Clark steps up after a poor showing.

I tend to agree. I'm not one to sell on someone after one performance, I'd just like to see what he can do for us as a starter, and what better time to do it than a game that doesn't matter? I think you and I are essentially on the same page with him and the entire safety situation, we just differ in feelings of how impressive Smith was.
