I was at the game this Sunday... so dissapointed at the end, and an emotional rollercoaster throughout the game, fighting off ridiculously uneducated cowboy fans (you can imagine) through the whole game.

I didnt really get a good chance to pay close attention to DD and Beachum.

Can you guys give your output as to how they played this game? Considering DD's first game back after thinking he was done for the season a few months back, and Beachum wasnt even supposed to start this year.

Two rookies on the right side, I thought they did ok, although I saw DD get pushed into the backfield a few times. He didn't look too fast on those huge screens at cowboys stadium either.

Thoughts?

still a little green. one of the back to back sacks that happened in the 4th quarter drive was on him

For the most part he had a good game. There were times - like what Fire Arians said on the last drive where he gave up the sack - where the rookie inside him came out a little bit, but he was solid for most of the game. Beachum didn't make any glaring mistakes and is slowly but surely making a case for him to stay at RT.

All in all, a good game for the two youngins.

I saw one play were the defense was just sbout to hit Ben and DeCastro came out of nowere and saved Ben's ass. He just clobbered the DE.

That's good to hear.

I really do like Beachum, reason being, he is not getting beat constantly like Adams or Gilbert were earlier in the year. In fact, people dont mention him much. Butt that's a good thing if you're an offensive lineman. It means you're not screwing up. Im exited to see him solidify his role on the right side. Maybe adams or gilbert can take over the leftside if they play better once Starks retires.

As far as DD, I'm glad he is playing again and survived his first game back, 'in a hostile environment' as Tomlin would say.

Serious question...
Would we rather see Starks/Gilbert on the ends, Starks/Adams, Starks/Beachum, Gilbert/Adams, Gilbert/Beachum, or Adams/Beachum?

I really don't know. I think Starks is very underrated, I think Gilbert is kind of overrated but that doesn't necessarily mean I am right or that the Steelers agree. Not sure what to really think of Adams and Beachum yet.

DeCastro gave up two big sacks...but held his own. Once his mind adjusts he's going to be a big + for the OL

He also cleared the way for a Dwyer short yardage TD....something that we've desperately needed for years

Im really sad we won't get to see our buster unit of

Colon-Pouncey-DeCastro

this season

• Right guard David DeCastro , making his NFL starting debut, and right tackle Kelvin Beachum were praised for holding up well in the first game they played alongside each other. “That‘s what‘s disappointing to me, to let guys down that played so well,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.

IMO the future of our O-line looks very bright (if they stay healthy)...Just need to hold our own till these guys really turn into top notch NFL pro football players....And that only comes with time and games played for experience.

Thought they played extremely well. DD is going to be a beast if he can stay healthy.

I really don't know. I think Starks is very underrated, I think Gilbert is kind of overrated but that doesn't necessarily mean I am right or that the Steelers agree. Not sure what to really think of Adams and Beachum yet.

That's the question, for sure. We know what Starks brings to the table - he's adequate to play the position, a journeyman-level NFL OT and nothing more; but on our O-line that makes him the best OT.

Adams would have reasonably been expected to take the starting left tackle position, but he's had technique problems in pass blocking, followed by injuries, and he simply hasn't progressed. He's fine as a run blocker. He needs more time, health, training and experience. So Adams is still an open question, but injuries are injuries, and we can remain hopeful.

Gilbert would have been reasonably expected to continue developing after his solid rookie year, but instead he regressed badly. His pass defense is worse than Adams. Not only has he been regularly beaten, he's losing on technique and he's losing physically. Indeed, defensive players have been driving him into the turf, and into other teammates. He's being beaten like a bongo drum. He's nowhere near Adams in run blocking. Gilbert is a big concern.

Beachum is a big surprise. In preseason, all he seemed to do was hold; he looked kind of helpless. But in the last two games as a starter, he's looked better than either Adams or Gilbert in pass defense (and behind Adams in run blocking, of course).

We really need at least one of these guys to step up and get beyond the Starks level, and it really should be two - because honestly, we're a bottom five OL, and it should be an achievable goal. Maybe one will be Beachum, and maybe Adams will progress or Gilbert will get his head right. Maybe both!!! Or maybe neither ...

I don't think we're going to know the answer this year.

PS: I was very happy with DD's play.

While Beachum is doing ok in pass protect, he is a little light in the britches against 3-4 DTs with run blocking. Specificaly , he has trouble with down blocks. Maybe if he can put on another 10-15 lbs above the waist this offseason, he could very well nail that spot down for the next 10 years.....

As for Decastro, if he stays healthy, could be one of the best guards we've had since Gerry Mullins.....and that includes Big Red. I thought it was a solid debut.

I can't wait to see how well our running game could be with Colon, Pouncey and DeCastro in the middle.

Really, Starks is average? We havent had to worry about LT since he returned. He is as good as any in the league right now and rarely gives up a sack from the left. Starks needs a new contract period. I would say hes our best OL behind Pouncey. DD will hopefully improve and lock down the RG spot.

Starks is a top 5 Steelers lineman of past decade IMO

1. Hartings
2. Faneca
3. Smith
4. Starks
5. Pouncey

This right here..

Max Starks is really underrated. You dont see these forums blowing up with Max Starks sucks! or Fire Max Starks! and thats because he is SOLID.

People forget he played all season the two years we won the superbowl, got to a third one also. and he didnt start or play the years we sucked.

What is he like 30 yrs old? or older? Maybe he will stick around for another few years.

Starks is a UFA, and will surely test the market. I would veture a guess he will get a better offer elsewhere., and rate his return in 2013 at about 10%. The same with Mendenhal, Wallace, and possibly Foster. Legs will be retained as a swing man.

Next years Startin Oline, Gilbert, Colon ( until he gets hurt then Legursky steps in) Pouncey, DeCastro, and Adams. Beachum will be the swing man.

Now is the time to start looking for some hard ass coaches & trainers.

Amen on the trainers..... Hear that Mr. Colon?? Lugging that extra 40-50 lbs around isn't exactly good for your health. Same could be said for Woodley, & Hampton. Have you guys ever heard of sensible eating?

As for injuries, this has been going on for a number of years, like since 1933...... Losing Kugler is going to hurt. The guy was a wiz at getting guys ready in a hurry.

Starks has been the most underrated Steeler over the past decade.

Hawaii 5-0

• Right guard David DeCastro got a lot of action in his first NFL start as he set up in pass protection on 45 of 62 snaps in Dallas. He didn‘t miss an offensive snap. DeCastro and right tackle Kelvin Beachum formed the right side of the offensive line despite having only two prior NFL starts between them, both by Beachum. “Both are sharp, intelligent young men that did a nice job of communicating,” coach Mike Tomlin said.

This. Take Mike's money, and ask Brown to restructure a little to keep him. Hell - might not need to do the second part with all the fat, obese, overly-truffle-shuffled bodies we'll be unloading

Starks loves BB, and more importantly, BB loves Starks.

He is going nowhere.

He'll sing a two-year deal, for $10 million... with part of that ($2 million) coming from BB himself if need be.

BB & Starks have had lockers isde-by-side since they were rookies. BB & Starks have vacationed together. I repeat, BB won't let Starks slip away.

Indeed.

Dan Marino used to take his O-line out to dinner regularly... and bought them really nice Christmas gifts... you know... like Isotoners. :wink02:

If healthy, does Mike Adams start? Because, Beachum has played very well.

All they had to do is make through 4 Quarters without getting hurt. That's an improvement !

Great question.

But heres a better answer: IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT!

I honestly live by that philosophy.

With beachum playing solid, getting all the reps, and improving each game, i think adams should wait, until someone goes down (god forbid).

Agreed! I was scared Decastro would re-aggrivate something or get rolled on!

Thankfully they survived.
