View Full Version : How has Pittsbugh as a city felt?

This question goes out to all current Pittsburghers. I have lived in a couple of different pro sports cities during tough times for their teams but none have the "feeling" that Pittsburgh has after a loss or win. In my mind this makes Pittsburgh unique because it seems that western Pa is emotionally attached to its teams (especially the Steelers).I'm hoping for Steeler electricity!

Cannot speak for the city, but my uncle is so angered, that he is giving up his season seats after this season. Steelers need to be very worried about fan apathy if this continues.

few franchises have been named after the citizens of that city, and the industry that put the town on the map

couple this with the 'feel-good' story the team gave the city in it's darkest hours of the 1970's, winning
Championships and forging legends in the history of the game as the mills were shuttered
and unemployment was rampant, so you have a unique situation

"When you're in other organizations, you recognize that it's different and you respect it.

Until you are part of it, you have no idea of the depths.

It's generational, passed down from father to son.

I know the more I get to understand it, the more Steeler Nation drives me. I want to win for them because they are that special.''

I have a feeling many ticket holders are fed up and considering giving them up.

LOL.. For every fan that is willing to give up their seats, there are 100,000 fans out there willing to take their spot.

? Fed up with what? A losing season every now and again? I've lived here all my life and I've never known that to be true, not even in the 80s. We have 2 season tickets and the ONLY reason we do is they were passed to me from my father. We got them in 1996 and I will never give them up. They'll go to my kids and so on (I've already given my ticket to my son which was a sacrifice unlike any). If it weren't for my dad, I'd be on that waiting list forever like thousands of others. I would hope the fans would accept a bad season every once in a while and I know of no one fed up enough to get rid of anything.

What happened to my thread? No matter how much I may complain about this team I will be ready next August to watch the preseason and watch all season long. So where are the Pittsburghers at?

Hey !, if you mean "sports-wise", then
..., you Pittsburgh'ians should be god-awful proud and happy for your city/state.
Correct if I'm wrong, '08?, you were the City of Champions, Superbowl + Stanley Cup, the only thing you missed was the Baseball "Penant".
Again, correct if I'm wrong, but Detroit, in the 50's, I forget what year, was the only city/state to win all 3 in the same year/season.

Personally, I'd rather have a "consistent" National Leader-of-the-pack in even just 2, than have 3 and then "NUTHIN'" for the next contimuing 60 years or so. ...
So ya, bitch-away if we have to, but it's still "ALL GOOD" so far, in the bigger picture, excluding Mayan Xmas Calendar's, of course.
:)

I'm not from pittsburgh but from the times I've been to the city and games it seems that most fans are very knowledgeable about the team and players and that no matter the circumstances true fans always have faith that the black and gold will get the job done. And when they win the city wins

Those of us in western PA are understandably pissed with the way our team has played this season, but we still have hope. We know tomorrow's game is do or die for this season. It's pretty much the same feelings as every other Steelers fan has. Some are pessimistic, others optimistic. Geographic location really doesn't have anything to do with it. :tt:

The Steelers have a fantastic fan base and there is no way one down year is going to change that. I like to compare the Steelers to the Bengals except is the opposite. The Steelers will have a down season every once in a while and the Bengals are the opposite by having a good season every once in a while, lol.

Well, I'm hoping the Bengals have two good seasons in a row, you can never say the Steelers have two bad seasons in a row. I have heard the 80's weren't all that good for the Steelers, but I don't remember that.

Are there people who are pissed here and willing to rant about the Steelers whether you want them to or not? Of course. Are these same people going to be cheering like Ahrn City crazed maniacs at every game despite that (be it at the house, local bar, tailgate, or stadium)? Damn straight.

The attitude towards our team will always be fine. Die hard fans of this team (especially those in the city/western Pa area) have been through ups and downs with them already, and know how to handle it. It's a more loyal relationship than most marriages. :chuckle:

We're good though. You'll hear us rant on the radio or at the bar, or at our Uncle's place, but we're good.

The season ticket waiting list is up to 60,000 people. Your uncle lied to you. He didn't tell you how much money he lost on that trip to Vegas. Get a grip man.

Sure we get pissed off if we lose games, specially games you probably should win more than others. I've been just as mad as anyone else this season about our play, but each week I come back and stand behind my team n have confidence in them that they can win that week. I'm still confident we can make the playoffs and make it to the superbowl. I will never give up on any of the teams here, never have never will, lived here all my life and love having the teams we have (yes even the Pirates)

Regardless what the next fan from the burgh tells how bad they feel about the team after a bad week, they will be right back to the game or tv watching them cheering them on.

I don't get this thread!? I'm in California and have been bleeding black and gold for 35+ years, now 40! We have won 2 Superbowls as of recent, we have 6, more than ANY team! We are almost always in the hunt! A down season here and there will NOT have any real fan looking for the closest cliff to take the plunge! Not in Pittsburgh, not in Cali, not in China, NOWHERE!!!

Yeah. A buddy of mine put his name on the waiting list 12 years ago. He only has to wait 10 more years before hes at the top of the list

Down.

It's been a disappointing season when it looked like the Steelers had so much potential. After the win over the Giants, I was convinced the Steelers would catch fire and make the superbowl as long as we stayed away from Denver. It just feels like they really shot themselves in the foot this season.

They could tank 2 the next 2 games.... I'll be upset but I am not going to abandon them. Couple the Steelers in with the fact the penguins arent playing, it's a real bummer.

If I could afford season tickets, I sure as hell wouldnt give them up over this. IM A PIRATES FAN! HAHA!

Your uncle sounds like a rube

We've had worse seasons than this

So because the team might have a losing season your uncle wants to give up his tickets?

I'd happily take that burden from him

Glad I found this thread because I wanted to ask those of you who live in Pittsburgh will the media be tough on Tomlin? Will they be tough on Ben?

If this happened in NYC, the media and the fan base would be brutal and harsh on Tomlin and Ben, but what is the dynamic between the PIT media and the Steelers's coach and QB.

During Tomlin's little post game presser seen on ESPN, Tomlin basically said nothing and quoted his normal gobbledygook about not executing and .....well.....he just doenst say a damn thing.

So does anyone ever ask him or Ben tough questions or are they scared of being frozen out?

No hockey and no playoffs makes Mom go something, something!!!

Seriously, I can handle losses, and bad football seasons...hockey is what I'm more passionate about anyhow. I hate even having to go from June (end of Stanley Cup playoffs) to August (preseason football) without the two sports I love.

The city will be ok, for now...but without hockey, and with a terrible football season, and then the Pirates, I think it'll get a little unsettled around here lol.

How do you know 60,000 people are on the list? Did you call the Steelers and ask? Also, he said he is not giving them up because of losing a few games in a row. It has to do with financial reasons and the fact we have lacked heart these last few games.
