Vokoun gets the start tonight....

Evgeni Malkin will be a game-time decision and so is Marc-Andre Fleury. #NHL

Evgeni Malkin doing line rushes today. That's news. He's with wingers Morrow, Neal. Back tonight? #Penguins

Malkin also on the top PP unit, on a point, with Martin, Crosby, Neal and Kunitz. #Penguins

What a great trade. When healthy, the top two lines will be sick, and the third line does not look too shabby either. It is also great knowing that Morrow and Iginla both wanted to come to Pittsburgh by waiving their no trade clause. Lets make a run for the cup.

Lets Go Pens.

Head coach Dan Bylsma had a few lineup notes for tonight's game...

Malkin is a game-time decision
Fleury is a game-time decision
Vokoun is starting in net as previously planned
Evgeni Malkin, who's missed the last 9 games with a upper-body injury, skated on a line with Neal and Morrow. Despres, Engelland and Eaton rotated on the third pairing. The rushes looked like this...

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Morrow-Malkin-Neal
Cooke-Sutter-Kennedy
Glass-Vitale-Adams
(Bennett, Jeffrey)

Orpik-Martin
Murray-Niskanen
Despres-Eaton-Engelland

Also, Malkin practiced on the top power-play unit with Martin, Crosby, Neal and Kunitz. The second unit was Niskanen, Despres, Kennedy, Dupuis and Morrow providing the net-front presence.

Final note: Adams switched to center for a couple of rushes with Vitale playing the right wing

Malkin back tonight? Penguins activate star forward from injured reserve

Jason Brough

Evgeni Malkin could be back in the Pittsburgh lineup tonight when the Penguins host the Jets.

The club announced this afternoon that Malkin (shoulder) has been activated from injured reserve and that forward Beau Bennett has been re-assigned to its AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

I must admit that it's pretty AWESOME the Penguins "stole" Iginla away from the Bruins. Haha, Boston! Great fit for us, he adds depth, scoring, leadership, grittiness, and playoff experience - everything the Penguins could use. I applaud the move by Shero. His aggression shows that he is willing to make a commitment to winning and the "now". I just hope the Penguins can take advantage of this situation and win it all!

He had a couple of big hits, which were pretty sweet to see. I know it was only his first game, and I am anxious to see his play the rest of the season. I don't see Murray getting on the score sheet much. I see him more for his physicality and defense, which is probably what Shero brought him in for.

Solid game last night against the #3 seed in the East. I was REALLY impressed with the defense. They blocked shots, killed a 5 on 3, the PK was great! It looks like the team is riding the high out. Also great to see Vokoun get the shutout. That's TWO shutouts in a row. This is very unusual for us Penguins fans, on 2 in a row! Awesome boys!!

I was all for Iggy with Sid, but now I'm starting to think you spread out the wealth...create 3 scoring lines.

Put Iginla with Malkin and Neal... use Iggy like Staal and put him out there with Crosby a few shifts to break things up, Kunitz can bond with Malkin like he did last year.

So...to add some more spice

Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Iginla-Malkin-Neal
Kennedy-Sutter-Morrow
Cooke-Vitale/Jeffrey-Adams

hey - it's fun to play with new toys

I liked how Morrow took over the net too, he just parked himself there all night, he opened up space for Malkin and Neal to buzz around, and Murray ("Hing a dinga dirgen" - Douglas Murray, the Scottish Viking) ("And Murray looked at Kane like he was gonna eat him!") was slapping shots all over....this is gonna be FUN!

Kidding. I didn't watch the game last night but I did catch the highlights and all I could keep thinking was, what is the power play going to be like with Iggy on the ice? Sid, Iggy, Malkin, Neal and Letang? That's not a bad starting unit.

Me too. I would like the Pens to be more consistent. When they are not on their game it seems like they have stretches where they "lapse" and can't clear the puck, shoot on goal, and look out of position. Sometimes being too aggressive can lead to that. I hope Bylsma realizes that and takes SOME chances, but not as many as in last night's game. Play it like a playoff game. Get a lead, don't get too cocky, and make the other team beat you; don't beat yourself.

High demand for ex-captain’s new jersey

Looking to get your hands on one of those new Jarome Iginla jerseys in Calgary.

Well, you better get in line.

Sports stores in the country aren’t only buying old jerseys and t-shirts as memorabilia, there is now a huge demand for Iginla in black and gold.

Chinook Centre Jersey City store manager Ashley Proulx tells 660News the interest has been “insane.”

“They are asking you know every minute of every day since yesterday about Pittsburgh stuff for Iginla. We’re obviously going to get in, but we need a couple of weeks to get it all in our store but demand is huge,” says Proulx.

“Obviously people have picked their choice of post-season team because they’re with Iginla 100 per cent like if Iginla wins the Stanley Cup, it’ll be Calgary winning the Stanley Cup,” adds Proulx.

Yeah, that's most likely what it is. Nothing concrete yet, but I'm hearing several teeth lost.

Another great game though (minus the refs tossing Kunitz for the game). That 5 on 3 kill was epic, as was the beating the Pens put on the Islanders in the 3rd.

Vokoun is en fuego right now...I wonder if Bylsma keeps him in net on Tues.

There is just so much energy coming from this team right now, they are truly clicking together...adding 3 new players hasn't changed their game at all. Great to see all the new guys fitting right in. It's just great to see them having so much fun and winning at the same time.

Letang will be another week or two, broken toe.

Depres was in the lineup for Martin today, so they'll probably just stick with him.

It sucks that Martin got injured, but our defense really hasn't missed a step. Bylsma was talking about dressing 7 defensemen anyway, because they are so stacked right now. I'm not too concerned.

I see that Despres is the fill-in for Martin. I trust him in this position. Engellend also played today for Letang. I believe he's been a healthy scratch, so it's good to see some of these guys get playing time. AS long as it's just his teeth - we should be OK

Crosby lost several teeth after a sailing puck — off the stick blade of defenseman Brooks Orpik — caught him flush early in the first period. He crumpled to the ice, left with a blood-stained white towel pressed covering his lips and was scheduled for oral surgery later Saturday, coach Dan Bylsma said.

There were no signs of concussion symptoms, and Crosby's injury was mostly a teeth issue, multiple sources said.

http://triblive.com/sports/penguins/pensgalleries/3754158-74/penguins-crosby-nhl#axzz2OwywyphQ

There was no immediate word on any additional injuries -- facial fractures or a concussion, for example -- although fixing his teeth got priority over examinations for any other medical concerns.

Remaining in the hospital overnight was a possibility, although a close acquaintance said, "He will be OK."

Crosby out indefinitely after surgery on broken jaw
Sunday, 03.31.2013 / 2:11 PM / News
NHL.com

Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely after having surgery for a broken jaw, the team announced via Twitter on Sunday.

Crosby was injured on his first shift against the New York Islanders on Saturday when defenseman Brooks Orpik fired a slap shot that changed direction and caught Crosby just under the visor.

Crosby was down for several seconds but skated off under his own power accompanied by team training staff. He went to the Penguins locker room and did not return to the game, won by Pittsburgh 2-0 for the team's 15th straight victory.

The Penguins' next two games are Tuesday at home against the Buffalo Sabres and Wednesday on the road against the New York Rangers. The Penguins are two wins shy of tying the NHL record for consecutive wins, set by the 1992-93 Penguins.

Well, I'm not happy to hear Sid is out indefinitely with a broken jaw. It's really unfortunate for him, given all the injuries he has dealt with. And just when the Penguins have all the players acquired in trades ready to play, the injury bug strikes. SMH.

The good news, and more important news, IMO, is that Sid will be healthy for the playoffs. I think Pittsburgh is in great shape at the moment for the postseason as well as locking up home ice. The chances of winning the division are in our favor. Keep winning and that will happen. Not so sure about the President's Trophy, but that might not be important.

I think this team is so talented with all of its players that it will find a way to continue winning in the final month of the season. I'm not worried. Yeah it sucks not to have Sid in the lineup, but other guys will step up and contribute. I know it.

I wish this were true, but we can't be sure of anything right now.

Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero provided an update on the health of Sidney Crosby – and his franchise – after visiting the star in the hospital on Sunday.

First things first, Shero seemed upbeat about Crosby’s status, as he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Shelly Anderson.

“He was up and around, in good spirits. The doctor did a good job,” Shero said. “I thought he looked better than I thought he would.”

He noted that the 25-year-old star’s jaw wasn’t wired shut and reiterated the updates that a) Crosby is out indefinitely and b) “indefinitely” doesn’t necessarily mean a ton of time.

Shero said he’ll need more time to tell if the team’s captain will be ready for the playoffs

With titanium plates, Crosby's jaw expected to heal quickly

The type of jaw surgery that Sidney Crosby endured last weekend after being hit in the face with a puck should, at the latest, allow him to return to game action by the time the playoffs begin in a month, experts say.

"As long as he keeps his nourishment up -- and he should since he's not wired shut -- he should be good to go in three to four weeks," said David Dattilo, director of oral and maxillofacial surgery for West Penn Allegheny Health System.

How soon a hockey player gets back on the ice and tries to compete is based on "choices that people make," Dr. Kellman said. "How much risk are they willing to take?"

Dr. Dattilo, who has done hundreds of similar "plating" surgeries like Mr. Crosby's, said Mr. Crosby could be back on the ice doing moderate workouts early this week.

But he would not advise end-to-end skating for a few days while swelling from both the puck and surgery heals.

Strenuous activity increases blood pressure, which can add to swelling, which results in loosened sutures, Dr. Dattilo said, and "you want the body to heal well."

"You want the bones to mend properly so you don't get a non-union of a fracture that could cause lots of problems and keep him out the rest of the year," he said.

The timing and the jaw injury itself appear to be similar to what Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger experienced in 2006 when his motorcycle collided with a car whose driver failed to yield and turned left in front of him. The accident occurred a month before preseason camp was to begin.

Mr. Roethlisberger, who was not wearing a helmet, also did not have his jaw wired shut and was in camp on time that year.

If all goes well in three to four weeks, Dr. Dattilo said, Mr. Crosby won't even necessarily need special headgear to protect his jaw "because his jaw will be just as strong as before, and probably stronger because it will be metal-reinforced."

Sutter is exactly who I wish they would have just started the Kunitz/Dupuis line with. TK just made no sense at all.

It's not looking good for the Pens. They look like they forgot to show up. Completely without energy, out of position, can't make plays. The PK is hurting again too. At least Duper got on the board again. He's quietly having another good year.

Can't make plays, can't pass, can't get the puck out of their own end, can't score - I can think of maybe 2 or 3 other really good scoring chances the past 2 games, and they managed to miss those chances easily

Remember when Malkin didn't suck? Those were the days.

It makes a big difference when the best player in the world is not on the ice. This should put to rest the Crosby vs Malkin debate. Now I know it has only been two games, but when Malkin was out the Pens did not look this bad. There is plenty of time to right the ship.

There appears to be a bit of good news for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as general manager Ray Shero updated Sidney Crosby's status on Thursday.

"He suffered a broken jaw," explained Shero to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com. "Contrary to recent rumours there is no sign of any concussion symptoms or concussion at this time. We will continue to monitor things as we go forward but at this time we are dealing with a broken jaw."

Me as well. It was great Jokinen made an immediate impact on the ice. He certainly came to play. Also no way we win this game without Fleury in net. The defense let him in a few precarious situations, but he made the necessary saves. Was really hoping he would have earned another shutout, but the shootout W was sweet. Surprised Geno couldn't put it away. Great goal by Jokinen in the SO. Can you say the next Pitt Pens hero? :tt02:

Neal's got to step it up too. 1 goal in the last 12 games? 13? That's where we need our goals to come from - Malkin, Neal, Kunitz. These are our big guns without Sid. Scoring 1 goal is not going to get it done down the stretch. I hope the goal scoring will improve once Letang returns - which I hear is likely on Tuesday night in Carolina.

In last night's game I was disappointed with how the team continues to turn the puck over in the defensive zone. We can't keep doing that. Sooner or later it will result in a goal nearly every time. Without Fleury's stellar play, it could have EASILY been 3 or 4 goals for the Rangers that way. Glad it didn't happen. We need to work on this in practice.

“Having gone a week or so it’s gotten better and I feel better than after the first couple of days,” said Crosby, who has missed the team’s last three games. “I’m going to see the doctor all this week. Whenever he feels comfortable and feels like I can go out and skate, that’s something I’ll wait to hear from him.”

“I’m not too worried about the teeth,” he said. “I’m more worried about making sure I’m healed. Hopefully, that’s sooner.”

“It’s impossible to keep weight. I’ll be excited when I can eat,” Crosby said. “It’s been shakes. It hasn’t been too enjoyable that way. Maybe this week I’ll start doing that.”

Good streams, secure site (won't get shut down or tracked by the feds), and usually has multiple streams for every game. They have just about every sport you could want to watch on there.

Streams are posted in the 'live sports' section about an hour before gametime, but if you want to know a little bit ahead of that, you can look in the forums. The streamers typically post there info earlier than that.

I'm afraid Iginla is stapled to Geno's wing for the rest of the year come hell or high water.

You're right about Orpik. He looks off his game. At times he looks frustrated out there. I hope this doesn't cause him to lose his head and take stupid penalties.

The defense did not look good, I agree. How did we win? It's probably by virtue of the fact we played against one of the worst teams in the NHL. Tonight against Tampa and Saturday against Florida will also feature clubs who are at the bottom of the League. This is where the team should start figuring out some team chemistry, without Crosby and Neal. These are also important learning opportunities, and we really shouldn't lose (hopefully).

But I will give the Pens a pass from their effort Tuesday night. They've never really fared well in Carolina. It's one of those tough places to play for them. I think that is inside their head. I would think we will see a different effort against Tampa tonight and Florida on Saturday.

I would also like to see Malkin to keep it up. Clutch goal on Tuesday. We need MORE of that and will need MORE of that in the playoffs. Also, where's Kunitz been? Not on the scoresheet lately...

I agree Beau needs to be in the linup the remainder of the season. Fresh young legs and creates scoring oppertunities.

I think I would rather avoid the Rangers in the 1st round. I think they are big and physical and that could take is toll on the Pens. Not that I think the Rangers would win the series, I just think a series with them could take alot out of the Pens for a following series.

and I absolutely loved how Murray handled the fight. Dude shoves him, Murray drops the stick, gloves, and helmet, slicks his hair back and starts firing away. Awesome stuff. (even though the other dude was too lame to drop HIS helmet)

The new guys are looking pretty damn good. Hopefully this game was the jump start Geno needed, when they banged him around it lit a fire in his eyes. They woke up the Russian bear from his nap!

I liked when they came to his defense, and Orpik took a free shot at Saint Looie - see, we'll smack your stars around if you want to play that game.

I love the way the Pens played tonight. Malkin may be getting back to his former self, scoring goals.

Welcome back Letang.

Loved seeing Murray drop the gloves. The only thing I hated about the fight was the puss from Tampa leaving his helmet on. Murray pounded the helmet a few times.

Awesome win last night, indeed! Love that Malkin looked good when it mattered. The PK was a little questionable. I hope Bylsma devotes some more practice time to it. We will need the PK come the postseason. Though I do credit Tampa because they are one of the top PP units. Good thing we won't see them in the playoffs.

Thank goodness. The Devils seem to also give the Penguins fits. We haven't fared too well against them in the regular season except maybe twice since the turn of the century... If they were going to be in the playoffs, I could easily see them derailing us en route to the Cup.

I can finally laugh at NJ for all their losing. Take that! No wonder Brodeur is stuck on 666 wins.. because he is the biggest DEVIL of them all! :toofunny:

Sid is eating mashed potatoes!

Coach Dan Bylsma called Crosby and suggested it would be good for him to join his teammates in the Sunshine State.Crosby is not yet skating but was given medical clearance to fly. Crosby, who was unable to consume anything other than milkshakes during the past 10 days, was given the green light to eat mashed potatoes earlier this week. Although there remains no timetable for Crosby's return, he wants to return before the playoffs and would like to resume skating next week."

I believe he is with the team on the road trip. During the Tampa game they showed him sitting in a box. So it looks like he can move and function, lol.

As far as him being ready for the playoffs, I guess we'll have to wait and see. I would say he probably needs to make some strong progress over the next 2 weeks because the season ends about at the end of the month. If he skates this coming week and gets back to practice the last week of the regular season, I would feel good about his return for the post-season.

Yep, he is not playing tonight. I'm wondering if he was injured on a hit he took in Tampa during the 3rd period.

Stb - I know Crosby already wears a visor, but IMO it might not be a bad idea if he considers the full cage. One might think it looks ugly, but the visor doesn't make a player invincible. Personally, if I were in his situation, that is what I would do. Not worth the risk to me for another puck or a player's stick to come up and create another severe facial injury.

The Panthers gave the Penguins a little bit of a fight last night. They didn't go down easy. Penguins were fortunate to come out alive due to their great play. Flower looked good back in net after the night off in Tampa. The goal he gave up was one of those goals one would roll their eyes at. He should have earned a shut out but oh well.

Penguins Sign Goaltender Eric Hartzell

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Eric Hartzell, to a one-year entry-level contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal runs through the 2012-13 season and has an average annual value of $925,000.

Hartzell, 23, led Quinnipiac University to the school’s first-ever Frozen Four appearance this past weekend at CONSOL Energy Center. Hartzell helped the Bobcats reach Saturday night’s championship game.

The 6-foot-4, 187-pound netminder was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA’s top college hockey player this season after posting a 30-7-5 record, 1.57 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in 42 starts

Thanks for the article on the Pens signing a goalie. Does this say anything about the goalies we have in the minors, particularly Theissen? He did play several games for us last year... I'm just curious if Shero/Lemieux are concerned with the goalies at WBS, that they aren't viable for the NHL as backups.

That's just how the scheduling works. The league had the Penguins play a lot of games early in the season. For the last few weeks the team has seen more off days. I would consider that a benefit. The injured players can rest/heal and practice. I'd rather have it where we have more days off now than play more games and become fatigued by the time the playoffs start, because that's when it counts.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby skated before the team's practice Monday.

Crosby wore a protective mask while skating with injured teammates James Neal and Paul Martin.

Coach Dan Bylsma said there is no timetable for Crosby's return, but called it a positive step for the NHL's leading scorer.

"I would say a foot in the water," Bylsma said. "I didn't go out there and see how hard he did go, but I know he was just out for basically a skate. He got out there for a little bit of exercise and to get on the ice."

PITTSBURGH -- Brenden Morrow hasn't even been in Pittsburgh for a month. At the rate he is going, the veteran forward should soon feel free to run for mayor.

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/2013/04/17/brendenmorrow_2853-430x298.jpg

Morrow scored two goals for the second straight game and dropped Montreal's P.K. Subban in a third-period fight as the Penguins moved closer to clinching the top seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 6-4 victory over the Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Acquired from Dallas on March 24, Morrow's tenure with the Penguins got off to a slow start. He didn't score until his seventh game with his new team but has now netted five goals in eight days.

"He was absolutely flying," Pittsburgh forward Jarome Iginla said. "It was great."

Iginla, picked up just before the trade deadline last month, scored his second goal for the Penguins. Doug Murray, brought in from San Jose on March 25, scored for the first time in more than two years. And centre Brandon Sutter -- who came to Pittsburgh in a stunning swap last June that sent popular centre Jordan Staal to Carolina -- added two goals as Pittsburgh won its fifth straight without Crosby.

Let's sweep the B's!! Love to beat Boston. They once thought they had a monopoly on the colors black and gold. They'll be a good test for the Pens, IMO. I know, I said that about Montreal and look what happened. But the B's are at home coming off a loss to a division rival. They tend to play the Pens tough defensively. I would think the NHL would postpone the game tomorrow as well if the situation does not improve. Given the circumstances already, the Penguins/Sabres game originally schedule for tomorrow night was moved to next Tuesday. So now Pens have back-to-backs against Ottawa (road) and Buffalo (home).

I feel bad for Boston that this is going to affect them by having to postpone all these games. They're going to be weary headed into the playoffs.

The Rangers might force us into a defensive struggle and to play more of their style. And you never know when Lundqvist can get hot. I still think the Pens could beat the Rangers in a 7 game series, but I don't feel as confident in us winning as I do if we play Winnipeg. Pavlec is no Lundqvist and I'd rather deal with Byfuglien than Callahan, et. al.

All Boston - too many penalties, can't even make it through their own PP

Beau the only excitement, only scoring chance

Yeah, Pens came out slow and lagging in that first period. Looks like they were a little tired. Boston cycled the puck well on several occasions. Usually that doesn't happen against Pittsburgh.

Vokoun should have made the save on Marchand's goal. He looks a little flat himself. Good to see Bennett tie it at 1! :tt02:

Big win for the Pens. Home ice advantage throughout the playoffs. I thought Vokoun played a pretty good game and kept the Pens in the game in that 1st period. Beau Bennett looked solid also with his puck handling.

I like the way Vokoun bounced back after giving up the first goal of the game. He was under fire all afternoon and made many key saves. Pens turned the puck over and over, unfortunately, but way for Tomas to stop the shots. He yielded a nice effort today in giving Flower the day off. With 4 games next week including a back-to-back, I understand Bylsma's decision to play Vokoun today. And it paid off.

HOCKEY RETURNS TO BOSTON; PENS TOP BRUINS TO CLINCH EAST

BOSTON -- Another emotional video tribute. Another stirring performance of the national anthem by a packed arena. Another hockey game in Boston.

The sport returned to the city Saturday, a day after a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was captured, and the fans welcomed their Bruins back with cheers and greeted the Pittsburgh Penguins with jeers.

The Penguins clinched home-ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 3-2 win in the Bruins' second game since the bombings. It had been postponed from Friday night because of the manhunt. The mood was more sombre Wednesday night in another 3-2 loss at home in a shootout to the Buffalo Sabres.

"It was a little more of a celebration with everyone here, more of an opportunity for us to thank (police) and give our respects for the amazing job they did," Boston's Brad Marchand said. "It just seems like there's a whole different aura around the building. ... Everyone was a little more safe and excited that it's over."

One suspect was shot to death early Friday and the other was captured Friday night hiding under a tarp in a boat in a backyard in nearby Watertown.

A pregame slideshow on the video board above centre ice showed pictures of smiling policemen after the second suspect was taken into custody. Also shown were individual photos of Lu Lingzi, Krystle Campbell and Martin Richard, who were killed in Monday's bombings, and Sean Collier, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer shot to death by the suspects.

"Any human being would find some type of emotion in that pregame video and the memory when they're showing the victims," Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik said.

During the game, a fan held up an "MIT" pennant.

Before Wednesday's game, a video was shown of scenes after the bombings near the finish line. And, like Wednesday, veteran Bruins vocalist Rene Rancourt started the national anthem then gestured for the fans to join him -- and they did, loudly and emotionally.

"We felt the same way as last game with the ceremony and, again, with all the police and fireman and everything in the building," Marchand said. "It was a special time again, and we definitely built a lot of momentum off of that."

The postponement was the second of the week for the Bruins. Their game against the Ottawa Senators last Monday night, scheduled to start about four hours after the bombings, was rescheduled for April 28.

Before the game, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma wore a black T-shirt with the words "BOSTON STRONG" over his shirt and tie. Penguins players also wore them before the game.

"Everyone was proud to wear them," Orpik said.

During warmups, Bruins players wore baseball caps of the state police and Boston and Watertown police departments. The black cap for Watertown, where the suspect was taken into custody, had the Bruins "Spiked B" logo on the front and the word "STRONG" on the back.

The Penguins took a nine-point lead in the Eastern Conference over Montreal, which could get only eight more points in its remaining four games. The Bruins remained in fourth place with 57 points, 11 behind the Penguins, with five games to go.

"These types of races usually come down to the last game, last two games," Bylsma said, "and to be able to clinch the division and now clinch the conference this early says a lot for our team and how we've played through this shortened season with different types of injuries."

Pittsburgh won its sixth straight game despite the continued absence of some top offensive players. NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby missed his eighth game with a broken jaw, James Neal sat out his fifth because of a concussion and last season's NHL MVP Evgeni Malkin was sidelined for his third with a shoulder injury.

With the score 1-1 on goals by Marchand in the first period and Pittsburgh's Jussi Jokinen in the second, the Penguins got two power-play goals in 4 minutes. Tyler Seguin scored the final goal for the Bruins with 2.6 seconds remaining.

Iginla, nearly traded to Boston three weeks ago, played his first game against the Bruins since he was dealt by Calgary to Pittsburgh on March 28.

He was booed every time he touched the puck during a third-period power play. The jeers grew louder after he scored on a 50-foot shot from the centre of the blue line as Chris Kunitz screened goalie Tuukka Rask.

"I guess I'd be prepared for that. I can understand that the fans wouldn't be too happy" that he decided to go to Pittsburgh instead of Boston, Iginla said.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli had been upset when his deal for Iginla fell through. The player had a no-trade clause and waived it to go to Pittsburgh instead of Boston.

Iginla's 12th goal of the season came went through Rask's legs at 4::43 of the third.

"Not too often I cost a game," he said. "Today I did."

Kris Letang scored on another power play against the NHL's top penalty-killing team at 8:29.

Marchand's opening goal at 10:18 of the first period was his team-leading 17th and also came on a power play. Zdeno Chara carried the puck into centre ice and passed to Marchand on the left. Marchand then sped between two Penguins in the left circle and beat goalie Tomas Vokoun from 15 feet at 10:18.

The Penguins tied it on Jokinen's 10th goal at 5:10 of the second period. With the puck loose in front of the net, Rask stretched to his left but Jokinen lifted it above the goalie's glove.

Bylsma said G Marc-Andre Fleury will play three of the remaining four regular-season games.

BRUINS COMMENTATOR EDWARDS APOLOGIZES FOR COOKE REMARKS

Boston Bruins play-by-play commentator Jack Edwards issued an apology for comments that he made regarding Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke during the broadcast of the Bruins 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.

Edwards, who works for NESN, compared Cooke to one of the most notorious criminals in American history.

"When the Pittsburgh writers nominated Matt Cooke for the Masterton award for dedication and perseverance to hockey, the justification being that Cooke had changed his ways after basically assassinating Marc Savard," Edwards said on NESN.

"Nominating Cooke for the Masterton is about the equivalent of nominating Sirhan Sirhan as the prisoner of the year. "

Sirhan was convicted of assassinating U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy in 1968 and is serving life in prison.

Following the game, Edwards posted an apology message on his twitter account.

"I am sorry for insulting Matt Cooke, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the National Hockey League, and anyone else upset by my Cooke comments," Edwards said in series of three tweets. "I made a mistake. My fault all the way. This is my apology. Bad week, bad emotional reaction by me. Not fun to make a mistake. I made a mistake. I am sorry for it. I can move forward if you can."

Cooke escaped suspension for a blind-side hit on Savard in March of 2010, which led the NHL to change the rules on the same type of hit in the following year. Savard suffered a concussion on the play and would not return to action until the post-season.

Cooke was selected as the 2012 Masterton Trophy nominee for the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association.

For me I would like to see anyone but the Rangers. I think the Pens could manhandle the Jets and Isles. Rangers could give us problems - IMO they're a better club than their record and a #8 seed. I wouldn't mind Ottawa because we've had a playoff rivalry with them since the 2004-2005 Lockout. I hate the Sens and it would be pretty cool to stick it to them again!

Personally:

Like to face:
Jets (Scrappy, but in over their heads. They'd just be happy to be in the playoffs.)
Rangers (They're talented, but dysfunctional. They've looked vulnerable since last postseason.)

Not like to face:
Isles (While they're talented offensively, the main fear here are the irrational flash backs to 93.)
Sens (They've defied the odds all year and they nearly beat the #1 seed Rangers last year. They're straight honey badger at this point, which is a dangerous type of team to face in the playoffs...)

I think it's funny that the CFL makes the front page of the Ottawa Sun.

I think it's funny the Sun's sports writers are obsessed with penises

Why is Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke so interested in Don Brennan's package?

Matt Cooke was quite focused at Scotiabank Place on Monday morning.

He was focused on that night's game against the Senators. He was focused on helping the Penguins track down the Blackhawks in the overall standings. He was focused on his job as a penalty killer and pest.

Then, after practice, he was focused on the humongous media scrum around his stall in the dressing room.

And he was focused on my package.

Cooke must have read the Ottawa Sun on his way to the rink because something in it clearly had him rattled. And I'm still not sure which part.

After listening to Cooke answer questions about the Feb. 13 incident in which his skate sliced 70% of the way through Erik Karlsson's Achilles tendon, I went to speak with other players in the room about different matters. Like every other reporter there.

On the way out, I found Cooke waiting to have a word in private with me.

He wanted to tell me I have no balls. At first I think he said "small balls." But by the time he had finished, and knew Penguins GM Ray Shero was listening, he had decided I had none. Oh, and I believe he also mumbled something about me having no penis before disappearing into the players-only room, which I found interesting.

I will not take this opportunity to, ahem, brag about my manhood.

Cooke accused me of hiding behind the cameras, which is funny. In scrums that large, none of us scribes can get past the guys shooting video. Besides, what exactly would I be hiding from?

Cooke wanted to know why I didn't ask any questions. It's because I only had one, and somebody beat me to the punch. When Cooke held to his story that the Karlsson injury was a "complete freak accident," I'd heard enough.

Again, I don't think he was aiming for Karlsson's Achilles, but I've watched the replay many times and I'm convinced he was either trying to hurt the Senators best player or he was being careless enough with his boot blade to warrant a suspension.

Anyway, I've stated the opinion many times since the incident, and if that was what angered Cooke, well, he must also be pissed at a number of other people, because on this one, I am not a lone wolf.

My best guess is he was mad I pointed out in Monday's column he has averaged less than two fights per season in his NHL career, which isn't many for a guy that plays on the edge that he does. Maybe Cooke didn't like the way I put it -- that he has only settled scores like a man 20 times in his 14 years -- but again, I don't know.

Other than that, I believe I just reminded everyone this was the first meeting of the two teams since Cooke's Valentine's Day massacre on Karlsson's ankle. I didn't really think any Senators would exact revenge because of the game's importance, and that Cooke wouldn't let them, anyway. I was right.

On Cooke's first shift, with the crowd booing as soon as he hopped over the boards, Chris Neil skated directly to him with an invitation to fight. Naturally, Cooke declined. Before getting back to the bench, he drew an interference penalty on Eric Gryba, probably not so much because it was Cooke, but that the rookie defenceman forgot the rules.

At the whistle, Neil had another long chat with Cooke. And again, Cooke looked like he wanted to be elsewhere.

For much of game's remainder, the only time you remembered he was in the building was when the "Matt Cooke Sucks" chants came from the crowd -- or pretty much every time he was on the ice.

For the record, I kind of like Cooke, even if he isn't as effective as he used to be. He's controversial, which is a good thing. And yeah, he's dirty, but that just means he'll do anything to win. I only wish he'd answer for his actions the way real men who play his game do.

Maybe he should grow a set of his own before worrying about mine.

Awesome to hear Malkin is back tonight! IMO a little late regular season can't hurt him for the playoffs. Speaking of injuries, I'm not optimistic about Crosby and Neal returning for the playoffs. Yep. Stupid plays led to goals. I knew this would come back and hurt us. But you have to acknowledge that Buffalo came to play. The Sabres got us out of our rhythm and didn't let the Penguins control the game. This is the second time this year they came into CONSOL and beat us. Good thing we don't have to face them in the playoffs?

Orpik will be evaluated today. Hope it's not too bad. Now is NOT the time for key players to get injured. I'd rather see Bylsma play it conservative against NJ and Carolina to end the year. I agree with you about the Rangers. Winnipeg's loss last night was a killer, even the fact they didn't record a point. They need to win their final game and hope the Rangers and/or Senators lose out to make the playoffs. Kind of a stretch if you ask me. Looks like Martin could possibly play on Saturday, depending on how practice goes for him. I think Neal might return in the middle of the first round of the playoffs. As for Crosby, I would make a definitive bet right now he will miss the first round. It's not a good sign there has not been a "timetable" set for him practicing or returning. We all remember how that was the status when he was out with a concussion. And what happened? He never returned, even during the playoffs.

still don't know who we're playing

Sens, Rangers, Isles all tied up for 6th 7th 8th

I think we can contain Tavares enough for 4 games....I think I'll take the Isles - let Boston have the Rangers

I agree the Pens have been playing these last few games just to make it through the end of the season, and try not to sustain anymore injuries. With that being said I do not like going into the playoffs on a losing streak ( survive one more game tomorrow ). I have confidence once the first round starts they will bring the intensity back up and start punishing teams again.

I'll take the Isles or Sens. I think the Penguins can take either of them in 4 or 5 games. If we draw the Rangers, it could be a 5 or 6 game series. But at this point, IMO it's whatever happens, happens. I'm just extremely thankful this team achieved its potential this year and dominated the Eastern Conference. If it weren't for injuries, Pittsburgh would have won the President's Trophy, Crosby would have won the scoring race (by a landslide), etc. I just hope this club can achieve in the playoffs. THAT is where it counts; nothing else matters at this point.

well the Isles got 1 pt in a shoot-out loss, puts them up temporarily

they are done, with the other teams still games to play, they could come back to 8th for us if Rangers and Sens can win a game

Yep, right on. The Rangers have the Devils today at 3 PM. Ottawa has Philly tonight then Boston tomorrow. I like the chances of the Rangers earning a win and/or Ottawa gaining 2 points in their final 2 games. I am hoping this comes true!

I would also like to see a Penguins win tonight. It would be great to end the regular season on a winning note. Plus, with Neal and Martin to come back it would be nice to see them pick up where they left off.

Did it seem at all discouraging at all the Pens lost to Buffalo and at New Jersey in their last 2 games?

Tavares and co. can score, but the Isles have the weakest goalie(s).

Not by much, but hope it's them.

Kunitz/Malkin/Neal line - explodes, Neal with the hat trick

Bout fucking time they listened to me! - now KEEP IT THAT WAY

8 goals is very nice, but Fleury is sloppy again after a 2-0 lead

still waiting for our opponent - but it'll be Caps vs. Rangers - - ha ha

that should be fun to watch
