What's your guys thoughts?

Hal Hunter could be a good pickup, but lets not think we are going to jump to more Zone stretch plays without a cutback runner. Dwyer, Redman, Batch are not good zone scheme runners. Mendenhall is.

With the current backs and Will Johnson around, its likely there would be more power man blocking, but that isnt anything Hunter can't deal with.

Gonzo could you elaborate on the Steelers OL blocking schemes for me? Why have the Steelers consistently drafted huge OL like Colon, Kemoeatu and Gilbert and not gone to a man/power blocking scheme more heavily?

They do run more of a Man blocking scheme. They mix in some zone, but not much. There seems to have been a perception that the Steelers ran a lot of ZBS when Zeirline was here and even Kuglers first couple seasons. I actually charted some games in the 2011 season and at times they ran less than 5 zone block runs per game.

They draft big guys and generally have some guards that can pull and trap. DeCastro, Pouncey are super athletic. Colon and Kemo moved very well for their size and Foster is adequate.

I like the makeup of the line, but am not sold on Beechum inside at 300 lbs, although his technique is good. He plays high and doesnt move his legs well after contact in the run game. Gilbert, Pouncey, DeCastro, Adams are a good 4 IMO.

Sounds like he would be a good choice...

Baron Batch is the only current back we have signed to a contract.

Well, if we do opt for a ZBS, (which i would prefer) we will need a RB for it, and will need to keep one of either Dwyer or Redman as well, not both. I prefer Redman.

Agreed.

It was a shame-- this year was Redman's chance to shine, but he started off the season injured after a groin pull in the (2nd?) preseason game.

Dwyer ended up having the better season, but I definitely agree:

healthy Redman > healthy Dwyer

I agree, losing Redman would be a mistake in my opinion. He's a great back-up runner who could be counted on to carry the ball in case of injuries. The inconsistent starting line-up for the offensive line this year and over the past few years has made it hard to really evaluate any of these RB's completely.

Add the Running back by committee failure to that and it makes it easy to blame Redman for not being a star RB, when talent wise he really isn't one to begin with.

I get a kick out of this thread. Most probably want to switch to a Zone Blocking system because its different than what we do....but most likely want to get rid of Mendenhall, despite the fact that he is the best back that has been on the roster to run a zone system.

With the O line under contract, its likely better to go with a power man system, but who knows what changes are coming.

It's that time of year, after a rough season. People are angry and thinking with their hearts. We can expect the next 5 to 6 months to be full of irrational notions and complaints on this message board.

I have been saying it for weeks-- getting rid of Mendenhall would be a bad move right now. He is the best fit, and the only legit #1 RB on our team right now, if he can get his attitude fixed and his head screwed on straight. I think Tomlin is the right man for that job....

We are not in any position to be looking for ANOTHER franchise RB this draft, with so many other areas of much greater need.

People have bagged on his "dancing around" for his entire tenure-- but you have to have a hole to hit first. Otherwise, you just end up running into the backs of your own blockers for a 2 yard loss, a.k.a Willie Parker during his last year with us.

Steeler Depot claims that Hunter left the Senior Bowl practices with a job..... nothing more.... Was it the stillers?

I also like the fact that he was a strength coach which is what some of these olinemen need...

I seriously doubt Alan Faneca is a fan of the Steelers organization anymore.
