View Full Version : Meteorite blows up over Siberia

After being told for weeks not to worry about about the "near miss" of asteroid 2012 DA14 that is going to pass by Earth later today, it turns out something else was coming our way

Bright objects, apparently debris from a meteorite, streaked through the sky in western Siberia early on Friday, accompanied by a boom that damaged buildings across a vast area of territory. Hundreds of people were reported to have been injured, most from breaking glass.

Emergency officials had reported no deaths by Friday afternoon, but administrators in the city of Chelyabinsk said that more than 750 residents had sought medical care and 31 had been hospitalized.

Russian experts believe the blast was caused by a 10-ton meteor known as a bolide, which created a powerful shock wave when it reached the Earth’s atmosphere, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement. Scientists believe the bolide exploded and evaporated at a height of around 20 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface, but that small fragments may have reached the ground, the statement said....

A small asteroid, known as 2012 DA14, is expected to pass close to Earth later on Friday, NASA reported on its Web site. Aleksandr Y. Dudorov, a physicist at Chelyabinsk State University, said it was possible that the meteorite may have been flying alongside the asteroid.

“What we witnessed today may have been the precursor of that asteroid,” said Mr. Dudorov in a telephone interview.

It's global warming.

CNN anchor questions whether global warming to blame for asteroid

The threat of global warming may stretch so far beyond Earth that it affects meteorites millions of miles away in space -- at least according to one CNN anchor.

“Talk about something else that’s falling from the sky and that is an asteroid. What’s coming our way? Is this an effect of, perhaps, of global warming, or is this just some meteoric occasion?” CNN’s Deborah Feyerick asked Bill “The Science Guy” Nye, head of the Planetary Society, in a Saturday segment.

“No, no, no, no,” Nye replied to the spaced-out question, before gracefully extending Feyerick a lifeline by saying “except it’s all science. The word meteorology and the word meteor come from the same root, so, uhh…”

“Dinosaurs unavailable for comment,” one person slyly commented on Twitter.

Wrong. Ben is clearly at fault here. Can you imagine what Tom Brady would be able to do with a Meteroite?!?

The "exploding meteorite" cover story begins to unravel

Russian nationalist lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, long known for his flamboyance and outrageous remarks, said Friday that meteorite fragments had not rained down on Russia in the morning, but that the light flashes and tremors in several of the country’s regions resulted from US weapons tests, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

“Those aren’t meteors falling, it’s the Americans testing new weapons," Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, told journalists several hours after the Emergencies Ministry began issuing statements on the incident, which has injured hundreds and damaged scores of buildings.

Bay Area sees meteor flash overhead

SAN FRANCISCO -- On the heels of a close fly-by of an asteroid 17,000 miles from Earth earlier today and a devastating meteor that landed in Russia, Bay Area stargazers caught a glimpse of another meteor over the Peninsula tonight.

Social media users reported seeing the blue flash of the meteor at about 8 p.m. tonight, and sightings were reported throughout the Bay Area, from Santa Clara to Fairfield, and even in the Central Valley cities of Fresno and Stockton.

'Fireball' lights up Florida sky

MIAMI - A fireball lit up the Florida sky Sunday evening.

People from as far south as Key West and as far north as Jacksonville reported seeing the flash of light.

Clear skies Sunday made it easy for people to see the fireball, which was essentially a very bright meteor.

Russian 'meteor' was actually a tiny asteroid, NASA says

At a news conference Friday, NASA scientists said the object that exploded over Russia was a “tiny asteroid” that measured roughly 45 feet across, weighed about 10,000 tons and traveled about 40,000 mph.

http://www.trbimg.com/img-511ec0db/turbine/la-sci-sn-russian-tiny-asteroid-20130215-001/599

The object vaporized roughly 15 miles above the surface of the Earth, causing a shock wave that triggered the global network of listening devices that was established to detect nuclear test explosions.

The force of the explosion measured between 300 and 500 kilotons, equivalent to a modern nuclear bomb, according to Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

Asteroids are tracked by telescope, as they are too far away to be detected by radar. Because of this, they are observable only when illuminated by the sun against a dark background. If they are small and dark-colored, they are far more difficult to observe.

In the case of the Russian asteroid, it approached Earth with the sun behind it.

White House already rejected the petition to build a Death Star

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:
•The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
•The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
•Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/response/isnt-petition-response-youre-looking

Good luck expecting them to be far sighted enough to spend whatever it takes to build radar stations on Mars and Jupiter to provide advance warning of the invasion fleet:mad:
