I'm not sure where I read this but the Steelers aren't optimistic about Spence at this point, but they will know more in the coming months.

As for Foote, I'm glad to see him still on the team, and I hope they can develop a player who can take over that spot and be a huge plus for the team.

EDIT: I must have read it in the Gerry Dulac post gazette article, 3rd paragraph here :

Foote, Foster, and very likely Burress getting resigned, Colon cut, this has been a very productive day already. I also have heard Dan Connor is coming in for a visit, while he is a betrer ideal fit for 4-3 I think he can do well here.

Sounds to me like we will be drafting an ILB at some point in this draft. You don't re-sign someone Foote's age unless you have a younger player targeted that you plan on developing.

No, Willie Williams is next. Maybe Jason Gildon can come out of retirement too since we arent signing young guys or the vets that still have fuel left. Just vets that will take less because no one else will give them that money.

Yeah, what is not to like. An 11-year veteran who has backup talent, has lost a step and gets cut off at the 2nd level by every guard on a zone block team. Cant see why they didnt give him a 5-year deal.

Kevin Greene is quitting his coaching job with the Packers to be a Steelers linebacker again. God, I hated hearing him give a pep talk to the packers during the Super Bowl telling them it was "Our time."

Good news?

Maybe because he knows the system.

But from a talent/improve your team move it's a lateral move at best.

I see it as a sign that Spence's rehab and return to form isn't going so well.

steelfury02

now this is a move where I believe we would have been worse off without him - it could be a lateral move because I do believe his skills have declined - but the way things are looking -not having him meant LB position was looking really thin, not to mention experience

Well this sucks for two reasons. The most glaring is, the best option we have pre-draft is Larry Foote? Shit. The other, and more important reason is that this could mean Sean Spence's rehab isn't going well and this was made out of necessity, not because they wanted to.

That being said, I very much doubt he's back after 2013.

I haven't heard any positive news coming out about him

the Steelers are thin inside because third-round draft pick Sean Spence's 2013 season and his career is in doubt because of a 2012 preseason knee injury.

Spence was a question mark before this injury even happened.

Drafting player like him that makes no impact ( to this point anyway) is why the Steelers are in the position they are in.

Spence shattered his leg, you can't blame him or the FO for that.

Exactly!! All the chatter was that Spence was looking good in camp and the preseason. Not his of the front office fault he had a brutal knee injury.

I don't mind the move - I just hope it is for backup money, and he can indeed be a backup for us. I can't see anyway he'll play out all 3 years.

No where in my post did I place blame on the front office.

What i said was Between injuries and draft mistakes we are in this position.

Uh... what?

It's difficult to make in impact when one's leg is Krumried before the season even starts.

Here is Spence's history.

Drafted.
Broke leg.
Did NOT play a snap in the regular season.
Steelers fans blame him for not making more tackles or forcing more fumbles while wearing a cast on the side-line.

Uh... what?

Spence injured his leg running untouched in the open field. I think it is fair to raise some concern about how prone he might be to injuries in the future. Injuries have ended many good players' careers.

steeltheone

Once again if we draft a player, and he is not on the field ( injuries. being a criminal or just a bad pick ) the reason does not really matter, this is the reason we are in the position we are in.

Nobody blames the player ( injuries ) but it hurts the franchise immensely.

It was a low risk deal. He probably won't finish it out. We have no one else, it was a smart business decision.

What are you thoughts on possibly bringing in Ernie Sims on a 2-year deal to challenge Foote for his starting spot or for depth at ILB? I think the former 1st round pick of the Lions proved he was good last year on the Cowboys by being asked to just be a fill in guy then one week later stepping up as being the playcaller on defense. I think he'd be a compliment to Foote and Timmons at ILB, especially since we don't know how Spence will be after that injury last season.
