Really excited about this (at least as much as you can be for a backup QB). I remember him picking us apart in that one raiders game.

He'll be a great backup for the next few years.

Nice signing - now to grab a rookie with a mid to late round pick to try and groom for the post Ben era.

Good. I've always like Bruce as a player. He can be a good backup. Hopefully he doesn't need to play though.

The Steelers seem to like QB's with really long and difficult to pronounce/spell names.

With the emphasis on late round or undrafted free agent. It's not time to groom somebody to replace Ben yet. What the Steelers do need is a rookie for the practice squad. Going out to look for a QB in the middle of the season is not good.

Smart signing. I'd still get someone in the draft or UDFA though.

The days of backing up Ben Roethlisberger with old-as-the-sea signal-callers has come to an end

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a three-year deal with quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, who spent the past two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Gradkowski is no savior, but looms as a better option than Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich, the ancient duo (at a combined 71 years old) who toiled behind Big Ben in recent years. Gradkowski barely played in Cincinnati because of the emergence of Andy Dalton, but was 3-5 in eight starts for the Oakland Raiders from 2009 to 2010.

It's a smart signing by Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger has been battered in recent years and the Steelers need more security behind him. Besides, Gradkowski -- already 30 -- might not be the last quarterback added. General manager Kevin Colbert is on record saying the team might look to the draft to add a young arm.

I was hoping for Drew Stanton, but I'll take it.

Now, draft Alex Carder in R7, and the back-up situation is looking much better than it has for a while.

Based on?

Cincinnati and Oakland didn't seem to think he was worth keeping. I hoped the Steelers would go after a young QB....guess I'm just bitter

Cincinnati and Oakland have much, much bigger needs than a backup Quarterback. I don't understand the outcry for a younger Quarterback to sit behind Ben - it's not like this is his last year. He's got another 4 - 5 years left in the tank. Gradkowski is a fine stop-gap kind of backup we can use in case of emergency.

We have more pressing needs than to draft and/or groom Ben's replacement with a younger kid that has no idea what he's doing. Would you be comfortable throwing a rookie into the huddle if Ben were to get injured this year? I wouldn't be. Bruce brings a veteran attitude and an element of leadership. Plus, he really wants to be here which is always a good sign.

I like the signing. Decent backup depth without being a member of the AARP.

Bruce is a lot like Batch with less of the age and durability factors. He is capable of coming in, managing the game, and helping you win. He is NOT going a 'carry the team on my back'to type QB, but thats not what we need anyway. He is more mobile than Batch, considerably so, I think this is the end of the road for both Byron and Charlie.

Great signing
