Pittsburgh Steelers release veteran OL Willie Colon

The facelift continues in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers are parting ways with another longtime veteran.

NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala, citing a team source, reported the Steelers released offensive guard Willie Colon on Wednesday. Pittsburgh has designated the cut as a June 1 release, clearing $5.5 million off the books and allowing the Steelers to stretch Colon's cap hit over the next two seasons.

This comes one week after Colon's agent, Joe Linta, said the Steelers told him they weren't planning to do anything with Colon's contract and had yet to request a pay cut. Colon has started 62 games for the Steelers over seven seasons.

The 29-year-old lineman has struggled with injuries and started just 13 games over the past two years after signing a five-year, $29 million deal in 2011. Pittsburgh has injected youth into their offensive line, and the team feels good about David DeCastro and Kelvin Beachum inside.

Colon now hits the street as an unrestricted free agent, but he shouldn't have trouble finding work. When healthy -- and that hasn't been often of late -- he's a versatile lineman who brings experience at multiple positions along the line.

The move also means the Steelers will create $5.5 million in salary-cap space after June 1.

That will push $4.3 million -- known as "dead money" -- into cap accounting in 2014

A smart cut - can't pay a player who can't stay healthy.

Considering the dead money this created for 2014, I can't see this being for any other reason then to sign Keenan Lewis to a long-term deal (which I personally wouldn't) or to sign a FA

Wow no more 2nd and 20s or 3rd and long? I don't think I can bear listening to another game without hearing "holding #74/offsides #74", that is when he played of course. Sorry Willie, wish you well, but you won't be missed by this fan.

I saw at lunch time on TV that Peyton Hillis and Beanie Wells are meeting with Pittsburgh this week.

I always liked Hillis. I would be excited about that, personally.

Hillis is a glorified Fullback that can only run North - South.

let's not forget that Colon turned down a better offer from Chicago a few years back and gave Pittsburgh a discount. Sorry it didn't work out, but too many injuries and penalties. I wish Colon would have worked out, he was a nice mauler to have in Pittsburgh.

For a 4th rounder from a nowhere school, we got a few good years out of him.

another reason - the $5.5M we get back for him on Jun 1 can go to sign our draft picks, don't have to sign them til later

After signing our new back-up QB today we only have about $2M left in cap space according to all the reports I'm seeing

It does suck how we did him. Bouchette wrote about it and he did take 5mill less to stay in Pitt!

Beanie Wells... meeting with Pittsburgh this week..

Looks like Bengals passed...

On Tuesday, former Cardinals running back Beanie Wells visited the Bengalsí facility. Wells, cut by Arizona on Monday, is apparently exploring other options

Per beat writer Kent Somers, the Cardinals were "not optimistic" about the state of free agent Beanie Wells' right knee.

True.

But, at the same time, he received a ton of money for playing in only thirteen games during the past three seasons.

Ah right! Now I can postpone my colonoscopy.

Just thought of something. It would have been a great tag for a pancake block delivered by Big Willie. Too bad he didn't have enough of them.

Best of luck to Willie! Even though he never found his natural position during his time here, he always brought the effort!

Thought there was more benefit to cutting him june 1? I hope this means we sign Keenan Lewis to a cap friendly deal, so we can draft a SS, OLB, FS

Thought there was more benefit to cutting him june 1? it depends... im completely confused on the rule (as are alot of the "professional" talking heads). i thought if we cut him after june 1. we got to spread the cap hit for his bonus amongst 2013 and 2014.

now reports say if we woulda kept him until june 1 the entire cap hit of his bonus woulda counted to this year (which does actually make more sense).

so it can be beneficial either way depending on your specific cap situation for this year vs next.

teams who are severely under the cap (teams like the browns, bungles, and tampa bay) wanna absorb as much as possible this year as opposed to pushing it into the future, just to hit the cap ceiling "floor".

teams like us are kinda desperate to clear as much cap space for this season to keep the likes of keenan lewis even if it means pushing even more money into the future.
