The Chiefs announced the release of quarterback Matt Cassel (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3237/matt-cassel) on Thursday, multiple media outlets said. (The club’s official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/kcchiefs) retweeted a report from a writer for the club’s website saying Cassel had been cut (https://twitter.com/KCChiefs_Reid/status/312209183514701825).)

After a 27-touchdown, seven-interception season for a division-title winning Kansas City club in 2010, Cassel struggled the next two seasons. The Chiefs’ trade for Alex Smith and the signing of Chase Daniel (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5170/chase-daniel) signaled the franchise would be going in a different direction at quarterback in 2013.

Cassel was due to earn a base salary of $7.5 million in 2013.

Cassel, who turns 31 in May, has made 62 career starts; such experience could give him some appeal. The question now is where he lands.

THAT WAS QUICK:

Matt Cassel makes quick move to Vikings

The Vikings knew they needed a better second option at quarterback, so they didn’t want to wait.

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Vikings have apparently secured a deal with former Chiefs starter Matt Cassel.

The pace of the move underlines just how seriously they wanted someone better than Joe Webb behind Christian Ponder, and how much competition there was for Cassel.

After the beating he took in Kansas City, he’s also not the kind of guy who would be bucking for the starting job, old enough to know his role behind Ponder and not create pressure.

4th string then? Or will we go Tebow with him and use him the punt protection unit?

I wouldn't mind Tebow as our H-back/TE.

Well I guess that's one way not to generate a QB controversy, only a few worse than Ponder.

But hey if you have a Peterson, I guess you don't need to be that good, right?

I wish Brady Quinn all the success with the Chiefs under Reid.

Wait Quinn isn't on the team is he? GL small hands Smith.
