I have...He basically had Van Gundy pushed aside so he could have the chance at another title...I think Riley realized that he had all the pieces of the puzzle with this team. Now he's coming back for another run at another title. He's footballs Barry Switzer.

I remember that was the speculation at the time..... That Riley forced Van Gundy out.

Has anyone actually spoken about what happened on the record since? I don't follow the Heat enough to know if the team actually improved or not under Riley. Course, didn't Riley happen to take over right about when Shaq came back? Kinda hard to gauge the coaching effect then.

I just look up Van Gundy on wikipedia. This entry was classic. Must be tough to be in Ron Jeremy's shadow...

Van Gundy is often the subject of jokes (especially by radio personality Jim Rome) for his striking resemblance to porn actor Ron Jeremy, and for being a fan of American Idol and Laguna Beach.

You have to have respect for someone before they can lose it.

Van Gundy left for personal reasons early in the 05/06 season and Riley took over from there.

05/06 was Shaq's second season with Miami. Riley was (and probably still is) the team's VP of basketball operations so he was responsible for bringing Shaq there.

I hope this clears up some of the fog.

he has had the same hair do for 30 years - if he changes it up a bit -- I will respect him more
