Lets not forget the Pens tightened up their D, they brought pucks out more instead of trying to float them past the Offence. Kennedy and Vitale brought speed to the game last night!

Kennedy and Vitale brought speed to the game last night!

I was more-impressed with those players' tenacity, and refusal to lose puck-battles both along the wall, and in the open-ice

they were determined to make it difficult for Bylsma to refuse them a sweater in future games

I loved it when Martin drew the other Martin into the roughing penalty. That was like a whole different Pens team last night. That's what I've been waiting for this series. The boys came out to play, finally. Now let's keep it up through the rest of the playoffs.

one game at a time

Vokoun is the Isles killer - bout time management over-ruled Bylsma and listened to me instead.

and I told you Vitale would bring a spark to this team - speed kills - Tk had a great game too - glad Mario followed my advice to put Iginla on Sid's line and finally force changed Disco's line of Iginla on Malkin's LW and put Kunitz back where he belonged.

Shero just called me The Hockey Genius.

Who do you guys start after the Isles, though? I guess you have to go with the hot hand in Vokoun, assuming he continues to stand on his head like he did last night.

Sid's goal was unbelievable too.

There is no doubt in my mind we lose that game with Fleury in net

As for "the team played better yesterday" argument, Vokoun faced a barrage in the 1st, including an Okposo breakaway. If Fleury were in, his play in the series so far suggests we'd have started the 2nd down a couple. At least.

Unfortunately, I think Bylsma will still go back to him at the first sign of an underwhelming showing from Vokoun. I just don't want to think about that right now.

Meanwhile - Go Leafs!

Rangers/Caps is a toss up

First and foremost BRAVO Islanders. You were a worthy opponent. If those guys ever get a good goalie (or if Nabokov can ever return to past form) they'll be formidabe as all hell. Even as is, they could be ready for a Pens-like run of success (remember when the Pens fell to Ottawa, only to make the next two Cup Finals? Shades of that).

Second most importantly: The Pens CANNOT play like that and expect to beat the Sens. The vets (heck, Iginla and Morrow are ex-Captains!) need to light a fire in/under this team. The Pens must play playoff hockey---nobody is scurred right now.

Probably gotta stick with Vokoun at this point. The goals he's allowed have been defensive breakdowns as opposed to goalie blunders.

Thank God Bylsma put TyKe in. That kid is money.

Good to see a motivated Geno.

Is James Neal alive?

Scared to death of Craig Andersen.

That was a huge win for them. Not only do the Pens shake off the terrible losses of the past two years, but they finally get that Islanders monkey off their back.

Agreed. I think they just needed to shake off that first round too. It seemed to really be haunting them. Hopefully their nerves have settled a bit now.

This. WIth the way that the Pens were playing last night, I just wasn't very confident. Going into OT, I was just hoping that our veterans would pull it off for us again. Way to go Orpik!

Hopefully the team comes out firing against the Senators. I agree that I think Bylsma needs to stick with Vokoun still. There were a few close calls, but he blocked a ton of shots last night.

Sens play a completely different style.

I watched a lot of their games - Sens played that "rope a dope" style against the Habs - they were hemmed in their end for endless periods of time in their series. Habs just didn't have any scorers left, they all got hurt. If you think we had trouble with clearing the zone and turnovers wait till you see their big sloppy slow/mistake prone D men. I have a hard time being pessimistic, Sens don't have the firepower to keep up like the Isles and their PP sucks.

I agree the Sens play a completely different game, they always go for the stretch plays looking for that big break away, but still the Pens need to work on the turnovers. Last nights game i think was the worse one i seen so far....

Fire Haley
05-12-2013, 03:09 PM
yeah, they still played sloppy - and won

I look at it this way - the Pens were good enough to win 4 games to 2 against the Isles even with a spastic headcase goalie starting 4 games.

Vokoun didn't need to be the best goalie out there, just not the worst.

The Isles won two games because Fleurys' bumbling goaltending scored as many goals as the Islander players did.

The Penguins won two games by scores of 5-0 and 4-0, so they can still dominate anyone at any time.

It's true the Pens matched up poorly against the fast Islander wingers, especially on the road, but their lazy play and turnovers helped the Isles more.

The Ottawa series won't be easy, it will certainly be physical, but the Penguins will be fine

Hmm. So basically (and all in theory) they need Andersen to pull a J.S. Giguerre/Jaro Halak/J. Quick and steal a couple games?

Bruins’ Airplane Issue Forces Team To Travel To Boston On Morning Of Game 7

BOSTON (CBS) — As if losing Game 6 to the Maple Leafs didn’t make Sunday night a tough enough experience for the Boston Bruins, they learned shortly after the loss that they wouldn’t be able to make it home.

“Late during tonight’s game we were made aware that there was a malfunction with our airplane,” Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement. “As a result we are staying in Toronto on Sunday night and the team will travel to Boston on Monday morning.”

Ottawa Senators to open Round 2 series in Pittsburgh Tuesday night

The Senators are headed to Steeltown, U.S.A. this afternoon.

League sources confirmed to the Sun the Senators will play Game 1 of their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Consol Energy Center. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night also in Pittsburgh.

The NHL was waiting for the result of Game 7 vs. the Leafs and Bruins before finalizing the schedule. The Senators have had a good break and will board their Air Canada charter this afternoon for the short flight to Pittsburgh.

Vokoun will be in net tonight.

VOKOUN STARTING IN GOAL
Tomas Vokoun confirmed to the media that he will be the starting goaltender for the Penguins in Game 1 tonight.

"Itís great to be starting," he said following morning skate. "I wasnít sure after the game if they were going to come back to (Marc-Andre Fleury) or not. Iím trying not to get too caught up in that. If the coaches tell me Iím playing, Iím playing. If Iím not playing, Iím going to try and help the team other ways to win the game. For me, itís just trying to keep it even keel and not get too excited about stuff. The only thing that matter is if we get the W at the end. I think that goes for all the guys, here."

Vokoun said he still has nerves, though they have improved slightly from the last series. But there's still hours until the puck drops and he will be ready to play come 7:30 p.m.

"Itís a little bit better," he said. "But itís a long way from the game yet. When youíre on the ice, youíre not thinking about stuff like that. Itís not so bad right now."

Itís not so bad right now."

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=670529&navid=DL|PIT|home

I was hoping that they would stick with Vokoun. If he starts struggling, then I support a change back to MAF. I just don't want Dan taking too long to make the decision again.

Killer, text Dan with your suggested lines for tonight.

I think it's good that we're starting Vokoun over Fleury, kinda sends that message that getting his job back won't be easy and when he does play, he needs to play better to keep his job

I've already turned in my line-ups

Dupuis-Crosby-Iginla
Kunitz-Malkin-Neal
Morrow-Sutter-Cooke
Adams-Vitale-Kennedy

I think a non-shutout is better for the Pens... especially in game 1. I think the 5-0 game 1 against the Islanders made the Pens underestimate them. There have been some great opportunities for the Sens and I think that one of them getting in the net will let the Pens know Ottawa CAN score and won't just roll over for them.

Just like I predicted, Sens gone to the full rope a dope style, trap all game long, all defense and hope career back-up Anderson makes all the saves.

Take the lead, score a couple goals and they're done...they're one of the worst scoring teams in the league.

Sorry guys, been out of town for the last 5 days.

Way to go Pens last night! Nice to see them start the series with a W on a high note. I was impressed with the way they responded after allowing Ottawa to tie the game at 1. They need to keep pushing the tempo and being physical with the Senators to have success in this series. They are a different club than the Islanders. Craig Anderson is a legit goalie, where Nabokov and Poulin are not as good, IMO. This tells me the offense might want to show up in as many games as possible. I doubt we can beat Ottawa in 3-2, 2-1 games, unless either Fleury or Vokoun play marvelous. I'm not too confident about that one.

Let's Go Pens!!

Senators hope their ‘stage fright’ is behind them

PITTSBURGH – Well, that could have gone better.

The Senators dropped their second round opener to the Penguins 4-1, with plenty of blame to go around, but the Senators wisely tipped their caps to a superior Penguins team on the first night.

The good news? Ottawa’s band of rookies now knows how it feels to face Sidney Crosby and friends in a playoff setting.

“If we had any kind of stage fright or youthful jitters, that should be behind us and now it’s up to us to make it a series,” said Senators head coach Paul MacLean.

MacLean said the youth of his team was a factor in the first period, and that was certainly evident on a Jared Cowen-Eric Gryba mishap that led to Pittsburgh’s second goal, by Evgeni Malkin. Gryba later left the game due to an injury and there was no update on his “upper body” issue.

The coach was frustrated that when Ottawa dominated much of the second period, it didn’t produce any goals to go with it.

Defenceman Erik Karlsson had the best line to describe the Cowen giveaway and Gryba coverage issue.

“We want to come out of our end with the puck, but you know, sometimes shit happens,” Karlsson said.

I missed most of the game because I was at my daughter's softball game. I kept up with it on my phone and received alerts whenever a goal was scored. By the time I made it home, there was about 14mins left in the 3rd. So I watched what was left. I realized this morning that my son has a baseball game Friday night. I love my kids, but their sports are killing my playoff hockey watching! Their baseball/softball seasons end next week though.

Dupuis is still on fire! Even rang up a short handed goal.

Game 2 is HUGE for the Penguins, IMO. Going up 2 games on Ottawa would really put them in a bind. We couldn't do it to the Islanders, and still won the series. But if we can pull it against the Sens, given how the Pens have been clutch on the road - and been able to respond - I think that might get inside the Sens' heads. I believe this is something Bylsma should be preaching to his team, that if they come out and give another full 60 minutes, they'll be in great position up 2-0, able to revamp their confidence, and put a lot of pressure on Ottawa.

Pens captain Sidney Crosby can throw 'em

http://storage.canoe.ca/v1/dynamic_resize/sws_path/suns-prod-images/1297416724026_ORIGINAL.jpg?quality=80&size=420x

PITTSBURGH - If Jason Spezza looks good in practice and is still pain free, how can anyone know if he's not ready to play in a game before he plays in a game?

"I don't think that's any of your business," Senators coach Paul MacLean said with a smile (we think) behind the walrus moustache when asked Wednesday if the decision for Spezza to remain on the sidelines is currently in the hands of the player or the team's medical staff. "That's internal."

Fair enough.

"Practice is practice," said Chris Neil. "There's not the physical contact there is in an intense playoff game. In playoffs, you get it. I'm going for a line change with Sidney Crosby (Tuesday) and he cross-checks me three times. That's the bumps and bruises you've got to be ready to take and endure in a seven-game series."

And Spezza, someone has deemed, isn't yet ready.

To backtrack, where does Crosby get off laying the lumber to Ottawa's tough guy anyway? Does he think he's protected by A) that football helmet he's wearing over his just-mended jaw, or B) the muscle of teammate Deryk Engelland or C) the unwritten rule that enforcers don't punch out skilled players?

The answer is D) none of the above.

Crosby is as competitive as he's talented, and he knows he can handle himself.

This is not to suggest there is any chance Crosby will fight in his current state, but chew on this interesting conversation with Penguins defenceman Matt Niskanen, one of the five victims the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Crosby has claimed in his six NHL fights.

The date was Nov 3, 2010 and Niskanen, now Kris Letang's blue line partner, was with the Dallas Stars.

"First day I got here, we had a good laugh about it," said the 6-foot, 209-pounder who was obtained by the Penguins, along with James Neal, for Alex Gologosky in one of the most one-sided trades of all time. "We've talked about in front of the group of guys several times, told the story of the conversation that went on before the fight happened."

Was it X-rated?

"It was actually pretty civil," said Niskanen. "That game we were thumping them pretty good, and being pretty physical. Sid was pissed off, obviously. He came up to the draw, stood next to me, and I had no idea what was going on, I wasn't ready for it. He said, 'Hey, you ready to go?' and I kind of look at him, and said 'Are you serious?' I'm thinking geez, that's Sidney Crosby. What's he want with me?

"He's like, 'Yeah, we're going to go.' And I said 'OK.'

"For some reason, they didn't drop the puck for awhile. I asked him, 'Are you taking your helmet off, or no?'

"He's like, 'I don't know, what do you think?' Then the puck dropped, and we go.

"He didn't have anything against me, or the other way around. It's just the way it went down. He was trying to create momentum for his team."

Did the buckets come off?

"No, we just dropped the gloves and started throwing," said Niskanen.

How long did it last?

"It was pretty fast and furious .. 20 seconds maybe," continued Niskanen, who said not to even bother checking out the hockeyfights.com voting, (which we later did anyway).

"It's pretty unanimous that I lost that one. I went for a bomb early in the fight, connected hard ... with his helmet ... and then I was off balance and he rag-dolled me pretty good. He didn't hurt me with any punches, but he was throwing me around like I was a little kid." Strong boy, that Sid.

"I don't think anybody wants him doing that a lot, but he's strong enough and more than capable enough to hold his own.

Bobby Orr used to be the same way. Too good to fight, but a good fighter when he felt the need.

"You typically don't want a guy like that doing it," said Niskanen. "Something could happen, you could break your hand on a guy's helmet, or fall and hit your head, or separate a shoulder ... that happens. So you don't really want him doing it, but in the heat of the moment, it's going to happen. Maybe once a season, or once every other season ... for a guy like that."

Niskanen has also only been in six NHL fights, but he says that was his "most famous" one.

"I'll tell the grandkids about it someday," he said with a chuckle.

Me too. I hope the Penguins come out and bring it like they did in Game 1. Taking control early I think is a big key for them. In a couple of the games in the first round, the Pens came out and the Islanders pushed them around. This led to NY scoring early and grabbing the momentum. Pens can't sit around and play defense, give up scoring chances, and tons of shots. That's a recipe for disaster. They have to be the aggressor like they were in Game 1.

Agreed. I think last night's game was one of those where the final score was closer than what happened in the game. Pens dominated on the ice, but gave up goals at inopportune times, keeping Ottawa in the game. Vokoun wasn't really tested too much, but he made key saves to keep the lead. Nonetheless, a win is a win. I'm interested to see how the Senators will respond in the first 5 minutes of Game 3 in their building. There is no excuse in giving up a short handed goal with under a minute to play. Thats pathetic. The Pens could have had a demanding 3 - 0 lead in the series which pretty much would have put this series away, because I could not see the Pens losing 4 in a row. They gave that game away last night and let the Sens back in the series. Time to get their sh!t together, pick up the physical play ( but be smart about it ), score some goals and put this series away.

It's time to overcome some adversity, boys. I agree the Pens should have wrapped up the game. I'm interested to see what kind of mental toll this may or may not take on the team. The first five minutes of Game 4 should tell us something. What team comes out? Do they exert a lot of energy and continue the physicality with Ottawa? Or do we see a "hangover" from the double-OT?

I want to point out the Pens are fortunate Game 4 is not until Wednesday. The extra day off might be enough (hopefully!) to kill any momentum Ottawa gained from this game.

Yep, Ottawa was bound to get one sooner or later. The Pens almost gave away Game 2 and they finally gave one away that was last night. IMO Game 4 is critical. Take the Cup, beat the Blackhawks. Be the best, leave no doubt.

Penguins notebook: Morrow leaves practice with injury

OTTAWA — Penguins coach Dan Bylsma is refusing to divulge any information pertaining to injuries during the postseason, but evidence suggests that something is physically impairing left wing Brenden Morrow.

The veteran left Tuesday's practice early at Scotiabank Place and later walked past a group of reporters with the team's head trainer, Chris Stewart, by his side.

Morrow is believed to be dealing with an upper-body injury, though it is believed he will attempt to play in Game 4 against the Senators on Wednesday.

Boston is clearly more physical and appears to be more focused since the scare vs. Toronto.

For now though, they can focus on closing out the Sens at home. It's been a GREAT series for them.

Pens will unveil even bigger TV screen for fans in Game 5

By Jerry DiPaola
Published: Thursday, May 23, 2013, 12:15 p.m.
Updated 45 minutes ago

The Big Screen, apparently, wasn't big enough.

The Penguins said Thursday they will erect a new 27-foot by 15-foot Trib Total Media Big Screen that will be 11-feet wider and 6-feet taller than the previous one. It will be operating in time for Friday's Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series for fans who don't have tickets inside Consol Energy Center.

The high-resolution LED screen, which has been part of Penguins playoff hockey since 2008, will be set up in a parking lot at the corner of Centre Avenue and Mario Lemieux Place on the former site of the Mellon Arena.

All Penguins playoff games are available on the screen, which is part of the interactive FedEx Ground Fan Zone, featuring live entertainment, promotions, giveaways and playoff rally towels. The Fan Zone and Big Screen area is open four hours before home games, two hours before road games.

Appears the Pirates are following the playoffs:thumbsup:

It was hard to tell whether the Pittsburgh Pirates were heading on a road trip or getting ready for a Stanley Cup playoff game after beating the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Thursday for their fourth straight win.

All of the Pirates' players and coaches wore Pittsburgh Penguins' replica jerseys as they got ready to embark on a road trip to Milwaukee and Detroit. The Penguins even sent a custom-made No. 13 sweater to manager Clint Hurdle.

The Penguins lead the Ottawa Senators 3-1 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal.

"There's nothing much like playoff hockey," Hurdle said. "We're just getting into the spirit."

Utility infielder Brandon Inge took things one step farther before the game, arriving in the Pirates' clubhouse dressed in a full hockey uniform and rollerblades.

"It's something fun, something to change things up a little bit during a long season. Plus, we've got to support our boys," said Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, a Pittsburgh-area native.

It's probably less to do with depth and more to do with style.

Boston, Chicago and L.A. could mosdef hang with the Pens in a seven game series.

Chicago and L.A. can score.

Boston and L.A. have great goalies.

All three could play physical 'playoff hockey' long enough to slow down the Pens.

It's hard to count out Detroit after what they've done and they can do all three of those things on some level.

The Pens are still the favorite, but they shouldn't expect to run away with anything.

"What are you supposed to say? That we're not all in?
Yeah, we're all in. We want to win." - - Ray Shero

Like the Bruins, the Penguins are big and bad.

That is no accident.

Those marvelous moves by Penguins general manager Ray Shero from late-March to early-April — trades for wingers Brenden Morrow and Jarome Iginla, defenseman Douglas Murray and forward Jussi Jokinen — were made with an eye toward a best-of-seven showdown with an opponent of shared playoff attributes and acumen.

An opponent like the Bruins, whose reputation as bruising bullies cloaks their collective skill, just as the Penguins' collection of shining scorers shadows their team toughness.

“The toughness they bring to our group is not fighting,” Shero said. “It's taking a punch, sacrificing to get to the net, getting run over without retaliating. That veteran experience kind of toughness is what you need, and all those guys have brought that.”

Two positives I see out of this.

1. The Penguins continue to get some rest - NEVER a bad thing in the playoffs. Morrow's arm (even though he played in Game 5) can heal back to full strength. Penguins also have a chance to practice and hone their skills on what they need to do against Boston.
2. The series will start on the weekend which is always nice.
