yeah, tired of hearing how Boston will be the team to outhit the Pens

every team Pens play tries to outhit them, it doesn't matter when the pucks are going in the back of their net

Pens got a scare from the Isles because they had speed to match us, something Boston can't bring every shift.

Boston is old. They're slow. They're physical, I'll give 'em that, but they can't keep up with the Penguins. All I've been hearing in the playoffs so far is how deep the Bruins are and what that depth will do for them down the stretch. Uh, I think everyone is forgetting that the Penguins have more depth on their first two lines than Boston has on their entire team. I won't even get into their third and fourth lines who could probably be a second line on most other teams.

I'm not a huge Penguins fan, or a fan at all, but I hate the Bruins. Go Pittsburgh and make this thing quick.

Shelly Anderson @pgshelly
Crosby: "They're letting a lot go out there, and the more it gets like that, the more it’s going to escalate. You can only control and channel that stuff so much. You keep letting guys do that stuff, you’re just going to push the envelope. That’s something we obviously want to stay away from, but it’s kind of a natural thing when it gets like that. It was just hard to gauge. Interference calls where you barely catch a guy, and then you’re allowing punches to the head. Are we going to play, or are we going to call those little things once in a while? It’s hard to get a temperature on the game when that stuff is going on. Then you let a few of those go and everything starts getting out of hand. We’ve just got to focus on playing." #Penguins

That's why I wasn't terribly surprised with last nights outcome, and why I didn't want the west to take so long wrapping up their series. A whole week off was a complete momentum killer.

3 posts (Crosby, Kunitz, and the third one was Malkin I think?) last night sucked too. Pens started off playing really well, but the combination of Crosby hitting a post, the absolutely bullshit call on Cooke (boarding minor at most), and weak goal by the Bruins just killed the game early on. I had no real confidence in the game after that.

I fully expect them to pick themselves up though and play much better from here on out. I just think the long wait and bad luck was just against them last night.

instead of coming out trying to be "tough guys" and "hit" the Bruins all night - the Pens need to forget that and get back to doing what they do best - be the high-flying scoring team they are.
They played right into the Bruins hands. Their shooting was downright awful last night and all the breakaways back toward the Bruins goal looked weak (at best) with the Bruins constantly getting their sticks on the puck during every fast break. It got to the point when we started skating back to score, i already knew the Bruins would get their sticks in there and kill it off.

They better bring the real team in Monday night or they're going to lose this series. They completely lost their composure and tempers got the best of everyone while the Bruins were laughing at us.

Was it just me or when both teams were at full strength did it look like their was at least 9 Bruins on the ice compared to our 5? Sheez.........

PENGUINS AIM TO BOUNCE BACK IN GAME 2 AGAINST BRUINS

(Sports Network) - The top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins will try to rebound from a poor showing in the opener of the Eastern Conference finals when they host the Boston Bruins in Game 2 tonight at CONSOL Energy Center.

Track all the action, chat and get updates from TSN's hockey personalities with TSN.ca's Game Night blog in the TSN GameTracker, tonight at 8pm et/ 5pm pt.

"It's just one game," Vokoun said. "It's a best-of-seven series. We're going to regroup."

Crosby was held without a point for just third time in 11 playoff games this spring, but he was able to draw some positives from Game 1.

"We played with a lot of speed and generated a lot. I think we're pretty confident if we play that same way the pucks will go in for us," Crosby admitted. "We hit the post and had some pretty good chances. We had some bounces and unfortunately they didn't go our way."

I'm not surprised Boston fans are whining about Cooke...they'll do that forever. That game misconduct was absolute shit though. I don't typically like complaining about the refs, because bad calls and missed calls happen every game (and the Pens had plenty of opportunity to overcome them)...but that was a ridiculous display Saturday.

3. The Maple Leafs should have finished off the B's. This series shouldn't even be.

I hope I'm wrong, and they can turn this game around, but they aren't exactly giving out a lot of hope tonight..

I'm with you. This is just awful. It is like we lost all ability to play with the week off. We went from looking so well against Ottawa to being shell shocked against the Bruins. Now I know that Boston is a much better team, but come on..

Love the gameplan so far:

Turn the puck over and give up odd man rushes and breakaways? CHECK

Keep missing the net with shots? CHECK

Inability to clear your own zone? CHECK

I mean, this gameplan worked so well last time, might as well do it again

It took them one week to completely forget how to play hockey.

I've been yelling at my tv about the total inability of the team to pass. It is just crazy. They pass to the Bruins players constantly or just flat out can't hold onto the puck when they need to. I'm over it. This is how they played when we lost to the Islanders.

LOL - reporter just asked Bylsma what he was thinking with the line combinations

Disco panics, 'Let's see, I'll take Bennett out.....use my supersecret weapon of a Glass-Malkiin-Adams line'

Shero and Mario better send a message down that Dan is on the hotseat, along with his goalie.

If anybody else but Vokoun starts every game from now on Bylsma should be fired immediately - get his worthless ass out of town and take that spastic headcase goalie with him.

I wanna see Mario and Shero come down outta the booth and into the locker room and take turns screaming at Bylsma in front of the team, then send Fleury down to the minors. I've never been this mad over a hockey game before.

Bylsma prepares his team like they are robots, they play with no passion in the playoffs......We'll just "play our game" and everyone will fall at our feet in awe.

That's his only plan. Arrogance. Teams that aren't intimidated by this ruse attack his non-existant defensive strategy and win.

Since that was not a charter flight I was surprised the pilot took that shot - Jet Blue presumably has (had?) some Pittsburgh fans as customers too:noidea:

Pittsburgh media has picked up the snarky comment

JetBlue even sent out a tweet of their own, saying “Gotta love Boston based pilots!”

Pens fans, don’t seem to be as amused. Some tweeting to the airlines that they should issue an apology. Others threatening to never fly the airline again.

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2013/06/04/jetblue-pilot-makes-jab-at-penguins-star-sidney-crosby/

Pittsburgh International Airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny said she hopes Pens fans don't boycott JetBlue, as some suggested on social media.

“It was a wisecrack that the pilot probably thought would stay within the cabin,” she said. “Everything grows legs and takes off these days.”

JetBlue has struggled against competition in the Pittsburgh market since arriving seven years ago. It eliminated flights to New York in February but last month added a fourth daily flight to Boston, the only city it serves directly from Pittsburgh.

Just show up and play your game!

NO!!!!

that's Disco Dan talkin'.

Show up and play team defense, like a real championship contender would.

When "our game" means you are constantly trying to push forward all the time with 50 ft stretch passes, even from deep in your own zone, that's what leads directly to the sloppiness, the breakdowns, and the turnovers.

Vokoun was right when he said the Pens are too worried about scoring goals and not enough about playing defense. He put the blame on the team's attitude. I agree.

Fire Haley
06-05-2013, 08:29 AM
Vokoun tells it like it is...

“They are too good of a team to try to outscore. They're not going to let you do that. Every time we beat them this year, it was a tight-checking game. We were going to use a 1-0 or 2-1 mentality. We didn't do a very good job of staying focused tonight.”

Vokoun believes too many Penguins are attempting to win the game on their own. Some teamwork, he believes, could go a long way as opposed to individualism.

“We've got to change our mindset,” he said. “Play differently. We have to stay focused on our game plan. That means you play for 60 minutes. Unfortunately, we gave up the first goal in both games. At that point, everyone tries to do it on their own. That just doesn't work.”

Thank you again! So sick of this "Play your game" crap. Stretch passes are what I do in video game hockey it doesn't work in the real game. Dan Bylsma has never really had what you would call a "system" it's just pond hockey. If the Pens don't get to the final I really don't know how you don't get rid of Bylsma. I know he has a cup, he's won awards, 1st seed this year but what good is it if you can't win a cup with this good of a team? He's a nice guy and all but I really think he's always been in over his head.

When it goes that late into a game, you know the goal is going to be shitty and it was. It's not impossible to come back from 0 - 3 and with all the offensive firepower the Penguins have, this series isn't over yet. Bringing the series back to Pittsburgh is job one, though.

although the game was a close one and the goaltending was superb - you HAVE to score goals.
They improved in many aspects of their game tonight, but they were still very, very sloppy when controlling the puck and the quality of the shots on goal just wasn't there - the quantity was, but the quality wasn't.
We had dozens of opportunities to score - and didn't - again. I hate the outcome, but Boston deserved the win.

I want to be furious, but sports stopped meaning THAT much to me after the storybook events of 08/09.

A few things of note:
1. The Pens D is terrible, but their refusal to play as a TEAM and constant 'hero hockey' tendencies killed their biggest strength: OFFENSE. Shameful.
2. That said, how many times do the Pens have to fail with 'offense first' tendencies before they realize that such style does not translate into what matters most: playoff success?
3. Tuukka Rask is exactly the kind of goalie teams love to lean on. Props to that man.
4. And props to Boston. This isn't just the Pens 'beating themselves', they're enforcing their will and taking this series by force. If you didn't think they could make this a series you were in denial. They're a talented and tough squad worthy of facing off for Lord Stanley's Cup for the second time in three years.

The Pens will probably do like they did last year vs. the Flyers: take two in a row and then go down on the road in game six. The rest of this series is formality at this point.

Still have Sid. Still have Geno. Still have plenty of supporting talent to try and learn from these recurring mistakes next year.

And, if nothing else, at least we don't root for the Capitals.

So what are they going to do? You can't force a stallion to become a mule. You're not going to trade a stallion for a mule.

Crosby, Malkin power outage dooms Penguins

BOSTON (AP) -- Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had a much easier time explaining what went wrong for Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference finals than he did in breaking through against the Boston Bruins' stingy defense.

''We didn't score,'' Crosby said.

And now the Penguins are headed home.

After Pittsburgh led the NHL in goals during the regular season and finished second in total points, the top-seeded Penguins were eliminated with a 1-0 loss to the Bruins in Game 4 on Friday night.

The defeat capped a stunning sweep by the 2011 Stanley Cup champion Bruins.

''I didn't expect to go out four straight,'' Crosby said. ''But the last couple games, I thought we deserved better. Unfortunately we didn't find a way to regroup after dropping those two at home.''

The high-powered Penguins, boasting former MVPs Crosby and Malkin, managed just two goals in the series after averaging nearly 3 1-2 per game during the regular season.

Crosby and Malkin both failed to record a point in the series.

''When you're this close, obviously you want to get to the finals,'' Crosby said. ''You don't get opportunities like this all the time, so yeah, definitely, it's disappointing.''

Crosby, though, was adamant about one thing: The Penguins had their opportunities - 136 shots overall - but only two slipped past goalie Tuukka Rask, who stopped 53 in a 2-1, double-overtime Bruins victory in Game 3.

''It wasn't a lack of chances,'' Crosby said. ''You could talk about their defensive play, they're patient, they're a good hockey team, but we had our fair share of opportunities. We either had pucks hop over our sticks or hit posts or didn't execute for different reasons.

''(Rask) is part of it, but there is a number of things we'll look back on and know we could have been better.''

Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma didn't shy away from crediting Rask.

''There's no question that the performance he put in in this series was elite,'' he said. ''He was the difference in the series, there is no question.''

For all their firepower and flashy play, the Penguins couldn't deliver as they had during the regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs.

They finished the series 0 for 15 on the power play after scoring on 24.7 percent of their advantages during the regular season, and 28.2 percent through the opening two rounds against the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators.

''Maybe because our power play didn't score a goal. That was the key to the other series that we went in and capitalized on key moments,'' Pittsburgh forward Chris Kunitz said. ''Sometimes we barely generated energy from our bench.''

Even more mystifying, was the shutdown of Crosby and Malkin, who combined for 31 points in the first two rounds.

''You try to fight, you try to get through to the net and get rebounds, and sometimes they come to you, sometimes they don't,'' Crosby said. ''Obviously, you score two goals as a team in four games, and personally to go without any points, doesn't sit very well.''

It clearly weighed on Malkin, as well.

The Russian star sat slumped over at his stall, his hands covering his face, and his sweaty pads still covering his legs, He accepted his share of the blame.

''We scored two goals in four games. It's not enough,'' he said. ''It is my mistakes that I scored zero goals. It's not good for me.''

Penguins goalie Tomas Vokoun, who was pulled after allowing three first-period goals in a 6-1 home loss in Game 2, was shocked at the outcome.

''You go through the season with a team like we had and it's very disappointing,'' Vokoun said. ''It's a tough moment, and unfortunately for Pittsburgh, only one team can win and that's not going to be us.''

The Penguins hadn't been swept out of the playoffs since 1979, when they also fell to the Bruins. They had been shut out only twice in their previous 147 games.

Boston blanked them twice in this one-sided, four-game whitewash.

''Our team is a team that considers itself a team capable of winning a Stanley Cup, put together to win a Stanley Cup. That's our expectation from Day One,'' Bylsma said. ''No question, you're going to look at this as a missed opportunity.''

The power play had been awesome the entire year, damn near the most deadly I'd seen in a lot of years watching hockey and with the flip of a switch it was a disaster. I cannot wrap my head around a team that's stacked with all the great players, that everyone witnessed chive together so well completely dissolve. I can only come out of this with 2 possibilities, either Bylsma is the worst coach or (as a sports fan I HATE to have the thought in my head) the series was fixed. i don't think it was "fixed" to that point...... But you can BET your a** thats what the commissioner wanted (Bruins to win for the "story") and made that very clear to certain types of supervisors who might wear striped shirts.

Bottom line though - can't skate, can't hold the puck, and can't score - you're not winning any games. This will go down, considering the level of talent here, as one of the worst series performances ever......maybe THE worst. Besides goalie play, i can't name a worse performance.

Yes I agree with you, if the Penguins had laid an egg and they had HORRIBLE calls go against them, then maybe there would have been 'something up'. Not the case though. I thought the officiating was consistent. Penalties were pretty even for both teams. Obviously, a few calls that weren't made but should have, like Crosby getting blindsided last night. But you have to figure the referees aren't going to call everything. That's the game.

Here were 2 differences I noticed.

1. Goaltending -

Tuuka Rask stood on his head the ENTIRE series. Shutting down the NHL's #1 offense in Pittsburgh is quite an achievement. How he did it, I don't know. But because he did it, my opinion about him changed 180 degrees from prior to Game 1 to this very moment. I think he's a good, young goalie. He's got the potential to be great if this is what he can continue to do.

The lack of consistency in net for Pittsburgh hurt them in the playoffs. It was something Boston exposed, particularly in Game 2. Vokoun was pulled and Fleury didn't do much better. To compete with a team like the Bruins, one needs consistent, solid goaltending. I think Vokoun gave all he had, but he just couldn't match Rask, stride for stride. I don't fault Vokoun for losing this series... which brings me to my next point.

2. Defense

Penguins are obviously a team built for scoring. Boston is built for defense. I believe the Pens lack a defenseman who is a "lock down" player like a Chara who can just shut down the other team's stars. Orpik is supposed to be that guy, but I don't think he did a great job containing players like Krejci, Lucic, etc. Letang is more of an offensive defenseman. Murray is big and physical, but not on the same level as Orpik. Further, Julien's system really frustrated Pittsburgh. It was difficult for the Penguins to get to their game in the offensive zone. They are a puck possession team. Boston was all over them and disrupted their efforts with deflections, intercepted passes, etc.

I tip my cap to the Bruins. They played a whale of a series. They defied the odds. Good for them. Whoever they oppose in the Cup Final is going to have their work cut out for them.

OliverPoop

I think we can all agree that the reason the Pens lost this series is that there were not enough stretch passes and the Pens didn't play their game.

IMO this is going to be a really interesting SCF match up. We have a team in Chicago, who, like the Penguins, play a high tempo game and like to score. Sources: Pens’ chairman Lemieux may order ouster of coach Bylsma

The call on Dan Bylsma’s future behind the Penguins’ bench may not be Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero’s to make.

Several individuals within the industry have told Slap Shots Penguins chairman Mario Lemieux, distressed by his team’s fourth straight failure to get out of the Eastern Conference after consecutive trips to the Finals in 2008 and 2009, the latter culminating with a Stanley Cup victory, may instruct Shero to dismiss the coach.

There already is chatter out of Pittsburgh about how the Penguins failed to “adapt” or “adjust” to the Bruins in the Eastern finals sweep — during which they never held the lead, were limited to two goals overall and were shut out on the power play. All those areas generally are the purview of the coaching staff.

Someone likely is to pay for the debacle that followed a series of moves at the trade deadline in which Pittsburgh sacrificed four draft picks and three prospects to acquire rental properties Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray, not one of whom came close to making a difference once the Penguins stepped up in class.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury all but certainly will become someone else’s reclamation project following a fourth straight subpar playoff performance and second consecutive tournament meltdown.

Hawks figured out how to score on Quick, against LA's defense - I don't think Boston will scare them.

True about the Kings. IMO Boston's defense is superior to LA's. Chara is an animal, Boychuck played well against us, and Chicago's starpower won't impress them. If Boston can shut us down, I don't see why they can't beat Chicago. I think the Penguins are a better offensive team than the Blackhawks. Only difference I think is the 'Hawks can play defense and they have a goalie who is playing well in Crawford. But I can tell you that Rask better be on his game like he was versus the Pens if the Bruins are going to emerge victorious.

Bylsma: Bennett will be a top-six forward, Despres a top-four defenseman next season. #TribHKY

So you had a top 4 defenseman and a top 6 forward sitting in the pressbox for most if not all of the playoffs

brilliant!

Sounds like typical coach talk. He can't say "well, our two superstars underachieved and we had two guys in the press box because they were hurting us every time they were on the ice" because that would be throwing your guys under the bus. He handled it pretty well I thought.
