Who do you think is a band or musician that doesn't get nearly enough recognition?

Post a song/video here and/or a little bit about them.

I'm eagerly anticipating the band Baroness coming in concert to Ram's Head Live in Baltimore, MD May 25th. They only have 3 albums out so far, but their latest is one of the best albums I've purchased in the last 5 or more years IMHO. Check 'em out!

depends on what you mean by underappreciated. A great artist is always going to have fans that think they're great, and the more obscure they are usually the more vitriolic the reaction they get from their fans. So I'll just assume this is talking about artists who don't get the main stream attention they deserve.

Yes, bands that should be huge, but maybe only have an underground following and don't get mainstream airplay. Most bands worth their salt are appreciated in some fashion.

idk, I think Rush has a greater following than the Shins, mostly because of their longevity. Can't help but feel when both bands are done Rush will be more fondly remembered by most.

One from the rap genre. The D.O.C was amazing, but after a car accident crushed his throat (destroying his voicebox), he disappeared.

Even as good as that first album was, very few people have ever heard of him. Everyone knows Eazy, Ice Cube, & Dr. Dre, but when asked about The D.O.C, 99% of rap fans (and no one outside of that community) has ever even heard of him.

If not for that car accident, The D.O.C could have been the original act (of many acts) that Dr. Dre took from anonymity to legendary status: Snoop, 2Pac, Eminem, 50 Cent... but, alas, not The D.O.C.

Awesome!!!

My brother uses The D.O.C as a barometer. He'll ask a person who claims to be a "huge" fan of rap, if they know of The D.O.C... and if they don't, he will shake his head. (LOL)

Likewise, when a young whipper-snapper (who's all about "old school" hip hop) comes around, my brother will say, "Listen up, young buck" and pops in his CD of The D.O.C... and they are amazed.

Went and saw Baroness for the first time last night at Ram's Head Live in Baltimore and they were fucking amazing! I've seen a ton of bands live in my life, but they were easily in my top 3-5 live bands of all time. Right up there with Clutch, The Ramones, Rage Against the Machine, and Tomahawk.

Simply, one of the tightest and most sonically enjoyable bands I've ever seen. They transition from pounding, primal progressive metal to soaring, beautiful melodies and hooks with fluid ease. They seem like an honest and humble group of guys and don't hold anything back.

I highly recommend seeing this band live if you are a fan of heavy metal or hard rock if they come around your area. In fact, I'd give them my highest recommendation.

Ric, not sure if Bowie would qualify as under-appreciated. He's had a rather storied and huge career. Top forty radio hits, awards, sell-outs around the world. This was more for bands/artists that haven't achieved that level of appreciation. Bowie has had the kind of career that most bands that have been listed here could only dream of. I guess what you were saying is that no matter how much he gets recognized, you think he deserves more, which I get.

The other bands you listed fit the mold though. I've never heard of them and will have to check them out. That's what this thread is for... exposing some artists that wouldn't normally get much or any.

Jane, you ignorant $lut. There is no way that Bowie will ever be truly appreciated adequately. Hence, I included him on this list. I do find it odd that you didn't take issue with the ukulele version of an Adventure Time song. I'm not sure that Adventure Time is under-appreciated either... But I like it a lot and thought I'd insert it here.

I've never heard the Adventure Time song actually. Didn't listen to it here yet either. I just knew I hadn't heard of it and commented that it was more likely what we were looking for. :chuckle:

I feel that way about Faith No More. They are a world renowned band that had radio hits and a certain level of popularity, but I feel they will never be fully appreciated as they should. Mike Patton is a God to me.

I liked Faith No More back when. I have very few musical forays into the metal end of things, but them, Queensryche and Queens of the Stone Age are some of the few entries. I mean, don't get me wrong... I listen to Zeppelin, Sabbath and Motorhead regularly, but I don't really dig the rest of it after that, with those notable few exceptions.

All good bands. :drink:

I've been a life-long metalhead since I first discovered Kiss back in the 70's. I'm not sure how "metal" Kiss is these days, but they were my first real exposure. From there it went to bands like Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC, etc and moved on from there to bands like Motörhead, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and so on and so forth. I still count it as my genre of choice even now at 41, but my musical tastes have evolved into quite a wide spectrum of differing musical styles. I like a little of rock, punk, blues, jazz, soul, country, pop, disco, rockabilly, reggae, ska, and so forth. Variety is the spice of life as they say and music should be no exception, I say.

I listen to a little bit of everything. A couple of bands I listen to that don't seem to be quite as well known as I personally think they should be are Black Label Society and Queens of the Stone Age. BLS is metal, and Queens of the Stone Age are an Alternative group. If you guys haven't heard of them and you enjoy either of those genres I recommend checking them out. Been listening to BLS since I was a freshman in high school. Zakk Wylde is in my opinion one of the best guitar players alive. Same story with Queens of the Stone Age.

I do think they qualify as lesser known in my book because I ask friends about either group and very rarely does anyone know about either one of them. While they definitely aren't at local band unknown level, for bigger more mainstream bands they still seem lesser known than they should be.

What? You must have some low standards. Zakk Wylde brought the same formula to every song: play a few notes, then play artificial harmonics. He's easily one of the most overrated guitarists of our generation.

BLS isn't known anymore because Zakk got booted from Ozzy's band.

The dude can shred. That's what he does. He's not the best guitar player in the world by any stretch, but he is great at what he does.

Zakk wasn't booted from Ozzy's band. Ozzy actually encouraged him to go out on his own, because he knew he had his own followers, and that there was nothing more he could do just being "Ozzy's guitarist". Ozzy knew he could insert any competent guitarist into his own band and not miss anything, but he also believed that Zakk had enough of a following and personality to make it on his own.

Have you ever heard any of his stuff from Pride and Glory? That was his side project when he was with Ozzy. It's more of a southern rock feel, but I really like it. Check out some of their stuff.

Ozzy removed Zakk from the band because of his drinking. Gus G. is ten times the guitarist Zakk will ever be. And Randy Rhoads was 100X even that.

I'm not really one for southern rock, but regardless, I can't get into Zakk. His playing was formulaic and uninspired, and his first couple of albums with Ozzy were pretty good, but then he devolved into the "Let's make this MY band" mentality and everything began sounding the same.

His artificial harmonics make my ears bleed.

I couldn't possibly disagree with everything you've said any more than I do now. You assume I have low standards because I'm a BLS fan and it's my opinion that Zakk Wylde is one of the greatest guitar players alive? How ludicrously small-minded of you. Sorry I don't like exactly what you like but I fail to see how you can draw such a conclusion about my musical tastes because I posted about two bands I like on a forum. Look at the two bands I suggested. They're like polar opposites. That should tell you that my tastes in music are rather broad. I listen to everything from Classic Rock, Metal, and Alternative to Dubstep, Country, and Classical music. I try to keep an open mind when it comes to music. I don't fancy myself some type of audiophile tossing about silly terminology like "formulaic", and "artifical harmonics" to make myself seem more musically enlightened than others and then throw out asinine assumptions about the simplicity of other people's musical tastes.

Oh and how dare you Zakk Wylde for wanting to make your own identity and your own music! Don't you know you're supposed to just sit in Ozzy's shadow?

SDMF Berzerker for Life! :tt04:

Yep Zakk's not very good. I suppose that's why he was #18 on Guitar World's Top 100 list. I suppose this isn't very good either

Zakk isn't the best, I'm not saying that. I'd have Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randy Rhoads, and Eddie Van Halen ahead of him. Probably some others as well.

kanye west is seriously the greatest musician of his generation and i fear he will never get the widespread consumer recognition he deserves because so many people hate him. it's sad and ironic, really. yeezus is wonderful though, if anyone cares.

those will probably be in my top five songs of the year. dude is amazing. few artists of his standing in current mainstream music have taken such a drastic approach to an anticipated album in music history. kanye just do what kanye do. it's already getting compared to sgt peppers and kid a for christs sake!

I know they're not the most under-appreciated band...but if we're adding Kanye West and Bowie to the list, the I guess I'd give Blind Melon a mention at least. :chuckle:

Not for everyone, but one of my favorite all time bands. Shannon just melts my heart.

I like maybe one of Kanye's songs but I just can't stand the dude and his GIGANTIC ego. Plus there was that stunt where he accused George Bush of hating black people. He may be musically talented but his ego and sheer ignorance keep me from being able to like him.
