View Full Version : Leaving Facebook

About a month ago, I deactivated my Facebook account and today I have no regrets. My wife and I both did it at the same time because we were both spending way too much time on there. Now, if I want to speak to a friend, I actually have to speak to (or text) him or her. Also, my phone's battery can now last until the end of the day (it's a Motorolla, so the battery sucks anyway.)

Last night, my wife and I were discussing how great it's been and we've decided to stay off of Facebook for good. I would recommend to anyone else who thinks they spend too much time on there to do the same.

Yep.
I've never had a FaceSpace account. Too many of my friends are liking & such... but not interacting.

btw: One of the absolute best episodes of South Park talks about this ("You have 0 friends"). Brilliant.

I'm not quite that old. Although, I was born a curmudgeon... and just grew taller.

Really though, it's more that I'm a luddite. Technology is like a foreign language to me. Woodworking, drawing, painting, and other 18th century skills are more my forte.

I wouldn't be able to go without my Candy Crush. :chuckle:

I've thought about leaving FB before (not because of overuse, but under use). I'm glad I didn't though. I've met some cool people that I never would have met in real life (and probably talk to some of these people more than I do old high school friends). Plus I would miss bullshitting with my Mystie Militia group daily. I've got a nice balance though...I don't have a smartphone, so I'm not checking statuses and updating when I farted or if I'm chilly or whatnot. I do know some people who are a bit obsessed with it though, and would probably break down if they couldn't be on it every 5 minutes.

It was tough at first. Since the FB app was native on my phone, I had to delete the shortcut on my desktop because I'd keep mindlessly opening the app (even though I had already signed out of it). After that, it's been incredibly easy and the only thing I really miss are George Takei's updates.

Good idea J. If you don't make money or do reaearch on the computer everything else is a waste of time. As of now, when I click on FB and don't see any of those red box's in the upper left of the screen, I'm out. Killin' my account is soon to be next.

We'll see. It's just a rumor at this point...but a rumor that Wil Wheaton started on tumblr. His response to an article claiming Chiwetel had 7/1 odds of being the new doctor was this:

"Am I the only person who knows who has been cast as the next Doctor, and who has known this was coming for several weeks? I figured that if it filtered down to me, it must be common knowledge among people who matter.
…now I feel kind of special. Yay me."

Rory Kinnear and Russell Tovey (From UK Being Human) are also being mentioned too....as well as the possibility of a female doctor (Zawe Ashton).

That sounds to me like he's saying they're wrong with that guess. I see Ben Daniels mentioned a lot. Or

Who knows for sure (pun intended). I've even seen Billie Piper and James Nesbitt mentioned. As well as another Being Human star, Damien Molony.

These are the odds that are all being tossed around right now (and even it's incomplete).

To Replace Matt Smith As Doctor Who?: 5/2 Ben Daniels, 10/1 Chiwetel Ejiofor, 10/1 Damien Molony, 10/1 Rory Kinnear, 10/1 Russell Tovey, 12/1 Ben Whishaw, 12/1 James Frain, 14/1 David Harewood, 16/1 Billie Piper, 20/1 Alex Jennings, 20/1 Chris Addison, 20/1 Colin Morgan, 20/1 Paterson Joseph, 20/1 Philip Glenister, 20/1 Rupert Grint, 25/1 Andrew Scott, 25/1 Benedict Cumberbatch, 25/1 David Morrissey, 25/1 Harry Lloyd, 25/1 Hugh Grant, 25/1 Olivia Colman, 25/1 Rhys Ifans, 25/1 Richard Armitage, 28/1 Ian Rheon, 28/1 Martin Freeman, 28/1 Tom Ellis, 33/1 Chris Moyles, 33/1 Alan Davies, 33/1 Damien Lewis, 33/1 James Corden, 33/1 Richard Coyle, 33/1 Tilda Swinton, 33/1 Tom Hiddleston, 40/1 others

I almost spit up at the mention of Hugh Grant. I think I would quit watching if that longshot ever happened lol.

Tilda Swinton would be fun, but that will NEVER happen.

I'm placing my money straight on Russell Tovey or Rory Kinnear, with Tovey being the favorite. I think Chiwetel would be fantastic, but the more I think about how they cast the doctor, I don't think it will be anyone well known.

I use to love doing that.. Nothing like making a nice piece dresser or something useful for your house. I should look into a night class doing woodshop if I wasnt busy surfing the web for steelers info

My last major project was when I drew & painted a jungle for my daughter's nursery. Now that she is here, most of my skills are "wasted" on simply fixing stuff (as opposed to creating stuff).

BUT, do not get me wrong: I'd rather spend my extra time playing dolls & kitchen with my daughter than building stuff. There will be plenty of time for building stuff (when she's a little older). Right now, I try not to miss a minute of the pony & mermaid social hour. (You never get those moments back...)

I have a couple hundred FB friends... but I really only use it to keep in touch with family that's out of state and a core group of 8-10 friends (planning events, etc). With the new baby, it's so much easier to share stuff with that core group.

I've thought of cutting my list down to those peeps, but I do see some funny things come through every once in a while on the feed.

Definitely kudos to you though if it has simplified your life.

It went very well. I was in quite a bit of pain for the first week and a half, but I had plenty of percocet to take the edge off. I'm up and walking around fine now with very little pain. I started PT last week and that's going better than expected. The therapists seem very pleased with my progress.

"The Chocolate Dalmatian"
-late-night carne asada burrito, with sour cream... than had been sitting out a little too long.

"Combat Fatigues"

"Shotgunning the Smurfs"

I don't know if I've gotten hairier since then, or if losing weight has moved my body hairs closer together.

Secondly, both of my dogs hate showers. In our old house, we would have to get in the shower with them since there was no tub, or else they'd make a break for it. Our new house has a tub, so I can sit on the side and wash them. I have no regrets.
