The former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, last signed to the Miami Dolphins, will serve 30 days in jail after violating the terms of his probation in a domestic violence case, The Associated Press reported Monday. Johnson pleaded no contest to allegations of head-butting his former wife, Evelyn Lozada, last August.

It appears a plea deal that called for no jail time could have been reached had Johnson behaved with more respect in court Monday. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh rejected the deal after Johnson slapped his attorney on the butt in a playful manner.

"Is there something funny about this?" McHugh said, according to The AP. "The whole courtroom was laughing. I'm not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn't a joke."

Johnson responded: "This is your courtroom. I have no intent to make this a joke. It's not funny. My life is in a shambles right now, and I try my best to laugh and keep a smile on my face."

Johnson, who also had his probation extended for three months, has made a career out of being the court jester. It sure looks like it cost him Monday.

Did he at least get to wear his Hall of Fame jacket for his induction into prison?

That judge is in a little hot water for over reacting and giving an unfair sentence. The local AG was on the news this morning raising a stink.

Wow. 30 days for slapping your own (male) attorney on the butt. The justice system is a joke when the entire process comes down to the childish ego of a judge and not wanting to have their attention stolen.

Ochocinco receives no time for allegedly headbutting his wife but does receive 30 days for slapping his own attorney on the butt playfully and hilariously (as if the attorney wants his own client in jail).

Fire the judge.

did the judge use her "butch" voice when giving the sentence? I waggled me wig and banged me gavel. I gave him 30 days, he only took 5 minutes. You can put it in the hands of your attorney, but it'll never stand up in court.

Can't believe this, I think the judge totally overreacted. Looked like an ego stroking senseless assertion of power to me. I actually feel a bit bad for Chad.

I agree that a man should never beat on a women, but have y'all done a search on this particular woman? She isn't dealing with a full deck and has been in a number of run ins with the law.

There are other ways of dealing with crazy people that aren't violent in the least. As a football player, Chad Johnson is much bigger and stronger than most people, making it even more deplorable to strike a woman.

I agree and after re-reading my post, I certainly didn't mean to minimize what Chad did. Or domestic violence in general.

end of story

Chad Johnson released from Florida jail after apology to judge

FORT LAUDERDALE (AP) — A contrite Chad Johnson apologized Monday for disrespecting a judge when the former NFL star slapped his attorney on the backside in court last week and was released from jail after only a week instead of 30 days.

harder to have marks when chad's huge and she's small. still doesn't mean it didn't happen or she didn't deserve it. besides, given her past, it's not hard to imagine her getting angry enough to resort to violence.

an absolute animal that one is. some animals need to be hurt to learn. unfortunately this one won't, she's just getting sympathy. stupid decision to get with her

not looking at this from a judicial perspective. from there, you're right. unless he has proof he was wrong according to the law.

She's been a looney forever right. She's been violent before too, right. She's started shit with him before, right. If Chad Johnson is going to put himself in that position over and over again, he is obviously getting something out of the deal, or he is lying about her. WTF is he doing within 100 miles of her if she is such a train wreck, and he has to stay out of trouble? Why are so many willing to give him a pass because they think she's F'd up? He's the one putting himself in these positions. He deserves everything that comes his way.

And for the record. It's never OK to hit, punch, kick, bite, pull the hair of, or headbutt your wife! I would sprint away from her if I had to to avoid doing anything like that. There is a way for this idiot to get out of this bad situation. It's called filing for divorce. It starts with separation. He files and then stays far away from her. This isn't rocket science we're talking about here.

Ocho's wife is definitely no saint, but nobody, man or woman, "deserves" violence.

I kinda figured Chad wouldn't serve his entire 30 day sentence. The judge just wanted to teach him a lesson. Maybe he will show a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T the next time he is in a courtroom, but who knows. He isn't the brightest crayon in the box. He did marry this woman, after all. Yeesh.

In the immortal words of Chris Rock:
"You know what they say, 'There's no reason to ever hit a woman.' Shit! There's a reason to hit everybody. You just don't do it. Shit, there's a reason to kick an old man down a flight of stairs. You just don't do it."

You don't hit a woman. Period.

Want to? Yes. Do you? No.

LOL

It's akin to Lindsey Lohan counting her "bad" days; it's far easier for her to simply count the (one or two) good days per month.
