My son is going into his 2nd yr of college (criminal justice) he used my laptop last yr kinda big and bulky I installed Microsoft office in it. Looking to get him a more light and portable laptop this yr what are the basic or min system requirements I should be looking for I know he wants a DVD drive but I know a majority of ultra books do not have these. My price range is between 500.00-700.00 if possible to stay in that range. Any help would be appreciated.

the inspiron line by dell seems to be what you're looking for. I would recommend you get the i5 model (right at $700 but with tax will come out to a little more). The i3 models would be enough, but i like to get a little more power if it's in your price range, and the i5 is almost every bit as good as the i7 (some gamers actually claim the i5 is faster than the i7 unless you're working with some applications that make good use of hyperthreading, which majority of home users do not).

These models are about 4 lbs and include the dvd drives. if you want to go lighter than 4 lbs then you will have to get one without an optical drive. and order it with windows 7, do NOT get windows 8, it SUCKS (and i mean that in the nicest way possible)

I use HP Laptops for school work/college work, and my cousin who is studying uses a basic HP Windows 8 Laptop w/ DVD Drive for his studies as well. I believe his HP was under $499 at the local Wal-Mart, so it'd be best for you to take a look at some of your local stores for deals. My HP-G62 Laptop has a DVD Drive with DVD Burner.

We might have the same or similar one. I just bought a new HP laptop at Walmart with Windows 8 (I don't know what the letters and stuff are for it :chuckle: )...has DVD drive with DVD burner. Price was $268 (down from $299), and after taxes and insurance I think came to $330 or something around there. Was very well priced.

I did want something a little bit smaller like an ultra book...but the DVD drive was a must for me and none of them had it, so I went with this. It's light and portable enough I would say.

There are 2 Dell's on here from their line of Ultrabooks that have DVD drives, and both are in your price range. Both are 14" or larger though...so at that point you almost might as well save a few hundred bucks and get a cheap HP or Dell laptop from Walmart that has the DVD drive. I'm sure you'll run into the same thing looking at HP or any other brand. Only the larger Ultrabooks will have DVD drives.
