I just watched "A Football Life: Marcus Allen."

I grew up in San Diego & idolized Marcus Allen. Everyone here did. He is the ONLY Raidah that San Diegans have ever rooted for. He's my favorite RB of all time (yes, even more so than Harris or Bettis).

Anyway...

I've always averred that if Al Davis hadn't wasted six seasons (SIX) of Allen 's career, Marcus would hold every single record for running backs. Marcus played fullback for four years, and then sat for most of of the games during those final two years. Six years of next-to-nothing.

Even as it was, Marcus still has over 12,000 rushing yards (twelfth all-time), and over 5,000 receiving yards. He has 123 rushing TDs (third all-time) and 144 total TDs (sixth all-time).

Simply, if during those six seasons, even if he had a measly 5 TDs per year and 500 rushing yards, he would have the most rushing TDs, second most all-purpose TDs, and third most rushing yards. (1,000 rushing yards per year would have put him at the top.)

Ugh. I hate Al Davis.

Always a class guy first. He was also a great player. It's hard not to like Marcus Allen.

Yep... especially his teammates. In 1992, when Al hated Marcus, the Raidahs players voted Marcus the team MVP. (Take that, Al.)

Unless your name is Al Davis.

The truth is.... no one will ever know the truth behind the Al Davis/Marcus Allen "situation". I've heard many stories over the years and I've come to the conclusion that that's exactly what they are... stories. The only person that really knows what happened is Marcus Allen, and he isn't going to talk.

I do know this..... if you were loyal to Al Davis he was as good a friend as you could have. If not..................... well. Marcus did something that didn't sit well with Al, you can be assured of that. I don't condone what Al did to him, considering we could have used him and maybe won another SB or two, but that was just how Al was.

I know it's cool to cast aspersions Al Davis' way over the last decade, but the man was a VERY important part of what we all enjoy as the NFL, today.

Sorry for the little topic run off..... I agree that Marcus was done wrong and would have probably owned numerous records if Al hadn't benched him.................. he was that good.

i was more a fan of bo jackson, but allen always seemed like a class player.

speaking of players who coulda, woulda, and shoulda broke records, bo was possibly the most talented ever at RB (even more so than barry sanders, mainly because a man his size should never be that fast). if only not for injuries.

Longevity/health was Marcus' second most important attribute. Intelligence was his first.
