PHILADELPHIA – Embarrassed Eagles receiver Riley Cooper stood fittingly with his back to a wall outside the team's training complex press room Wednesday night, apologizing for a racial epithet used after a confrontation with an African American security guard working a June 8 Kenny Chesney concert.

Nah - just drunken slobs:wink02:

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The excitement over Kenny Chesney Saturday proved to be a little too much for some people with the night ending with several fights and numerous arrests.

Police say 49 people were arrested inside Heinz field during the concert, with another 24 arrests taking place near the venue on the North Shore. Police say most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct, public intoxication and aggravated assault.

Additionally, police say at least 10 large fights broke out and 150 people were treated for various medical needs. Another 45 people were taken to medical facilities as well.

“The Kenny Chesney crowd is the most difficult crowd for our staff to work with of any of the events of the year,” says Merril Stabile, president of ALCO Parking.

In fact, the Chesney crowd has earned such a reputation that even police were hesitant to face the mess.

“We had a hard time getting police — a lot of police didn’t want to work this event,” Stabile said....

The mess on the North Shore almost defies description and even Monday, you could still smell the remnants of Saturday.

Someone had posted pictures of the lots after the Chesney concert and it was absolutely disgusting. I've been to Ozzfests and other metal shows that didn't even come close to the kind of destruction left behind by Chesney fans. Us metal heads have far more respect for the North Shore and its moderately tolerable conditions. :chuckle:

Looks like a trip to re-education camp is on deck for Mr. Cooper

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday on ESPN Radio that the NFL will not punish Riley Cooper for his use of a racial slur, while the Philadelphia Eagles announced later in the day that the wide receiver would undergo sensitivity training....

"He has accepted responsibility for it. He has spoken to his team. He has been disciplined by the club and will go through some training with the club to understand," he continued.

No doubt. When we had our club, the hip hop nights were always the dirtiest, but they tipped the best (sometimes with more than money lol). The reggae nights were by far the most nasty, but we were so stoned we didn't care. :chuckle:

The metal shows we had, they would be a little dirty, and not tip exceptionally well, but there were always people who felt bad afterwards and stayed to help clean up. Nothing on the scale of a Chesney concert though. I've never seen anything like that in all my concert going days.

But then -

Riley Cooper’s NFL career may not last much longer

Posted by Mike Florio on August 2, 2013, 9:06 AM EDT

The Sports Bad Behavior Double Standard, which gives good players a second chance and makes an example out of scrubs, has its limits. We saw it in June with Aaron Hernandez. And we’re seeing it in August, potentially, with Hernandez’s college teammate, Riley Cooper.

The disconnect regarding Cooper was obvious from the outset of the controversy. Owner Jeffrey Lurie said the Eagles were “shocked and appalled” by Cooper’s use of the worst possible racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert — so shocked and appalled that the Eagles imposed an undisclosed fine on Cooper.

That’s not how it works in non-sports industries. In Cooper’s case, it may not be the last move the team makes.

The buzzword of the 2013 offseason became “distraction.” Gay NFL players stay closeted in part because they don’t want to create a distraction for the team. And no team was interested in trading with the Jets for Tim Tebow and only one wanted to sign him because, thanks to a legion of fans who demand to see him play, Tebow is a distraction.

Riley Cooper, in less than 48 hours, has become a major distraction for the Eagles.

The distraction doesn’t simply come from the outside, with reporters asking everyone in the locker room for their opinion about Cooper — just as reporters will ask everyone in the locker room for their opinion the first NFL player who declares himself to be openly gay. The distraction as to Cooper also comes from within, and it seems to be getting worse, not better.

Ashley Fox of ESPN.com paints a compelling picture regarding the inevitability of Cooper’s exit from the Eagles. On last night’s edition of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN, Tim McManus of 97.5 The Fanatic said that the team may still dump Cooper. Derrick Gunn of CSN Philly explained separately in the show that, if receiver Jeremy Maclin hadn’t torn an ACL over the weekend, Cooper already would be gone.

The Eagles initially erred on the side of keeping Cooper because it’s always better to give your own player the second chance he may find elsewhere — as the Eagles learned the hard way 23 years ago when they gave up on a wideout who’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday night.

In Cooper’s case, the Eagles likely are realizing that’s not a concern. If the only locker room he’s known ends up rejecting him, no other locker room will accept him.

Maybe, in the end, that’s why the Eagles are trying to find a way to move forward. Maybe Lurie, G.M. Howie Roseman, and coach Chip Kelly realize that cutting Cooper won’t pave the way for a second chance with another team. It’ll grease the skids for his permanent exit from the NFL.

Cooper getting a leave of absence from Eagles

Posted by Darin Gantt on August 2, 2013, 12:26 PM EDT

After a wave of apologies for his racist remarks and press conferences and an attempt at a normal day’s work yesterday, the Eagles have decided to let wide receiver Riley Cooper take a break.

The team issued a statement staying he had been “excused him from all team activities” while he’s seeking counseling.

“The last few days have been incredibly difficult for me,” Cooper said in a statement provided by the team. “My actions were inexcusable. The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better.

“Right now, I think it’s important for me to take some time to reflect on this situation. The organization and my teammates have been extremely supportive, but I also realize that there are people who will have a tough time forgiving me for what I’ve done. The best thing for me, and for the team, is to step away for a period of time.
“During this time I’m going to be speaking with a variety of professionals to help me better understand how I could have done something that was so offensive, and how I can start the healing process for everyone. As long as it takes, and whatever I have to do, I’m going to try to make this right.”
Allowing him to step away from the team also gives the Eagles a chance to sort out the best course of long-term action, while teammates decide amongst themselves whether he can be forgiven.

agreed. i also am not pleased with the things he said (i'm not black, but i'd be considered a minority who's dealt with racism in the past and can relate), but at the same time, the guy handled it properly by not sweeping it under the rug and manning up to his team and apologizing.
