Steelers Le'Veon Bell says he's aiming to play by Week 2 vs. Bengals

By Michael Uhlhorn on Sep 2 2013, 8:00p

Steelers rookie running back Le'Veon Bell has been sidelined with a mid-foot sprain for the last two weeks. Monday, he says he is looking to make his debut with the Steelers in Week 2 when the Steelers travel to Cincinnati.

Isaac Redman fans might want to enjoy week 1, as Le'Veon Bell plans to take the reigns in week 2.

Bell is ruling himself out here for week 1, which is news in itself. I think many of us fans and the Steeler coaching staff feared a longer stay on the bench than 1 regular season game when Bell went down with a mid-foot injury against the Redskins.

The Steelers are coming in with three new running backs from the sub-par 2012 unit, and Felix Jones and Larod Stephens-Howling will help Redman until Bell gets his feet back under him to (hopefully) claim the starting spot against the Bengals.

Redman, for his part, has indicated that he wants to keep the coaches from "wanting to put in anyone else." I think I can speak for most of Steeler Nation when I say that I welcome any effort by Redman in 2013 that keeps Bell from becoming the starter. Redman will have to have one heck of a year to keep Bell on the bench, so go for it Isaac!

One aspect that has yet to be seen is whether the coaches and trainers agree with Bell's week 2 timeline. The last thing that Tomlin & Co. could want is for Bell to rush back and injure himself worse. I suspect that if Bell is back by week 2, he is at 100%. Us fans shouldn't expect to see him before he is.

I am looking forward to seeing a 100% Redman to start the year.

I was really disappointed last season that he was finally given a chance but started the season off with a pulled groin. He was not really himself til at least midseason last year when Mendy imploded.

I don't know if Redman has the speed to match this ZBL scheme, but he has the best vision and footwork of any of our backs for sure. He has really soft hands in the passing game too.

I do think each RB on our roster brings something different to the table. The RB by committee thing can work-- I think it did not work last year because they had crap blocking for them.

This is going to be an interesting year, I think. I have no doubts the defense will hold up their end of the bargain-- just hope this Oline looks more like the KC first half and not the one from the other 14 quarters of football we saw this preseason.

That, and if our special teams do not shit the bed, heck, this team can actually contend this year I think. They will be totally under the radar and might struggle at first. But as the year wears on, we get Miller back, we get Le'veon back, and things can start to click.

Week 2 sounds good to me

we can end that "RB by committee" bullshit and get a real #1

Only if 100%. No rushing him back this time. If he's good to go , fine. If not we can wait a little longer.

I agree wholeheartedly. Please, do NOT rush him back; allow him to completely heal.

Obviously , the release of dwyer , alludes to what another member posted . The Steelers offense wants all purpose backs who can catch , run , and block. Dwyer was prob the least effective in all 3 facets. Bell , is the best all around , with Red right behind him. I believe big plans are in store when heath and bell are back.

If he is ready to play by week 2 than he should wait until week 3. One extra week of healing could make a world of difference.

He'd better not get hurt. If he does, it will undoubtedly be by James Harrison.

I'll /quit.

Okay, so Bell can run, but can he hold onto the ball? Do you remember that game last year when everybody fumbled. It was so bad I even dropped my beer and benched myself.
