Random Slash thoughts

No, not that Slash (although I did have November Rain stuck in my head today).

Our old best buddy, Kordell Stewart.

Recent talk about how he might have been the best QB in another franchise's history got me thinking randomly on his 'legacy'.

Mostly I was thinking that he's a bit of an anomaly in NFL history. Very few athletes like him have come along and succeeded on any level... and yet few have struggled so mightily at their assigned position. In that regard he's like a successful Tim Tebow or failed George Blanda.

In any event, a few questions/thoughts:

1. Do you think that Slash could have succeeded at another position?

2. Do you think Slash could succeed in today's NFL (to include the last five years)?

Per #1: Again, Slash was a bit of a physical anomaly. At 6-1/218, he's a bit of a tweener; he fits the mold for multiple positions, but none quite fully. He was too inaccurate (or arguably lacked the intelligence) to be a QB. He was too 'small' to be a RB. He didn't have the hands to be a WR or the size to be a TE. He probably didn't have the natural instincts to be a successful DB. So where does that leave him as an NFL player [in comparison to his natural talents and what he ended up doing with them]? The closest comparison I can think of in terms of career longevity based on where he came from is a fellow Steeler---Antwaan Randle El. Antwaan was a standout QB at a non-dominant college, then converted to become a competent #3 WR in the NFL for nearly a decade. Could Slash have replicated that given the opportunity [elsewhere]? I'm really not confident that he could have. Ability says he could, my memory of him casts doubts.

Per #2: I think so. If in-his-prime Slash was transported to 2007 and put on a different team---or merely on a Steelers team that bought into a read option or Wildcat offense---he could have thrived as a QB. If nothing else he would have had fewer chances to fail. As things were he threw for double-digits TDs thrice and 3000 yds twice in more 'conventional' offenses. He tacked on 400 or more rushing yards in four of the six years he started (with 35 TDs) under center... doesn't that sound exactly like the type of QB who would be putting up crazy Madden-like numbers in today's flag football league? I'm not sure how that would have translated in terms of team success, but if nothing else it feels like Slash could have been a media darling if he was born 10 years later---a marketable Nike/Madden cover athlete whose flash translated to dollars.

Overall, I think Kordell Stewart is one of those 'wrong time' athletes; possibly even 'wrong sport'. You don't succeed in the NFL by luck or accident. The dude had freakish talent, he just couldn't harness it at the right position enough to carve out a better legacy or translate it into a niche like say... Devin Hester or Fridge Perry.

In this regard he almost feels like Reggie Bush, one of those 'what if?' or 'why wasn't he more successful?' guys.

What do you think?

good questions. We'll never really know, but I think he could have developed into a really good WR. You bring up a great point about him playing in todays game. I think he would have thrived.

Since this thread is about random thoughts here are a few of mine:

1. I am glad he is not our quarterback now.

2. I think he was fast (4.3 40) and athletic enough to be a very good receiver.

3. What was that thing on his face?

He was a pretty good qb and improving, until the Steelers in their wisdom decided to try and turn him into a pocket passer. He wasn't cut out for that role but the brass tried anyway and ruined him.

Its gonna be hard to find a ? and an !.

I think Kordella could have developed into a pretty decent wide out. Using him like we occasionally did with El would have been the best for his career. If I remember correctly Kordella insisted on playing QB and acted as if he would become a problem if he didn't get his way.

Was the read option even a glimmer in anyone's eye then? He might have been able to do a little better in that sort of offense.

Ray Sherman ruined him.
