New to Hockey

So I'm new to Hockey. I've always enjoyed watching it, been to a couple of Des Moines Buccaneers games way back when but I honestly kind of forgot about it until recently I started watching some highlights and came to the realization that I am missing out on so much awesome. I've always liked watching Sidney Crosby play so naturally I'm going to call myself a Pens fan now.

Curious if anyone would be interested in helping me gain a firmer understanding of the game. If someone has something that could explain to me the rules and regs that would be greatly appreciated. I'm planning on adding the sports package to my Directv so I can watch the Pens game tomorrow against the Carolina Hurricanes. Actually watching full on games is probably the best way to learn is what I'm guessing.

A buddy of mine is a die hard Flyers fan (big rivalry, that much I know) so he's been actually helping me out a little bit. Tried to convince me to be a Flyers fan, but I just felt like the Pens are my team so I solidified my fanship by asking for a Crosby jersey for Christmas (which I did receive). Let's just say my friend was none too impressed, but I'm sure he'll get over it. One thing I've noticed so far is just how many fans seem to despise Sidney Crosby. From what I've gathered seems like a lot of jealous BS. Accusing him of taking dives, and calling him a crybaby. Somehow I doubt the Crosby haters would be hating him so much if he played for their team.

Well I will say I am looking forward to catching this next game and really digging my teeth into hockey. Here's a pic of me in my new Crosby jersey that I posted on my facebook, accompanied by my friend's response.

Hell yeah! Go Pens!

I'm excited to start watching. I've got a lot to learn yet but I think some hands on time watching games is going to be the best learning tool.

Welcome to the dark side!! :chuckle:

Some hands on time will definitely help the most in learning the rules. NHL.com has a great set up for learning the basic rules though. And I had posted here about some of the new rules that have been implemented this year (the one that affects the game the most is the hybrid icing). http://forums.steelersfever.com/showthread.php?t=100836

Here is the rulebook, if you get confused on anything and need to look it up:

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/pdf...ook-update.pdf

They also have a video rulebook set up on there, which will probably be more useful to you to get an idea of the basic rules (anything obscure is usually explained by the announcers).

http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=68553

And even further, they have a Learning Center, which is geared more towards players and coaches...but if you want to learn more about the X's and O's of the game, it's a good start. Some of it can only be viewed by purchasing the premium content, but it looks like there's plenty of good info available for free.

http://www.flexxcoach.com/learningcenter/

HFBoards is a great place to go as well (though I don't frequent it as much as I used to). They not only have separate forum sections for each NHL team, but for most leagues...major, minor and international. They also have some good sections on the history of hockey (classic games and discussions) and analytics, draft stuff, trades and whatnot....for if you get more into the game itself.

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/

As to the rivalry with the Flyers, they actually did a series this year called NHL Rivals, and each episode features the history and/or current rivalry of two teams. They have been showcasing Wednesday Night Rivalries on NBCSN, and these episodes accompany those games. The Pens have been in 3 episodes so far (Flyers, Rangers, Capitols), but the only one on YouTube is the (thankfully) the Flyers one. It's good stuff. I was a fan of the Pens before the "Battle of Pennsylvania" really got going. It didn't really start until the late 80's when the Pens started to become successful. It has become one of the best rivalries in hockey, and in sports.

Also, if you want some behind the scenes look into the Pens, they do episodes called "Inside the Room" about once a month during the season (they are in the third season of doing this). They are all available on the Pens NHL site. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=93332 (that link is for previous seasons, but they have the current one up as well, just go to current episode and scroll down if you are interested). There's a lot of good info on their site as well about the history of the team and current goings on if you are interested.

I hope you enjoy the game as much as I have over the years, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Oh, and SCREW Hartnell. That should be one of the first things you learn as a Pens fan. He's an soulless little ginger with Ronald McDonald hair, and he bites people in scrums.

I will admit that there was reason in the past to call Sid a whiner. When he was first in the league (at 18), he did some over complaining to the refs...no true Pens fan will deny that. (they actually touch on it in the rivalry episode) But he grew up quick. Most of it now is jealous BS. And he FEEDS off of it. I absolutely adore it when they chant "Crosby sucks" in Philthy, and then he scores. It's insanely satisfying.

And yes, not a single person would complain if he was on their team. He is a once in a lifetime player.

Here's some random awesome videos for when you have time (some of them are long).

(2013 just means when the person made the video, it's an overall compilation though)

Re: New to Hockey

You are correct the best way to learn the game is to watch it. I would first read about it. i.e. the basic rules, penalties, etc. Wikipedia is pretty good with those topics.

Good ways to learn about teams is to follow them via their websites. Read the news, updates, familiarize yourself with their roster & players. I would even also suggest scanning through the team's history.

I hope this supplements what SC Mom provided above - great job there!

Well, you came to the right place. @SteelCityMom knows her stuff in the Pens forum which is pretty active on game days. Plus I'm Canadian which means, ya know, hockey and stuff.

I think a good idea would be to hop into that thread tomorrow during the game and talk about what you're seeing live and ask any questions. I know I'll be in there watching it to help you out as best I can.

It's honestly right up there with football in entertainment value.

I tried explaining hockey to my wife, what a train wreck. I told her get a pair of skates and hit the local rink, maybe some hits will drive it in her lol.
