Worilds ranked second-best free-agent LB

By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Linebacker Jason Worilds, blocked by a wrist injury and two Pro Bowlers in front of him his first three seasons with the Steelers, broke through with his best season in 2013, and it’s about to pay off for him.

Worilds is ranked as the second-best linebacker available in free agency, according to RotoWorld, a highly regarded site that covers pro sports, including the NFL, and released its ratings Friday.

The only outside linebacker ranked ahead of Worilds is Brian Orakpo of the Washington Redskins, a first-round draft choice in 2009 who has made three Pro Bowls.

Free agents can sign with other teams beginning March 11, but they can re-sign with their own team anytime before. Although the Steelers have not identified which players they would like to sign, president Art Rooney II, in a recent chat with Steelers ticket-holders, mentioned only one player when asked who he would like to keep.

“Jason Worilds is certainly somebody who came on and showed what he can do, particularly over the second half of the season,” Rooney said.

The Steelers have 21 unrestricted free agents, and 18 landed on RotoWorld’s rankings. Among their position players, Fernando Velasco ranked the next highest as the eighth-best center.

Emmanuel Sanders is ranked No. 9 at wide receiver, Jerricho Cotchery No. 17 and Plaxico Burress No. 44 among the 45 they ranked.

Ryan Clark is listed 10th among the 40 safeties with Will Allen at No. 34. Former Steelers safety Ryan Mundy is No. 23.

RotoWorld ranked LaRod Stephens-Howling as the 14th-best running back, Jonathan Dwyer as No. 15 and Felix Jones No. 20. Former Steeler Rashard Mendenhall ranked seventh.

Brett Keisel is 15th among the 35 defensive ends. It listed defensive end Ziggy Hood at defensive tackle, where they rank him 16th among the 40 on their list with Al Woods at No. 30.

David Johnson is listed at No. 20 among tight ends and Michael Palmer No. 25.

Stevenson Sylvester ranks 29th of the 30 inside linebackers on the RotoWorld list, but Jamaal Westerman is ranked five spots above him.

Of the five punters listed, Plum native Pat McAfee is No. 1, and two who played for the Steelers last season, Mat McBriar and Zoltan Mesko, are listed fourth and fifth.

Former Steelers offensive lineman Willie Colon is rated No. 3 among guards available in free agency. Also at guard, former Steeler Jamon Meredith is ranked 14th and Chris Scott No. 22.

Only three of the Steelers impending 21 unrestricted free agents are not on the RotoWorld rankings — Cody Wallace and Guy Whimper, and they do not list long snappers, so Greg Warren is not mentioned.

The Steelers have no restricted free agents this year.

the only thing the steelers can do is throw who they want to keep an offer and hope it sticks...without overpaying!!!

I hope a team pays a huge contract for him, and the Steelers get a R3 comp pick for him in the 2015 draft.

Orakpo is head and shoulders better than Worilds is. It's really not even close.

I think that Worilds is valuable to the Steelers, not sure how much value he will have elsewhere. He fits our system but only on one side apparently. I hope we keep him but don't break the bank.

Pittsburgh Steelers Rumors: Jason Worilds Drawing Interest From A Dozen Teams

BY MATT SHETLER - FEB 24TH, 2014

Many feel that the Pittsburgh Steelers top priority this offseason is re-signing outside linebacker Jason Worilds.

Many also feel that will be as easy as cutting ties with fellow outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley. However as I have noted in the past, it won’t be that simple for the Steelers to get a deal done with Worilds.

Now, as expected, they have a ton of competition for the services of the fourth-year pro.

According to Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net, “at least a dozen” NFL teams have already expressed a lot of interest in Worilds.

Pauline also adds that Woodley’s deal will make it “very difficult if not impossible” to keep Worilds.

The Steelers have Woodley under contract for $8 million next season to go along with a cap hit of $13.59 million. Releasing him this offseason would free up $25.5 million in cap space over the next three years. However it’s the dead money this year that will eventually hurt the Steelers whether or not Woodley is on the roster or not.

Worilds is coming off of a solid year in 2013 and has said that he has no intention of taking a back seat in the coming years, so the Steelers would not only need to pay him a market value contract, but also assure him that he will be a starter moving forward.

The Virginia Tech product had 63 tackles, eight sacks and two forced fumbles this season and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 12 3-4 outside linebacker in the league.

With so much competition for Worilds’ services, you know for a certainty that the price will be driven up. If that is the case, it could be impossible for the Steelers to pay Worilds what he is going to get from other teams.

The Steelers are projected to be around $10 million above the salary cap going into the offseason. While there are ways they can free up money, will they be able to free up enough to ink Worilds to a deal and still fill some other needs?

Its simple, If he wants too much let him walk. If he can be signed for a reasonable price then do that and cut Woodley. Then allow Porter to groom Jarvis.

Orakpo is an injury concern. A good buddy of mine is a diehard Skins fan and pretty much says he wants Orakpo out; claiming he's a "situational pass rusher at best" and that he's "very poor against the run." He thinks Kerrigan is much better.

That being said I hope Worilds stays but for the right price. I was never a big fan of Worilds but something clicked this season. He looked like Harrison out there in the last half of the season. Woodley is done.
