HOF Quarterback Jim Kelly’s Cancer Returns, Aggressively Spreading
March 25, 2014

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh native and Hall of Fame Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly’s cancer has reportedly returned, and is aggressively spreading.

Earlier this month Kelly was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in eight months.

His wife Jill Kelly wrote on a personal blog last week that, “the cancer is back, aggressive, and starting to spread.”

On her Instagram page, Jill also said that her husband is tentatively scheduled for surgery on Thursday.

Over the weekend, Kelly’s daughter Erin, posted a photo to her Instagram account showing her in a hospital bed with her dad watching a Syracuse basketball game.

Kelly, a former player at East Brady High School passed for 3,915 yards and 44 touchdowns during his high school career, which gave him all-state honors.

He played for the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1996 where he was a five-time Pro Bowler and made First-Team All-Pro in 1991.

The Bills’ all-time leader in passing touchdowns and completions would also make it to the Super Bowl four consecutive times, but did not win a title.

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers, Jim. May God hold you in His healing hands.

More surgery is cancelled for Jim Kelly

Jill Kelly, the wife of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, wrote earlier this week that her husband would undergo surgery on Thursday because the cancer he fought off last year was "back, aggressive and starting to spread."

On Wednesday, though, she wrote that the surgery has been canceled because "the cancer is in areas that surgery cannot successfully eradicate."

"Because of complexity and aggressive nature of this cancer and after more scans and tests, the plan has changed," Jill Kelly wrote on her Facebook page. "At this point, Jim will not be having surgery ... Therefore, the medical specialists here in NYC along with our Buffalo team believe that chemotherapy and radiation are the best option."

Sad news - sounds like Jim Kelly and his family are having the "treatable but not curable" conversation with the oncologist

Sad to hear a great like Jim Kelly is in this condition. Too bad he never achieved a Super Bowl ring. He certainly deserved it for as unstoppable as those Bills teams were back then.

My thoughts go out to him, his family, and his friends.

sucks man, scary to think this guy was in his prime when i was in high school, which doesn't seem very long ago

i hated this guy since he always seemed to do well against the steelers, but i could respect him. a great athlete and a class act, which is more than i can say about tom brady

He has lived a great football life, and was a great player.

By all accounts, he's a greater man and father, and deserves much better than he and his family are getting.

Some people have no luck. He lost a son to a horrific disease and now is apparently in a losing battle against cancer.

Very, very sad. Best wishes to Jim Kelly and his family.

Peter King leads his MMQB column with a Jim Kelly update

Kelly begins a regimen of treatment—chemotherapy Monday and Tuesday, radiation Wednesday, Thursday and Friday—designed to stop the cancer that is dangerously close to the carotid artery in his head. It’s too perilous to operate now, even if the cancer that has spread up his infraorbital nerve can be neutralized, because there’s no guarantee all of it can be found and removed. If doctors operated and all the cancer wasn’t eradicated, weeks could go by before chemo or radiation could begin while he recovers from surgery, and that crucial time could allow the cancer to spread into his brain unabated. So for now, it’s several weeks of aggressive chemo and radiation. Kelly’s New York oncologist, Dr. Peter Costantino, called Kelly’s condition “very treatable and potentially curable” last week.
