Just say no, Bills

Trump emerges as potential investor for Bills

Posted by Mike Florio on April 1, 2014, 1:02 PM EDT

The man who once helped sue the NFL could be joining the ranks of the league’s owners.

Or maybe he just wants a little publicity, and he’s a week too late for the whole “hogs get slaughtered” routine.

Regardless, billionaire Donald Trump told WBEN radio in Buffalo that he has been approached about buying the Bills.

“People have actually talked to me about the Bills,” Trump said, via ESPN.com. “I mean, the group of people called me — would I be interested in investing and I’ll take a look at it. I mean, I look at a lot of things. I’ll take a look at it.”

It’s unclear whether Trump would be the lead dog or merely a minority owner. In the 1980s, Trump owned the USFL’s New Jersey Generals. At Trump’s urging, the upstart league (which pilfered more than a few big-name players) moved from the spring to the fall, taking on the NFL directly — and quickly failing. An antitrust lawsuit against the NFL resulted in a $1 verdict, which by law was trebled to $3.

But decades have passed since that unfortunate legal entanglement, and nothing rebuilds bridges like cold hard cash. It also will help Trump’s cause if the group in which he could be involved commits to keeping the team in Buffalo. Trump seems to be willing to make that commitment.

“I know so many people in Buffalo and they have asked me about look at that and I certainly would look at it but I would … if it were me I’d keep the team in Buffalo,” Trump said. “I think it’s something that is really vital to the area. … It would be catastrophic, in my opinion, if Buffalo lost the Buffalo Bills.”

Either way, the ultimate reality show could soon be joining forces with a man whose reality show spawned the catch phrase that plenty of Bills coaches have heard in recent years.

Trump presumably is as serious about buying the Bills as he was about running for President

Whomever buys has these numbers to take into account

The Bills' future in Orchard Park is secure for the short term. The team negotiated a 10-year lease in December 2012 with the state and county to continue playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

It's a $271 million deal, of which $130 million will be committed to upgrading an aging stadium that opened in 1973.

The agreement includes a provision that essentially locks in the Bills through the first seven seasons. The franchise would have to pay $400 million if it decides to leave before 2019. The team then has an option of buying out the remaining three years of the lease for $28 million.

Peter King thinks whomever buys eventually moves the team

That gives a new owner a good chance to put a group together to either buy and keep the team in Buffalo (probably a long shot as the 51st-largest market in the country) or move it.

Trump isn't as rich as he like to make himself out to be. No way he can afford an NFL team or even be a majority investor.

Well, I'd make my name BeaversCanada but that's sort of redundant.

3.9 billion with a healthy cash flow. I think he can.

Trump himself admits that he uses the value of his "brand" (e.g. selling his name to developers) to get his figure. Unless he's had some explosion in value in the past couple years, I don't think he's worth more than a few hundred million (he's not a billionaire).
