Notebook: Porter sounds unimpressed with Rivers
By The Tribune-Review
Friday, October 6, 2006 Linebacker Joey Porter said the Steelers already know what San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers is going to do. "They're not letting him do too much," Porter said. "They're not going to ask him to throw 30 times. They're going to tell him to manage the football game." Porter doesn't sound too impressed with Rivers. "We definitely have the scheme to rattle any quarterback," Porter said. "We'll see how he handles it." ? Reserve running back Najeh Davenport is inching closer to the playing field. Davenport, who hurt his lower leg Monday in practice and is listed as questionable, worked out with the team yesterday and showed enough to get coach Bill Cowher's attention. "Najeh worked today. He felt pretty good," Cowher said. "We'll see how he feels, and we'll go from there." Davenport has dressed the last two games but has yet to play. Another running back slowed because of injuries, Duce Staley, could also play against San Diego, although Cowher isn't making any guarantees. ? Santonio Holmes was the only rookie receiver taken in the first round of the 2006 draft. So far, Holmes, who starred at Ohio State, hasn't been much of a factor: five catches for 51 yards. "Sitting back watching, it's kind of tough. But you play in certain situations for a reason," Holmes said. "I feel it was time for me to grow and learn a lot more over the year, than to be out there making all those mistakes early." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digits 9 - Tackles Troy Polamalu had against the Chargers last year. 62 - Rushing yards LaDainian Tomlinson had against the Steelers last year. |
Re: Notebook: Porter sounds unimpressed with Rivers
he should be unimpressed, how hard is it to turn and hand it off to the best running back in the game. not to tough. al roker could do that. i would put 8 or 9 in the box. have ike taylor lock down kennan mcardell, double gates. make phillip rivers beat me by passing the ball. i dont think he can or will, besides marty shotenheimer won't let that happen. we have a good chance to win this week. and i think we may dominate this game.

Re: Notebook: Porter sounds unimpressed with Rivers
i believe peezy is right to assume that rivers wont have a major game on sunday but he shouldnt underestimate him. rivers is a good QB but we beat the chargers last year when they had drew brees, so i dont see them winning when their team actually got worse.
PROPOSED CHARGERS STATS: RIVERS-18/28 175YDS 1TD 1INT L.T.-17 CAR. 55YDS 0TDS, 3 REC. 8YDS MIKE TURNER-8 CAR. 36YDS 0TDS, 1 REC. 12YDS GATES-5 CATCHES 105YDS sorry for using caps guys |
Re: Notebook: Porter sounds unimpressed with Rivers
I wonder if Peezy realizes this is who Cowher really wanted when he drafted Ben. I think Rivers would be even better in our system then Ben has been.

For Rivers 06 read Roethlisberger 04 and 05.
Funny how he should mention Rivers being a 'game manager' when his own QB had less atts per game in his first and second season. Rivers Atts/game = 22.7 Ben 04 Atts/Game = 21.07 Ben 05 Atts/Game = 22.3 NM |

Yeah too bad we could not have drafted Rivers. Ben has been a tremendous disappoinment - with Rivers at QB the Steelers would have done much better the last 2 years |
