Re: Running Backs

Sounds like Parker is officially the starter!!! :cheer:

Cowher insisted Parker will remain the starter when Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley return from injuries. ``Willie Parker is going nowhere,'' Cowher said. ...

Steelers Notebook: Cowher says Parker will start next week

Monday, September 19, 2005
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

HOUSTON -- To paraphrase an old Steelers quarterback: Willie Parker's the man. Write it down.

Parker has nailed down the job as the Steelers' starting halfback, no matter how healthy Jerome Bettis and/or Duce Staley get.

"Willie's starting again next week," coach Bill Cowher said after Parker rattled off his third consecutive 100-yard game rushing. "He's our starter."

Parker, making his second NFL start, rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. He has 272 yards on 47 carries and two touchdowns in two games. Plus, defenses seem so unnerved by him that the Steelers' play-action passing game has never looked better. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed three long passes, including one for 54 yards to Antwaan Randle El yesterday.

Parker took the official word of his promotion in the kind of stride he has shown on the field.

"It's a surprise," the undrafted second-year player said. "I try to stay away from who's a starter and who's not a starter. Jerome, Duce and those guys have been great.

"I'm still not [convinced], I don't care what coach Cowher or anybody thinks. I'm just really trying to help the team out anyway I can."

Staley (knee) and Bettis (calf) did not dress again yesterday, but Staley believes he will be ready to play Sunday against New England at Heinz Field.

"I knew pretty much he was going to put me down, but I was close all week," said Staley.

here's the rest

Glad to hear this. Willie Parker is doing great right now. He has proven himself. If he starts not being able to carry the load thats the only way I would take the starter position away from him.

I would not be suprised if he gets limited carries later in the year to save him for the playoffs. He is a smaller back and takes some good shots running that fast... I think you have to take advatage of the fact you got the Bus and Duce to carry some of the load. Especially if it looks like we are cruising to a playoff spot.

Then you give him 25+ carries in December....

Cowher has a big dilemma on his hands, but a good problem to have.. 3 successful RB's in his stable and how to get them all playing time.

Jerome is pretty simple.. Give him all the short yardage and goal lines runs or atleast alot of them, and let staley spell Willie.. Sounds easy enough but getting duce and willie enough carries to keep them in a rythmn and in the game is a bit harder than it sounds.

I really don't see this as a problem...

two veteran RB's getting so much deserved rest playing the best cheerleaders you could have.

one excited RB going behind a great o-line and then walking back and have two established RB's say great job.

None of the other backs would ever say anything as long as Parker is producing the way he is.

Re: Cowher: Parker is the starter..not going anywhere

It's great that Coach has finally passed the job to Willie, I'm sure he will continue to do a great job. It also says a lot about the coaching the team do to elevate Willie to this position, we all thought that getting Duce here was the final piece in our jigsaw, despite his injuries it has not affected the team too much.

Like Blitz says, it will be difficult later in the season to keep 3 RBs happy and enough work to keep in a rythmn, but with the Bus for goaline plays and Duce to spell Willie we are looking good.

Of course, all of this does make Ben look good and more importantly increase his confidence in himself, no bad thing, the Steelers are on the way.

Bring on the pats and lets us give it to them!! Our first tough test

Some time this year they should put them in the wishbone with JB, Staley and Parker just for one series. Just for fun...
