Just another reason why....

I choose not to swim in any of the three rivers. Something you don't see everyday in Pittsburgh......

Couple Finds Python Carcass Near Mon River

(KDKA) GLASSPORT A local couple, out for a walk, came upon the carcass of a large reticulated python that washed ashore along the banks of the Monongahela River today.

Now, many questions remain about just how the snake ended up in the waters of the Mon River. Officials say they believe the reptile was at one point someone’s pet.

“I was looking for driftwood, and Jessie said she found a snake. I thought to myself, 'I'll go catch it, and show it to the boys,'” said Jason Harmon, of Glassport. “I came down, and looked at it, and I said, ‘I don't think that's the kind of snake I was thinking about.’”

Officials measured the snake at 14 feet long.

“I didn't realize how big it was until I actually went back down, and looked,” says Jessica Harmon.

Reticulated pythons have been known to grow up to 33 feet in length, and, their native habitat is in Southeast Asia.

Wildlife pest control officer Dave Collura removed the dead animal.

“It's probably a household pet that got loose. In Florida, they have a major problem with these living wild the year round, but around here, the winters are cold, we shouldn't have a problem with them in the wild,” says Collura. “It's a pet that got lose, and passed on. From the looks of the wound, I would say he was in the river, and got hit by a motorboat.”

Would have to be an escaped pet. Don't think it would survive the winter time.

Here where I live there's a gator farm (Idaho):hunch:, but its on a hot springs, so if they have any escapees they wont last much past summer time. It does make you look twice tho when your out on the Snake River in the summer. People have also caught Piranha's out here too. :jawdrop:

i swam in the allegheny when i was about 11. got in some big trouble. my great grandfather who was a great swimmer drowned doing laps across (this was back in the 30's).

ive heard stories when the rivers used to be junk. my dad told me about swimming in them as a kid and youd see turds floating by (back when they were part of the sewer).

my gramma used to jump off a hill by the tracks alongside the river onto slow moving trains and then into the water.

my uncle jumped off 1 of the bridges into the water when he was younger.

kids are pretty dumb. except for the drowning and the turds it sounds pretty fun, now that its cleaned up.

i was told how there used to be so much logs and trees and debris floating down the river you really could become trapped and sucked under at any time. any idea how deep the rivers actually are? one of the coolest pictures ive seen is 2 of my cousins standing in the middle of the frozen river with the city as the backdrop. i dont think i would do that.

Yeah, like you said, it's not as bad as it used to be. From what I've heard it has cleaned up pretty nice. I still won't swim in it though...lol.

I'm not exactly sure of the depth.

Maybe they all are property of Chad Brown and he didn't want to take him with him back to New England so he just dumped them in the rivers.

For those who don't remember, Chad Brown is a collector of exotic reptiles!
