SAFETY SECOND: CB Deshea Townsend worked at safety Wednesday afternoon, taking reps to prepare as an emergency fill-in at the position with FS Anthony Smith (abdominal) not practicing. That opened up work for CB Bryan McFadden with the first-team defense. At present, Townsend is not in danger of losing his starting position opposite CB Ike Taylor.
PASSING ON BEN: QB Ben Roethlisberger enjoyed a scheduled off day from throwing. Coach Mike Tomlin said QB Charlie Batch likely would be given today off. Roethlisberger took a few snaps on running plays during 11-on-11 work.
ONE-FOR-TWO: FS Ryan Clark intercepted a Batch pass that was first tipped by TE Jerame Tuman, who had slipped to the turf prior to the ball's arrival. Clark had a chance for a second interception when QB Bryan Randall threw a pass to no one in the flat, but Clark couldn't maintain possession.
BACK IN THE MIX: LB Lawrence Timmons got some work in 11-on-11 play, his first since returning from a groin injury that kept him sidelined for the vast majority of camp.
STILL AT IT: Tuman worked on long-snapping for the second consecutive day following the afternoon practice.
THE BIG PLAY: Batch completed a long TD pass to WR Hines Ward in a skeleton passing drill.
NOT HAPPY: The performance of the wide receivers during a one-on-one drill against the defensive backs prompted Tomlin to wonder aloud, "How many balls you gonna drop today, white shirts?" The offense wears white in practice and the defense gold.
TAKE THAT: LB Richard Koonce drew cheers from the hillside when he knocked over a blocking sled during individual work.
YOUR TURN: QB Brian St. Pierre and Randall each got a chance to spend a little time running the no-huddle offense.
CATCH OF THE DAY: WR Nate Washington extended to make an impressive grab along the sideline on a pass from Batch.
GETTING SOME KICKS: The Steelers worked on place-kicking protection and blocking place kicks for the third consecutive day, although they didn't go live for the second consecutive afternoon. No place kicks were blocked during the completion of this drill.
